Thanks Sam. I used your info as a springboard and went deeper and deeper into Google, using some odd word combinations. Success! Alcalde was 5 miles southwest of Coalinga and was founded in 1880 when the Southern Pacific Railroad extended is rail lines from Huron. It became a lively town, but eventually Coalinga overshadowed it and it fell into oblivion. There's a great, short history of Alcalde on Google books, in Cathy Rehart's "The Valley's Legends and Legacies III." I thought I was fairly familiar with the West Side . . .
