In the Schmitz campaign for mayor he warned him against associating with Abe Ruef, but Schmitz refused saying Ruef was his friend and they were going to stand together. At the end of Chapter IV, Older wrote: "This was the beginning of the struggle that led into every cross-section of San Francisco; into the depths of the underworld; to attempted murder; to dynamiting and assassination... the struggle that involved the biggest men in the American business world, and wrecked them; that ended by filling San Francisco with armed thugs and overturning the Southern Pacific rule of California." ------------- The SF Library has it.
