RE: Howard's occupation in 1920 - I've already said he was listed as a veterinary "something." I've found a voter's registration in the time frame of 1918 thru 1920 for Howard M. Elder. He was living in Seal Beach, Orange County, California at the time & his occupation there is blacksmith. Sharon Kern Co. In a message dated 8/20/2013 1:24:57 P.M. There was a good deal of mining in southern Ca as well. There is/was a newspaper called the Acton Rooster I believe in Los Angeles Co. that had a lot of mining news for about that time frame. marilyn ________________________________ From: Lars Oyane <loya@online.no> To: Margie <twigsnbranches@earthlink.net>; norcal@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, August 22, 2013 9:56 AM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Howard Morton Elder, born FL 1876 - in California 1920 - what became of him? - CADI? Dear Sharon, RoseMary, Margie, Roland and other Listers! Thank you very much to all of you for additional comments on Howard Elder, his occupation, where he lived, on the life at Trona, CA etc. It is interesting to me since I have NEVER been in California myself, and yet so many descendants of "my" Norwegian emigrant families have ended up there! l My guess is, as I have already said, that Howard Elder probably left CA shortly after 1920. Maybe he went to mine in NV, NM or CO? Too bad there aren't any good death indexes for any of these "mining" states... Well, let's hope he'll show up somewhere, sooner or later...! Lars, Yes, I agree that the Howard Elder on the CADI isn't yours. However, he was the only one listed. I tried to access the American Battle Monument Commision's website last night to see if your Howard died in the first world war. However, I kept getting an error message that the website is not loading properly. I tried with 3 different browsers, but still got the same message. The Howard Elder in the 1920 census says his parents are both from Switzerland. It made me wonder if he was the correct Howard. I just tried now and the abmc website came up finally!! No Howard Elder listed there. That doesn't mean he didn't die in that war, just that if he did, it wasn't on foreign soil. Sharon Kern Co. In a message dated 8/21/2013 10:59:26 A.M. I doubt very much he be the one you found dead in Los Angeles, CA; neither the age nor the middle initial seem to "match". He must have moved from CA after 1920, but where..., only God knows...? I was so happy as this message showed up on my screen, and I tried at once to search the CADI 1905-2000 on ancestry.com, only to discover, it isn't there! So, apparently, I have to continue counting on assistance from you to look up people in the CADI for the period from 1905 thru 1939. Then it is a good thing, however, that FamilySearch has published (for free) so many great marriage licenses from the early 1900's, in particular from Los Angeles Co., CA! Sorry Roland. She buys her boots in the boys department. Few men have feet that small. Even my feet haven't been that small since 6th grade. My cousin's son is with Cal Fire or whatever they are calling it now...I'm pretty sure he's an one of the California fires. I normally don't get involved with some of these threads since I no longer live in Northern California - but I just have to jump in here as a 'former Northern California native' who unfortunately now lives near Trona, California in Kern County - located in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. Have you asked the Library in Ridgecrest, CA about this question? That would be the closest place where someone MIGHT know. The California City library which is the town (calls itself a city - NOT) closest to Trona is very limited - believe me - I live here. This area of the Mojave desert (at 2500 foot elevation) had a lot of quarries and mining at one time (some, but not a lot, of gold, quartz, etc) and mostly these towns (I use that word lightly) are deserted and derelict places that time forgot. Sorry to those few people who still claim Trona as their home - but there are probably only one hand full of families living there now, if that many. After that thunder and lightening storm we had come through here a couple of days ago, Trona may have been washed away. That storm had huge lightening strikes VERY CLOSE to us - not mentioned in the media. There still is mining in the hills around here - for borax and for other stuff that gets hauled out going south on the few unmarked rail cars each evening. Just south of me in the town of Mojave they are opening up one of the deserted gold mines - but how much they are finding? They aren't saying. Dear Sharon and other Listers! Thank you very much, Sharon, for interesting messages in regard to Howard Elder. Just a tip. Do not assume that the middle initial or age on the website are correctly transcribed online unless you have ordered a copy of the record. For a long time I assumed the same thing about a distant grandmother. It said that granny was 63 instead of 89 and her middle initial was O instead of B, and the last name was also "off". A few years later when I broke down and ordered a copy, (my parents had attended her funeral so I knew exactly where she died and was buried) the handwriting on it was atrocious, but her parents names (not listed on line) as well as her birthday etc, were correct, as well as the name of her grandchild that signed the record. They were just misread during transcription. This is also the case with census, it evidently didn't matter in some locations how lousy your handwriting or spelling was, you could take down census information if you were literate. Go figure. :-) Just thoughts. -----Original Message----- From: norcal-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:norcal-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lars Oyane Sent: Wednesday, August 21, 2013 11:04 AM To: norcal@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Howard Morton Elder, born FL 1876 - in California 1920 - what be... The reason I ask is that here in Sacramento we had a prominent family named El;ser also, not your Elder, they were in Sacramento in the 1870's, in fact we have an area of So. Sacramento called Elder Creek. I know, there are those of you who believe Elder Creek is named after the Elderberry but it was actually after the Elder family. > marilyn > > > ________________________________ > From: Lars Oyane <loya@online.no> > To: norcal@rootsweb.com > Sent: Sunday, August 18, 2013 8:59 AM > Subject: [NORCAL] Howard Morton Elder, born FL 1876 - in California 1920 - what became of him? - CADI? > > > Dear Listers, > > I wish to share with you today what may appear as a tragic family quarrel: > > Ferdinand Elder, a highly reputed lawyer, and his wife Caroline nee Emerson were married in MN in 1875, and following a short stay in Duval Co.,.
