    3. An uncle of mine, Edward Ament, and his wife Floy were instrumental in starting the Greenville Indian School in Greenville, Plumas Co, about 1890. It was later, 1897, taken over by the BIA. If I remember correctly, the kids had to wear uniforms and only speak English. Yes, they were established to assimilate Indians into the white culture. Before the BIA took over, the young women were allowed to practice basket weaving. I have a basket made at the school and given to another relative, Emma Trubody. Emma taught school there in the early1890s. Edward Ament left the area about the time that the BIA took over and went on to become Mayor of Berkeley CA, 1932 to 1939. The other Indian school I know of, was Stewart Indian School in Carson City Nevada. Several of the kids from there were in Weimar Joint Sanatorium for tuberculosis at the same time I was. 1953 to 1955. The hospital was ran by 13 CA counties and the Federal Gov. There were Indian kids there from Carson City, NV, Bishop CA, and Owyee, NV. There may have been Indian Schools in all those locations, but I don't know for sure. 1. [NORCAL] Hanford, Kings Co., CA -- 16 April 1895
    2. Dee Sardoc
    3. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Tuesday, 16 APRIL 1895 ************************************ BIRTH -- MADDOX -- Near Hanford, Friday, April 12th, to the wife of David MADDOX, a daughter. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Peter WYSE, a carriage painter of Lemoore, died suddenly in that town yesterday forenoon. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- The mother of J.J. FRENCH, of this city, died in Texas last Tuesday, aged 84 years. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Mrs. S. RAWLINS, mother of J.E. and H.W. RAWLINS of this city, died in Guildford, Surrey, England, on April 8th, age 74 years. The cause of death was influenza. She leaves 7 children, 4 sons & 3 daughters, all of whom reside in England with the exception of J.E. and H.W. RAWLINS. Deceased leaves a valuable estate. ------------------------------------------------------- AN INSANE MAN -- He Was Dangerous to Be at Large -- Gave the Officers a Lively Fight -- Alf. O. PEARSON, a single man 35 years of age, a brother-in-law of James McCORD of Dallas, was committed to the Stockton insane asylum by Judge Jacobs last Saturday and on Sunday was taken to that institution by Sheriff Buckner. PEARSON had been employed by Mr. McCORD. He began showing signs of insanity last August and the symptoms have since been getting worse. He was quarrelsome and apparently spoiling for a fight, and as he always went armed with a pistol and dirk knife, he was a dangerous man to be at large. We are informed that he has always been a "bad man;" that he had trouble in the East with officers, who beat him over the head, and has since been a little "off," as the saying goes. He was sitting in a chair at the Hotel Hanford when arrested by Sheriff Buckner, Constable Bernstein and Deputy Sheriff Ayers. He was apparently taken by surprise and submitted to be handcuffed, but, being a large strong man, the officers had a hard time when, in front of the Opera House, on the way to the jail, he tried to get away. Doctors FELTON and MILLER examined him and pronounced him insane. The unfortunate man struck, kicked, and bit the officers when, on Sunday morning, they tried to get him up and dressed to go away on the train, but he was finally overpowered. He was sullen all the way to Stockton. He was not violent, but refused to walk or move when told by the Sheriff, and the latter had to lift him about. ----------------------------------------------------- TULARE COUNTY WHITECAPS -- They Pay a Midnight Visit to an Obnoxious Character With Bad Results -- Last Tuesday night the vicinity of the village of Poplar, Tulare county, was the scene of a shooting scrape which resulted in the death of 1 man and the wounding of another. Sheriff MERRITT, who made an investigation of the affair, gives the following results thereof to the Visalia 'Delta:' Frank POTTER, a young man who resided in the vicinity of Poplar, had incurred the displeasure of the people around there for his all-around-good-for-nothingness. He and a Mrs. MOORE were on intimate terms, and their conduct was a scandal to the neighborhood. A vigilance committee was organized for the purpose of waiting on POTTER and ordering him to leave the country. POTTER heard of the intended visit and he went over to Capt. HAYES' ranch and slept in a bunk house there. About 1 o'clock last Wednesday morning the committee waited on POTTER, and the chairman explained that it was the sentiment of the community that he was a nuisance and that he move out of the neighborhood. The members of the committee, about 20 in number, all wore masks. POTTER did not take kindly to the advice and he commenced shooting into the crowd with a gun. SMITH was shot in the abdomen, penetrating the intestines and ranging downward, shattering the right hip bone. The bullet was abstracted by the physicians. POTTER secured a horse and left the country without visiting his folks, and it is not probable he will ever return. The names of the members of the posse, except ELLIS and SMITH, could not be learned. ELLIS, the wounded man, is an elderly gentleman, and an ex-Supervisor from the Tule River district. Both are doing well and neither is dangerously wounded. ------------------------------------------------------- A BOOMERANG, made by Charley STEVES, was tried by a number of people in front of the Hotel Artesia yesterday afternoon. It boomeranged all right, but only 1 person, March FORD, a schoolboy, could throw it so that it was sure to return to the place from which it was thrown. It was made of 2 pieces of redwood, bound together with cord. ------------------------------------------------------ LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -J.M. STANLEY was able to get to town yesterday, after an illness of about 3 weeks with La Grippe. -G. Di GEORGI, now of Sumner (Kern City), was visiting in Hanford last Wednesday. -Benjamin MOCK, recently of Fresno, is now a salesman in the clothing department of the Kutner-Goldstein Co. -J.M. DAGGS is fitting up the restaurant next door to his meat market. It will be conducted by his sister, Mrs. KELLY, as a boarding house. -Brakeman BACON was reinstated to his former position on the Goshen-Huron road last week. -C.A. McCOURT and family removed last week to the West Side, where the professor will teach a school during the summer at Avenal. -W.V. WALKER of Kansas City, Mo., is here on a visit to his brother, Prof. E.H. WALKER, principal of the High School. -J.M. DAGGS is fattening a young bear to serve on the block at his market next Christmas. He traded 4 guinea fowls for Bruin. -Miss Anna HURLBUT and Ola CLOW will conduct my millinery business in Hanford the remainder of the season, during my absence at Los Angeles. -- Mrs. J.K. GREEN -LUE FUNG, 1 of the Chinamen accused of assaulting his Portuguese employer over on the West Side, was released from the custody of Sheriff Buckner on a writ of habeas corpus, last Wednesday. THE FATHER and mother of Dr. J.A. MOORE will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary the 24th of May, back in Indiana. The old couple are hearty and enjoying good health. It is not often that such a wedding anniversary is recorded. GEORGE N. GROVE, recently foreman of the 'Journal,' leaves this evening for Los Angeles. He has been succeeded by Leslie SHERMAN, a competent job printer and rapid compositor, who began learning his trade under the present publisher of the 'Journal' while the latter was foreman of the St. Helena 'Times,' in 1883. A. BLIX, superintendent of the water works, was called to Visalia last Tuesday as a witness in a land case. The engine and pump ran just the same during the time he was gone as when he was here, with his wife, Mrs. BLIX, in charge. She understands the workings, and also repairing of, both the engine and pump. We believe there is only 1 other female engineer on the coast. It is hard to tell what work woman cannot do when she starts in, and the limit of her sphere of usefulness is not yet fixed. PATENTS have been received at the Visalia land office for the following parties residing in Kings County: Samuel B. ATKINSON of Lemoore L.M. FREDERICK of Hanford Jessie EPPERSON and heirs of James M. EPPERSON, of Dudley MRS. R.C. DUNCAN of Pittsburg, and Mrs. Joseph RAMSEY of St. Louis, mother and aunt of Dr. DUNCAN, who have been visiting him and his wife this winter and who made many friends while here, are now visiting Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Diego and other notable places south, after which they will visit in Oklahoma, and Chattanooga, Tenn. ------------------------------------------------------- ARMONA -- -Miss Myrtle SHAY is sick with measles. -Mrs. J.H. FLEENOR is seriously ill with the measles. -Mr. Geo. M. WEEMS arrived from southern Illinois last Thursday morning to spend the summer with his brother. He is well pleased with this part of California. GRANGEVILLE -- -Mrs. Ike RITCHIE's mother, Mrs. SHEPHERD of Fresno, is visiting with her this week. -Mr. STACEY and wife, with their 2 sons, a brother of our esteemed townsman, W. STACEY, are visiting here. Transcribed by Dee Sardoch To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/

MARRIAGE -- HICKS-AXTELL -- In Hanford, Sunday, April 7th, by Justice G.W. RANDALL; James H. HICKS and Miss Clara AXTELL. [The wedding took place in the parlors at the residence of the bride's parents, in the Axtell block. It was a quiet wedding, with only a few relatives of the bride and groom in attendance. The bride is the youngest daughter of those old pioneers of Kings County, Mr.&Mrs. E. AXTELL, and was born within less than a mile of this city. The father and mother of the bride were present and bid fair to remain many years yet in the county where they have resided for 21 years, with whose early history they were prominently identified. The groom is the genial and efficient Night Watchman of Hanford. The happy couple have the best wishes of the 'Journal' for a long life of happiness and prosperity.] DEATH -- CHAMBERS -- Near Hanford, April 1st, one of twin girls of Mr.&Mrs. Thos. CHAMBERS. DEATH -- MULLINIX -- At Three Rivers, Tulare county, Cal., March 31st, Mrs. I.D. MULLINIX. [Deceased was quite well known in Kings county. Her husband, "Doc" MULLINIX, conducted a hostelry near Mineral King. She was highly esteemed by friends and acquaintances.] [Three River, April 4th, 1895 -- On Tuesday morning of this week there was a gathering of people at the house lately occupied by Mr. I.D. MULLINIX. The friends and acquaintances of Mrs. MULLINIX came bringing flowers, but with sad hearts, for as they entered the house they placed the beautiful wreaths, crosses and bouquets on a coffin, in which rested all that was earthly of the genial friend to whom they were paying this tribute of love and respect. The funeral services were simple and touching. At the house was sung, "Shall we Gather at the River?" and as they sang of that heavenly river, the sound of the rolling waters of the old Kaweah outside seemed an appropriate accompaniment to the hymn; and its solemn sounds seemed to change to those of triumph at the words of the chorus -- "Yes, we will gather at the river." After a little while the coffin was lifted and carried by strong, but very gentle hands to a short distance from the house and lowered in the grave. No sexton w as th ere, but friendly hands filled in the earth, and after 2 more hymns, the narrow resting place was carefully rounded and shaped and made beautiful by the flowers. This was all that could be done for the dead, and slowly the procession returned to the house and after a few more words of sympathy to the husband and little motherless ones, all went their way. The pall bearers were Messrs. J.W. LOVELACE, N.M. BARTON, W.[illeg] -EAN, J.D. HOLLAND, John DILLON, N. BRITTEN, F.M. ATWOOD and Wm. REEVES. ------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Mrs. S.L. LANDIS leaves tonight for a visit to her old home in Tennessee. -J. Newton LEGGITT has been appointed a deputy by Tax Collector SLAVIN and has begun his duties. -A sister of Mrs. E.J. HUMMEL and the former's husband, from Sonora, Tuolumne county, are visiting her in Hanford. -Mrs. Justin JACOBS spent a few days in Hanford last week, returning on Saturday morning to San Francisco, where her son Scott is attending school. -Levoy LANDIS is back from College City, where he has been attending school. -Wm. Washington BATEMAN has gone to London, Eng., and expects to be gone for 6 months. THE DELIGHTFUL WEATHER of the past few days is proving very beneficial to the sick. The daughter of Mr.&Mrs. M.L. SHORT, the daughter of James and Frances MILLER, and the youngest son of Mr.&Mrs. F.V. DEWEY, who have been dangerously ill, are all improving with chances favorable to their recovery. A.H. TUTTLE, who left this city for Alaska, arrived at Juneau, in that country, on March 28th. He writes to C.C. SPINKS under date of March 29th, that he has been sick ever since he left S.F. and will not leave for the Yukon river until he feels better. The town, he says, is full of men waiting for the snow and ice to melt to get over on the Yukon. LAST SUNDAY evening on his way home to supper, C.C. SPINKS stopped in at the saloon of Dan McSHERRY. As soon as he entered a Swede assaulted him, giving him 3 blows on the head with a beer glass, which resulted in some ugly gashes of the scalp. It took 6 stitches to sew them up. The Swede at once left town and has not been captured. Mr. SPINKS is able to be about and attend to his duties as proprietor of the Caribou saloon. C.S. COOPER met with an accident last Sunday afternoon. He drove out to the baseball grounds with some lemonade for his son, Forrey. While the game was in progress the team took fright, and making a sharp turn, threw Mr. COOPER out. He lit on his head and shoulders and was unconscious for some time. He was badly bruised, but escaped serious injury. The team started to cross the ditch near R. LAMBERT's, when the tongue ran into the bank and broke off, and the team was stopped there without doing any further damage to the rig. CHARLES SMITH, foreman on the A.V. TAYLOR ranch, had Daniel WILSON, a former employee of the ranch, arrested and charged with an assault with a deadly weapon, to-wit: a bar of iron. The 2 men had a dispute over wages and both men were considerably scratched up in a melee which followed. The case was tried before Justice Randall last Friday and was dismissed. ANOTHER of those social dances takes place at Lakeside Hall on Friday night next, proceeds for the benefit of little Frank PENTER, a cripple. The Tulare orchestra will furnish the usual good music. Admission, $1 per couple, including supper. Nearly all the dances given at Lakeside now have some charitable object in view, so those who attend not only have an enjoyable time, but aid the needy. -------------------------------------------------------- GRANGEVILLE -- -John SULLIVAN had a spring wagon stolen from his barn Saturday night. -Bob HARMON has gone to the city. He will consult a physician while there, as his health is rather poor. -Mrs. Andy AYERS has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Mae RAILSBACK, this week. -Miss Lotta CAMPBELL, of Stockton, arrived Sunday and will spend the summer with her aunt, Mrs. AWALT of Summit Lake. -Mrs. McGREGORY of the Armona Hotel met with a very serious accident Friday night. It seems that the lady had been to show one of the guests to their room, and in coming down stairs her foot slipped and she fell the full distance of the stairs. It is feared that she suffered some internal injury. ARMONA -- -Alvin GAUNT is kept home from school with the measles. -Miss Helen SHORE has quit school. Dr. DUNCAN was summoned. She is not yet out of danger. Her friends hope for her speedy recovery. Transcribed by Dee Sardoch To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/

Just trying one more time to see if there are kin out there who are related to the late Walter and Louise McKelvey who lived on Fruitvale Ave , Oakland in 1930 and who bought a summer place in the Santa Cruz mtns. in 1940. I have their "guest book" with lots of comments of thanks to them for hospitality. I have been unsuccessful in making a connection - phone numbers not in service, wrong family, etc. I want to get this book back to a family member. I don't think anyone would appreciate it if it were just on a library shelf. Thanx Barbara in Sacramento

    3. I read that the only Kamikaze pilots to wear parachutes were those defending the home Islands with instructions to ram the B-29s. Most of these were not successful in bailing out in time as they were ill trained and could not estimate their air speed in time. As for a "Geisha" I have not found proof and in watching documentaries on the Military Channel and History Channel, a lot of Japanese who did not "complete" their death mission, had wished for such a treat instead of a head band, etc. Raymond -------------------------------------------------- From: "roland elliott" <rolandelliott2@wildblue.net> Sent: Saturday, January 16, 2010 01:10 AM To: <norcal@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Notorious California Events > No it was for their confidence they were not trained pilots and few had > more > than three T&G's,but they had a "Geisha" and Sake > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "James R Smith" <jim@historysmith.com> > To: <norcal@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, January 15, 2010 3:12 PM > Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Notorious California Events > > > Right you are, Roland. > > FYI - Kamikaze pilots carried parachutes so that IF their plane couldn't > make it to a target, they could bail out to retry. 3.
