    2. my grandmother was also born in 1876 in San Francisco. she applied for a delayed birth certificate, using the census and another record, SSDI, I believe, to prove her age so she could get the document. other than her interest in genealogy, I have no idea why she wanted the delayed birth certificate, as she only traveled lightly, going to Virginia during WWII to be with her husband while he was in officer's training. you should check the delayed birth records, just in case. unfortunately, my grandmother new almost nothing about her father, he died before she was born and she didn't speak to her aunts and uncles and they had no children. so she never learned about her father and I cannot find their possessions which might answer some questions.     3. A lot of people applied for a delayed birth certificate in the early 1930's because of social security coming into being. My grandmother and grandfather applied for and got a delayed birth certificate and neither one left the country or traveled. Hope that helps. Maybe you can see if they applied for a social security card.
