In 1884 Ben Arthur had a run-in with a man named George Erickson who had been stealing his sheep. Erickson was taken to Weaverville and tried for sheep stealing. Although he was set free and warned not to return to southern Trinity County, Erickson did not heed the warning and was found dead near the Mad River Bridge on September 7, 1886. A man by the name of George Kunz was tried for this murder, and Ben Arthur, along with several other ranchers, was tried for conspiracy in the murder. As a result of Ben's efforts to defend himself, the ranch was taken over by the German Savings and Loan Society (now the Bank of Hibernia). This is an excerpt from "Trinity County Historic Sites" and is referring to a ranch on South of Fork Mountain, near the Humboldt County line.

This is a book you should read. He was the editor of the SF Bulletin. In the Schmitz campaign for mayor he warned him against associating with Abe Ruef, but Schmitz refused saying Ruef was his friend and they were going to stand together. At the end of Chapter IV, Older wrote: "This was the beginning of the struggle that led into every cross-section of San Francisco; into the depths of the underworld; to attempted murder; to dynamiting and assassination... the struggle that involved the biggest men in the American business world, and wrecked them; that ended by filling San Francisco with armed thugs and overturning the Southern Pacific rule of California." ------------- The SF Library has it. Dee, Glad your back. I read all your postings. Still looking for the SOBERANES family in the area of Lucerne (Armona) and Hanford. ISIDORO (YSIDRO) SOBERANES died May 9th 1904 in Fresno County but in the 1900 Census the family was living in Lucerne. He had two children born in 1894 and 1896 that we still can not find a place of birth and Isidor's death certificate gives us nothing as to cause of death or where he is buried. Isidor is my step great-grandfather and he is the grandfather to my cousin PATRICIA (SOBERANES) MACIAS. Patsy and I have been getting a lot of help from a gentleman that contacted me in regards to my last posting to you for help in this matter. To him I say Thank You, with great appreciation. He has taken time out of his life to do research for someone he doesn't know and to us that proves we are one family. The mystery of the where abouts of ISIDORO (YSIDRO) SOBERANES is our quest for 2010 and Patsy and I are hopeful that we will find his resting place soon. Your continuing help with the newspaper transcriptions could give us that one clue we need to find ISIDORO (YSIDRO) SOBERANES and make our family connections. The wife of Isidor was MRCIALLA BUELNA a direct descendant of JOSE ANTONIO BUELNA a spanish soldier and one of the first colonial settlers to California in the late 1700's. It's our belief that Isidor is a descendant of MARIANO DE JESUS SOBERANES y CASTRO and MARIA RAYMUNDA CASTILLO Y SINOVA and that making his connection would complete this family line for Patsy's Soberanes connection. Keep up the appreciated good work and Happy New Year. Sandra O'Haro Sheddy.
I have to ask. Any chance it should be Hettenshaw rather than Hetenchow? Is it where Zenia road turns toward Alderpoint? It's been reservation land since the early 1900s. He admitted taking the horse and saddle, but said he rode the horse over to his parents in Fresno county to get legal advice and intended to return. Justice Randall did not believe the evidence against the boy prisoner sufficient to warrant holding him and the case against him was dismissed. ------------------------------------------------------ LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -There has been 3 deaths among children in this city during the past week by the dread combination of diseases -- measles and whooping cough. -B.J. HICKMAN, returned to Visalia with her. THERE WAS A SURPRISE PARTY at E.L. HUBBELL's last Sunday, when his brother, Fred R., and wife, from Wisconsin walked in unexpectedly. The visitors will probably remain here, as they are well please with the climate and general appearance of the county. They are from the south-western part of Wisconsin, where, when they came away, the ground was frozen to a depth of 3 feet and where for 4 weeks the thermometer never went higher than 3 degrees above zero. Such weather is certainly a contrast to Kings County, Cal, with its warm sunshine. C.S. HILL, manger of the Hanford Abstract Co., has shown his skill as a wood carver by manufacturing a violin, which is of very neat appearance and which has a rich tone. The back, sides and neck are made of maple and the front of spruce, all carved out of the solid wood by the use of a penknife, glass and sand paper. The instrument in longer, deeper and narrower than the instrument is usually made. It is an artistic piece of work. THEODORE GEBHARDT returned to Hanford last Friday evening. He is again behind the block at J.M. DAGGS' California market, a position he filled for several years before. THE 12-YEAR-OLD daughter of Edgar GEROW sustained a fracture of the right arm, by a fall from some boards which were 8 or 10 feet from the ground, on Thursday of last week, at her father's farm. Dr. J.M. BOND was called and set the limb. ------------------------------------------------------- GRANGEVILLE -- -Mrs. VAUGHN has been quite sick the past week, but is getting better now. -Mrs. WILCOX, nee BLOYD, is visiting her parents, Mr.&Mrs. Wash BLOYD. -Miss Mary BOLINGER, who has been visiting here, returned to her home in the northern part of the State on Friday. -Mrs. KAHN has been suffering from an attack of asthma, lately, and her daughter, Mrs. NATHAN, will accompany her to Oakdale Tuesday, to try if a change of climate will not be beneficial to her. -Lincoln BURRELL, who left last week for Los Angeles to join his family, writes that he secured work in 3 days and has now the prospect of a steady job this summer.
