Dear Listers, I am trying to verify the exact date and place of death for this lady, who supposedly died in California in 1937: Kari "Caroline" AUSTIN or AUSTEN (maiden name Thompson) born in Fillmore Co., MN June 12, 1869 was married to Stephen J. Austin and lived in SD and ND. Her husband died at Harvey, ND Mar 7, 1927, and in 1930 Caroline lived with a brother in Minneapolis, MN Later she is supposed to have moved to California, where she died in August of 1937!? Can someone with access to the CADI 1930-1939 possibly help me find this entry? Thanks a million in advance! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane Geilo, Norway
Re.: Issues of "Shapes of Clay" magazine, Gladding, McBean & Co. available online Hello everyone: Since I've had trouble identifying carved stone, terra cotta, and formed cement building details, I decided to use the online issues of "Shapes of Clay" magazine to learn more about terra cotta. (These magazines were published quarterly by Gladding, McBean & Co. General Office: 660 Market Street, San Francisco, Edward F. O'Day, editor. ) I have compiled a list of the issues of "Shapes of Clay" magazine that are available online and listed them below my signature lines. Since Gladding, McBean & Co. was and is a California company and a lot of their terra cotta was used on our California buildings, I thought you might find these issues of interest. These magazines have a lot of history and many, many beautiful photographs of buildings and other objects on which terra cotta was used between in the online issues that start in 1925 with the latest issue published in 1930. The Gladding McBean terra cotta plant is still in operation at Lincoln, Placer County, California today. You can read about the history of the company online at this link: <http://www.gladdingmcbean.com/aboutus.html>http://www.gladdingmcbean.com/aboutus.html According to the description on Google Books, the Gladding, McBean & Company "Job Order Documents" are available at the California State Library: http://books.google.com/books?id=KWylkgAACAAJ&dq=inauthor:%22Gladding,+McBean+and+Company%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=4kjDUbSSL8SeiQLO2YGIAg&ved=0CF0Q6AEwBw "Starting ca. 1897, the plant began keeping job order information in file folders which have now been transferred into archival boxes arranged by job order number. Usually there is an initial job order form with the following information: Building name, location, address, owner, architect, contractor, order specifications and shipping/financing information. Subsequent correspondence between the Lincoln Office and local branch offices tracks the completion of the order. Most of this correspondence is internal within the company but there is some correspondence directly with client companies for some job orders. In addition, some order folders include photographs of the product. Although reference is often made to architectural drawings, none are included in the folders nor are any included with other materials at the California State Library." Peggy B. Hi, I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has access to the 1927 Oakland Tribune? There is an article & picture in the Tues., July 26, 1927 edition of my father with a short note on how he acquired his first car. I have a transcription of the short article, but not the picture. My father, Gerald Compton, 17 yrs. old, was living in Berkeley at the time, but the family also owned a ranch near Chico & he was spending the summer there trying to earn money to buy his first car. Since I live near Chico, I looked up the article in the Chico paper yesterday to find out more of the particulars. It seems that a 19 yr. old from Durham disappeared from his home 4 days earlier & his father had offered a $1,000 reward for his safe return. My father happened to be the one who found the boy-man, & the father gave my dad a check for $300, which he said was all he had at the time. It doesn't say whether the father ever paid my dad the remaining amount or not, but I guess you could buy a car for $300 at that time. I tried GenealogyBank, but came up empty. Thanks for any help that may be available. Shelley =^..^=
Shelley, I found it on Ancestry but I don't know how to share it with the list, so I sent it to your email address . . . Hope it's what you were looking for! Dear Susan, Flavia and other Listers! Thank you very much for your comments on "my" Andrew Jacobson problem in Kern Co., CA. I realize that an obituary will probably be hard to find for Andrew, being he had no family in the area, provided it was the one I am searching for, of which I am not 100% certain. "My" Andrew was alive in 1905, and according to the 1910 census for his mother, her number of children still alive suggests that Andrew had died in the meantime! He is not recorded as having died in Wisconsin or Illinois! Does the CADI indicate Andrew C. Jacobson (Kern Co., CA 1907)'s AGE when he died? Or is it possible to obtain a transcript of the actual death record? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Hello Norcalers, Looking for information on Daniel Gorham and Mary E. Soule. They were married in San Francisco on February 15, 1869. I think they were the parents of Grace Gorham. Were they related to John Gorham and Sarah C. Soule, the parents of Ida Gorham? Ida Gorham was the wife of David Van Pelt.
Lars, Your Andrew Jacobson is indeed listed on the 01 June 1905 census in Stoughton, Dane, Wisconsin. He is living with his mother, Karen who is listed as widowed and his brothers, Martin, Jacob, John. Ole Jacobson, age 54, born in Norway, lives in the house next door and he is a Saloon Keeper. I also find Andrew on the California Death Index (CADI) as Andrew C. Jacobson who died in Kern County on 13 May 1907 as you stated. I find nothing more about him. He had a very short life and unfortunately, probably left no other records. Best of luck, Susan ________________________________ From: Lars Oyane <loya@online.no> To: norcal@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, July 5, 2013 2:51 PM Subject: [NORCAL] 2nd attempt: Andrew Jacobson of Kern Co., CA - who was he? San Lorenzo had many hot houses in the early 40's. I lived in a trailer park on Washington Ave just north of Lewelling on and off during WWII and the whole acreage across the street was filled with hot houses. There were others on Hesperian parallel to Washington. Probably there were some further south on Hesperian before David Bohannan built the first tract house in San Lorenzo Village in 1944 or 1945. I remember having to share the San Lorenzo elementary school by having double sessions with the Village people. The nursery could have been on Hesperian, closer to the Hayward Airport but I think was still considered San Lorenzo. I don't know if this is confusing or a help. Shirley Turner
Thanks Susan, I took the spelling out of the City Directory. I wondered it the street name changed since I doubt that a person of that age would not likely have moved 'down the block." Her name was Jemima Lowrie Branin, Her husband died before 1892 leaving her with 6 children, the oldest was 15. Her husband was a farmer (formerly a butcher) so she must have used that farm to grow flowers and open a nursery. She lived at the corner of Adams and Telegraph, later Adams and Hisperian (maybe the street name changed between 1927 and 1931. Does anyone have access to a telephone book that might give the name of that nursery? Jemima died in 1943 at the age of 97, but she seemed to work in the nursery until the end of her life. She cross bred irises and developed the first thornless rose. I have an article from the California Horticultural Society Journal (Vol. XXVIII, No. 1 January 1967)which states that she was given a medal in 1902 and Golden Gate Park established an iris garden in her memory. Oh Marilyn, It has been 70 years since I lived in California, but Pleasanton was where we lived until 1943. I think I am saying it correctly - San Lorenzo is south of Oakland and north of Fremont. We used to go visit my grandmother in Centerville which is now part of Fremont. (When my mom could get enough gasoline.)I think we went through Niles canyon, not on the road from Oakland to Fremont or San Jose. Wish I would have known about that Iris farm in Pleasanton - iris are my favorite flower - it must be inherited! Nancy From: "Marilyn Demas" <theschoolbell@yahoo.com> Oh, I wonder! I am geographically challenged so don't laugh if I ask if San Lorenzo is anywhere near Pleasanton. I have no clue! There is an Iris farm in Pleasanton that goes way back too.
Thank you! Maybe there was some kind of a "rage" for Irises back then???? ________________________________ From: Susan Stuart <marigoldsglen@yahoo.com> To: Marilyn Demas <theschoolbell@live.com>; "norcal@rootsweb.com" <norcal@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 4, 2013 1:38 PM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Nursery in San Lorenzo It's 17 miles from Pleasanton to San Lorenzo, but still, it's not really close in the scheme of things! ________________________________ From: Marilyn Demas <theschoolbell@yahoo.com> To: "norcal@rootsweb.com" <norcal@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 3, 2013 5:09 PM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Nursery in San Lorenzo Oh, I wonder!
