    3. Coalinga was originally called Coaling Station by the Southern Pacific Railway: the name was then Hispanicized by combining coaling with -a. This is according to a book by William Bright called 1500 California Place Names - Their Origin and Meaning JC

    3. I've also read in several Fresno Bee historic features that the name was originally "Coaling Station A". The Coalinga Chamber of Commerce also mentions that theory on it's website: Legend has it during those days there were three coaling stations; stations A, B and C. The name Coalinga is derived from mixing Coaling with Station A to arrive at the naming of the city." ________________________________ From: Jan Creelman <creelman03@comcast.net> To: norcal@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, January 26, 2010 11:12:06 PM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Coalinga Coalinga was originally called Coaling Station by the Southern Pacific Railway: the name was then Hispanicized by combining coaling with -a.
