    3. Linda,   Hotmail/Outlook is just an email account like Yahoo mail or any other mail.  I know a lot of people who use it and like it.  Everything has a slight learning curve, like where is the sent button:) but you should be able to follow it with no problem.   Skydrive (not skydive) is a cloud based storage/use area.  In other words, it doesn't live on your computer.  The email programs like Yahoo, Gmail, etc. are all cloud based which is great because you can access them from anywhere.  You don't have to be planted in front of your own machine.  You will need a login and password and you'll be off and running.  It should be a smooth transition for you.  Another good part of it is you will be able to receive attachments and other important things!   You should be fine!  I've got my fingers crossed!   Susan ________________________________ From: Linda Mock <lindamock@webtv.net> To: Kirsten Crosson <crosson5@comcast.net>; NORCAL@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, July 3, 2013 10:39 AM Subject: [NORCAL] Sad news, Hi Listers, I just recieved news from MSNtv2 that they will be shutting me down for good 30, September 2013. 1. Re: [NORCAL] Patrick Smith; March 1920

    3. Hi Dee, Thank you for all the information. I tried many years ago to locate more information about my Dad's two uncles. The story was that one of uncles (I thought it was Thomas but it could have been Patrick) owned property in Berkeley where part of the university had been built. I tried to get information about it but was finally in contact with the university department that handled acquisitions and they said no records regarding a lot of the earlier acquisitions. My cousin said that in 1922 two men went to Anaconda asking about relatives of probably Patrick Smith and it had to do with some property. My Grandfather Michael Smith came to California in 1932 to see where my Dad was living and decided he liked the area enough to move from Montana. Evidently he went up to the Bay Area to see about the property but was told it was past the statute of limitations and could not inherit his brother's property. I was hoping to find some information about the property which would lead to more information about my Great Uncles but I have never been successful. After reading your wonderful transcriptions for quite sometime, something clicked the other day and I decided to try and locate some records about Great Uncle Tom Smith. My Dad said all three brothers came to America together in 1891. My Grandfather Michael went back and forth to South America from San Francisco 5 times. I have never found a record of the 3 brothers on any passenger list and I haven't been able to find a San Francisco list of passengers to South America listing my Grandfather. The library in Montana sent Great Uncle Pat's obituary from the Anaconda Standard. The McNichols, Kelly and McGowan who were the pallbearers were my Grandfather and Patrick's cousins. The Doughtery brothers were my Grandmother Catherine Dougherty Smith's cousins from County Donegal. The Smith's were from County Mayo. When I was in Ireland in 1972 with my sister we heard a sad story from our cousins. Evidently my Great Grandfather Patrick Smith wanted my Grandfather Michael (the oldest) to marry the neighboring girl so the two farms would be joined. My Grandfather loved another girl but evidently his father would not allow the marriage. My Grandfather and his two brothers all immigrated to America, thus my Great Grandfather lost his three sons to America. It means a great deal to me to find the resting place of my Great Uncle Tom. My Dad never knew where his uncle was buried and I would like to find the location. It took several years before I found where Great Uncle Pat was buried. I will call the Contra Costa Library this week and see if they will look up the article. I didn't realize there were several article about Great Uncle Pat Smith's death in the Anaconda papers. I don't have a sub to GenealogyBank.com. Are you able to find a lot of information on the website? I just checked the website and searched for Patrick and was surprised to find more information. The Oil & Gas Workers Union sent a message to my Grandfather about his brother's death in Martinez. Amazing! Sorry for the long story but thought it might be interesting to have the background to my request. Thank you for your help and great information. I live about 2 hours south of Martinez but have some health issues that prevent me from traveling to Martinez. 3. Hello, In the past, I've had the papers sent from the California State Library to my local library (in California). My local library will no longer do this, but I believe that CSL will still send them out on ILL. You might check with your local library. Also, I found through the California Newspaper Project that the Contra Costa Library has the year you're looking for. It says they are in original format, which means paper copies, probably in "Big Books' - meaning you'd either have to go there yourself or ask CoCo library staff to do a lookup for you. Have you looked at GenealogyBank.com? There are several articles pertaining to Patrick Smith's death, mentioning his brother Mike, but not mentioning Thomas. These are all in the Anaconda, Montana papers. I can transcribe them for you if you don't have a subscription. (No other survivors are mentioned in these articles, but the pall bearers were: Ed & Willie McNichols; Arthur McGowan, Patrick Kelly and William & Patrick Dougherty). You might also want to ask for an obit on the Contra Costa list. MARRIED - HEALD-NORTON - At Oak Vale Cottage, near St. Helena, on the 9th inst., by Rev. C.W. Dewes; Loring S. HELAD, and Miss Adaline NORTON, both of St. Helena. DIED - PACHECO - At her late residence, near Concord, Mrs. Pacuala PACHECO, wife of Fernanado PACHECO, aged 63 years. LECTURE on JAPAN - Rev. G.M. DEXTER of Vallejo, lately returned from a residence in Japan, is to deliver a lecture at Pacheco next Tuesday evening, the 16th instant, concerning Japanese characteristics and institutions, their form of government, social life and customs, education, morals and religion; with a sketch of the progress of Christianity among them. The lecture has been commended as highly interesting where it has been delivered, and should command a good attendance at Pacheco. RETURNED - Messrs. B.A. DOWNEY and John McKENNEY, of former local musical fame and popularity, after a 2 years absence in the southern portion of the State, have returned to Contra Costa to remain, and declare that they find no place abroad that they have visited to compare with it. FELIX AMONG THE ARABS - Our whilom friend and fellow citizen, Felix A. MATTHEWS, formerly our County Assessor, but for the past 6 or 7 years United States Consul General for the Empire of Morocco, resident at Tangier, opposite Gibraltar, on the African Coast, knows pretty well how to deal with the Arabs, from his early acquaintance with their language and characteristics, and a correspondent of one of the New York papers gives the following report of the way in which he brought the New Basha to a recognition of American property rights: Public attention in Tangier Morocco has lately been excited by a decided action on the part of the United States Counsel General, which almost recalls Commodore Rodgers lively times with the Basha of Tunis in 1805. Tangier has lately been blest with a new Basha Kaid Jilaly ben Hamoo, an old man who had been used to Moorish intrigue and oppression all his life, and has never before been brought into contact with Christians. Some goods for the Sultan lately arrived at Tangier, and Kaid Jilaly proceeded to attach all the camels in the port to convey the packages to Fez. Among others, he appropriated some camels belonging to citizens of different Christian nations. The Italian Consul was the 1st who applied for the restoration of 2 camels belonging to an Italian subject, and the request was granted. This was followed by application of a similar character from the British and American representatives. The Basha refused these applications and on being reminded that he had already granted the same request to the Italian Consul, he exclaimed, Why, you Consuls are like so many monkeys! Whatever one does all the rest must do! Col. F.A. MATTHEWS, our Consul General, immediately called on Mr. WHITE, the British Consul to ask if he would join in resenting the language used by the Basha. Mr. WHITE declined, saying that he would let the insult pass unnoticed; so Colonel MATTHEWS decided to exact satisfaction singly. In pursuance of this resolution he sent word to Sid Mohamed Bargash, the Sultans Minister for Foreign Affairs, informing him that if the Basha did not come personally to the United States Consulate, by 12 oclock that day and make a full apology, he (Col. MATTHEWS) should haul down his flagstaff and cross to Gibraltar, there to await the orders of his government. In reply to MATTHEWS, the Minister begged for an extension of time to 3 p.m., as the day was Friday - the Musselman Sabbath - and the Basha was due at the mosque at 12. Col. MATTHEWS granted this extension and at 3 oclock the Basha and the Minister for Foreign Affairs arrived in state, with a numerous retinue. Col. MATHEWS [spelled 2 ways] received them seated, and when the Basha had fully apologized for the expression of which he had been guilty, rose and shook hands with his contrite visitors. The rejoicings and congratulations in Tangier were loud, as the Basha, in order we suppose to avoid any further complications, immediately afterward released all the camels he had attached. 2. Sorry, Nancy. The lady who indexed that obit no longer has it. Some of us weird folks keep them forever, and others don't. Anyway, she suggests that you contact the Santa Clara public library. They have the Mercury News on microfilm and someone might help you. Cathy Marin Co., CA "There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast" - unknown
