My great Aunt ended up there because her mother decided she was "rebellous". She was later"cured", married and lived, I guess, a normal life.

I think we all had an aunt who spent time there. I had one, too. I've always wondered if a woman who , perhaps, had a mind of her own, was put into Agnews, to teach her a lesson. Don't know what the lesson may have been, though...... When we were kids, 1949 or so, Mom had a friend who we knew as Mrs Lacas. Mrs Lacas(Not sure about spelling) read tea leaves and read the cards , told fortunes, for Mom and her friends. Mom had her at the house with a couple of Moms friends for a session and chased us kids outside for the event. ( The doorknob was missing, a hole in the door, and we caught a garter snake and stuck it through the door for a prank.) Mrs Lacas said she didn't flush when she peed because she could not see the sense of wasting 5 gallons of water for a few drops of Peepee. . A women ahead of her time! Anyway, she was a widow and lived alone in a little house in town and was a bit odd. I suppose she was a spiritualist of sorts. Her neighbor complained about her and somehow managed to get her committed to Agnew. Mom went there to see her a few times before she died. A harmless old lady who wouldn't hurt a fly. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Raymond" <perfectlefty59@comcast.net> To: <norcal@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2010 4:05 PM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Agnews History Museum > My great Aunt ended up there because her mother decided she was > "rebellous". > > She was later"cured", married and lived, I guess, a normal life. > > > ----------------------------------------- > NORCAL ARCHIVES: > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ > Enter NORCAL. ________________________________ My sister was a special education teacher in San Jose. She taught the older teens. In the 1980s she had a student that lived at Agnew. I am not sure I understand what Agnew was. This girl was not insane, she was simple. At that time did Agnew house some of the indigent who were not mentally capable of caring for themselves?
