It was thought to be the forerunner of a heavy storm, which has not yet come. The ecipse was not generally foretold by the almanac makers. 2] Why don't it rain? This cold, dry, freezing winter weather is positively provoking, and its continuance will result disastrously to many people, espically the miners in the high diggings. The present Winter has been one of the mildest and most unprofitable ever known in these moutains. Even the high moutains north of us look grey streaked, having recieved only a small porportion of their usual winter coat <snow>. 125 yrs ago. 14, February 1885 Saterday. 1} Surely "this day is big with fate". We refer to Saterday, February 14th, 1885, which is St. Valentine's Day and the Chinese New Year. The Christian and the Pagan can combine and celebrate the dual holiday. 2} Roller skating is all the rage; twisted ankles, skinned elbows, and strained muscles are the fashion. Everybody is buying them. 3} N.S.G.W., There is much talk amoung the young men of our town, natives of California, reguarding the organization of a Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West at this place<Weaverville>. The organization is very popular one in other countries of the state. Membership is confined to white males who were born within the state of California since the 7th day if July 1846, being the day which Commodore SLOAT raised the American Flag at Monterey. There are 26 such in Weaverville and 43 in outside precints in the county.
