The remains of deceased were interred in the Alcalde cemetery on May 24th.] ------------------------------------------------------- SUIT OVER WATER -- The trial of the case of E.R. SANBORN et al. vs. Mrs. Frutilla EATON (widow of Matt EATON) et al., began in the Superior Court of Kings County before Judge Jacobs this forenoon. It is an important case, judging from the legal talent engaged and the number of witnesses employed. BRADLY & FARNSWORTH and E.O. LARKINS are attorneys for the defense, while DAGGETT & ADAMS are attorneys for plaintiffs. All the attorneys are from Visalia. Mrs. EATON and SANBORN are both riparian owners of water rights in Mill Creek. Mrs. EATON's land is partly in Tulare Co. and SANBORN's all in Kings Co. Suit is brought to restrain defendant, Mrs. SANBORN, from diverting water from the creek onto her land. ------------------------------------------------------ LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -The children at Thomas JENKINSON's, near Armona, have all been ill recently with measles. -A.M. LACQUE has returned from a 6 weeks' trip to Sonoma County. He returns better satisfied than ever to remain in the Baby County. -Mrs. DILLON, wife of Supervisor DILLON, was dangerously ill last week from heart disease, but is now recovering from the attack. -Fannie and Bae PHILLIPS, school teachers from Woodland and sisters of Rev. W.E. PHILLIPS, are visiting him during vacation. They will go from here to Los Angeles to visit another brother. LAST THURSDAY there were only 5 patients in the county hospital, 1 having gone away the day previous. One of the patients is nearly a centenarian -- Elijah CYPHES, aged 96. The old gentleman is quite cheerful and lively, but does not walk around much. He is apparently good for his 100th year. F.W. CANTERBURY, of Lemoore, met with a peculiar accident last Friday. He had gone over beyond Kings River some 6 miles to look at a new well cap recently invented. It was made of iron and was heavier than he thought and it fell into one of his hands, below which was a broken bottle. His had was badly cut and an artery was severed. He bled terribly and came near fainting away from loss of blood. He hastened to Lemoore for medical assistance. Several pieces of glass were removed from his hand. At last accounts he was doing well but had been threatened with lockjaw. THE PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION of H.A. PIERCE, on a charge of stealing a steer belonging to David BURRIS, was held before Justice Randall last Friday. Several witnesses for the prosecution told of defendant having the steer in his possession and driving it away to Fresno county. Josh BURRIS, a son of the prosecuting witness, D. BURRIS, was the only witness introduced for the defense, and he testified that defendant and defendant's wife had both notified him that the steer was at their place and asked him to take it away. Justice Randall dismissed the case against PIERCE, stating at the same time that he believed PIERCE drove the steer away with the intent to keep the same and thus commit larceny, but that it was probable a jury would not convict defendant on the evidence elicited and he did not wish the county to incur unnecessary expense. B.F. FLEENOR closed his writing school at Lakeside last Saturday. He will, he informs us, soon go to Oregon to assist Bishop DILLON of the United Brethren Church in tent meetings. His 6-year-old daughter, who is now here, will accompany him. ------------------------------------------------------ GRANGEVILLE -- -Mr. Louie KOHN, of S.F., a brother of Mrs. NATHAN, is here for a few days on business. -Kentucky contributed 2 more of her good Democratic sons to Kings County on Wednesday, in the persons of John and William HUMPHREYS. They have already gone to work and so far are very well pleased with the country. -Jess LANE has improved very much lately in photography. The picture he took of Mrs. M.A. HORLOCK's house and front yard is very good, and for clearness of shading and finish is not often equaled by regular artists. -Mr. I. RICHIE arrived safely at Juneau, Alaska, but too late to cross the mountains to Cook's Inlet, as the snow has commenced to thaw, so he will have to go round by steamer, which does not sail for 6 weeks. He writes that board is cheap (about 35 cents a day) and as the weather is fine, he expects to be able to get work in the quartz mill until he leaves. Will AGEE and the others, who preceded him from here, have arrived safely as far as Cook's Inlet. Transcribed by Dee Sardoch To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/
