    3. Genealogy Bank may or may not be a wonderful service. My issue which NorCal was to be commercial free to assist others. One of the main goals was to have a volunteers in each Northern California county to assist others. Genealogy Bank and others are now allowed to post their fee services which changes this forum. 3. I've also read in several Fresno Bee historic features that the name was originally "Coaling Station A". The Coalinga Chamber of Commerce also mentions that theory on it's website: Legend has it during those days there were three coaling stations; stations A, B and C. The name Coalinga is derived from mixing Coaling with Station A to arrive at the naming of the city." ________________________________ From: Jan Creelman <creelman03@comcast.net> To: norcal@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, January 26, 2010 11:12:06 PM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Coalinga Coalinga was originally called Coaling Station by the Southern Pacific Railway: the name was then Hispanicized by combining coaling with -a. 3. Jeanne, I have belonged to GenealogyBank since almost the beginning. I am an Asst Genealogist in a family name Genealogical Society, I do monitor the current posted obits for folks dying with "THE" surname. I do also monitor legacy.com - GenealogyBank does have a different assortment of current obits from those posted at legacy, or thru Obituary Daily Times. Personally, I have huge family in San Jose. GenealogyBank has the paper for the early part of last century. I have read much of the pre-scandal from my great-grandfather, and was able to share with the rest of the family the ramp-up to the divorce. I find the service good enough that I have renewed at least once, if not twice. But, you can plug in your names of interest, see how many hits you get and based on that see if it seems worth while to you. Hope this helps all the folks assessing if this service seems to be useful to them or not... -----Original Message----- From: norcal-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:norcal-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jeanne Moody Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 8:30 AM To: norcal@rootsweb.com Subject: [NORCAL] Genealogy Bank Does anyone use Genealogy Bank? 3. I'm butting in here, but does anyone know how Coalinga got it's name? It is from the railroad nomenclature: "Coaling A" which was a station where the engine tender was filled with coal. SANBORN et al. vs. Mrs. Frutilla EATON (widow of Matt EATON) et al., began in the Superior Court of Kings County before Judge Jacobs this forenoon. It is an important case, judging from the legal talent engaged and the number of witnesses employed. BRADLY & FARNSWORTH and E.O. LARKINS are attorneys for the defense, while DAGGETT & ADAMS are attorneys for plaintiffs. All the attorneys are from Visalia. Mrs. EATON and SANBORN are both riparian owners of water rights in Mill Creek. Mrs. EATON's land is partly in Tulare Co. and SANBORN's all in Kings Co. Suit is brought to restrain defendant, Mrs. SANBORN, from diverting water from the creek onto her land. ------------------------------------------------------ LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -The children at Thomas JENKINSON's, near Armona, have all been ill recently with measles. -A.M. LACQUE has returned from a 6 weeks' trip to Sonoma County. W.E. PHILLIPS, are visiting him during vacation. They will go from here to Los Angeles to visit another brother. LAST THURSDAY there were only 5 patients in the county hospital, 1 having gone away the day previous. One of the patients is nearly a centenarian -- Elijah CYPHES, aged 96. The old gentleman is quite cheerful and lively, but does not walk around much. He is apparently good for his 100th year. F.W. CANTERBURY, of Lemoore, met with a peculiar accident last Friday. He had gone over beyond Kings River some 6 miles to look at a new well cap recently invented. It was made of iron and was heavier than he thought and it fell into one of his hands, below which was a broken bottle. His had was badly cut and an artery was severed. He bled terribly and came near fainting away from loss of blood. He hastened to Lemoore for medical assistance. Several pieces of glass were removed from his hand. At last accounts he was doing well but had been threatened with lockjaw. THE PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION of H.A. PIERCE, on a charge of stealing a steer belonging to David BURRIS, was held before Justice Randall last Friday. Several witnesses for the prosecution told of defendant having the steer in his possession and driving it away to Fresno county. Josh BURRIS, a son of the prosecuting witness, D. BURRIS, was the only witness introduced for the defense, and he testified that defendant and defendant's wife had both notified him that the steer was at their place and asked him to take it away. Justice Randall dismissed the case against PIERCE, stating at the same time that he believed PIERCE drove the steer away with the intent to keep the same and thus commit larceny, but that it was probable a jury would not convict defendant on the evidence elicited and he did not wish the county to incur unnecessary expense. B.F. FLEENOR closed his writing school at Lakeside last Saturday. He will, he informs us, soon go to Oregon to assist Bishop DILLON of the United Brethren Church in tent meetings. His 6-year-old daughter, who is now here, will accompany him. ------------------------------------------------------ GRANGEVILLE -- -Mr. Louie KOHN, of S.F., a brother of Mrs. NATHAN, is here for a few days on business. -Kentucky contributed 2 more of her good Democratic sons to Kings County on Wednesday, in the persons of John and William HUMPHREYS. They have already gone to work and so far are very well pleased with the country. -Jess LANE has improved very much lately in photography. The picture he took of Mrs. M.A. HORLOCK's house and front yard is very good, and for clearness of shading and finish is not often equaled by regular artists. -Mr. I. RICHIE arrived safely at Juneau, Alaska, but too late to cross the mountains to Cook's Inlet, as the snow has commenced to thaw, so he will have to go round by steamer, which does not sail for 6 weeks. He writes that board is cheap (about 35 cents a day) and as the weather is fine, he expects to be able to get work in the quartz mill until he leaves. Will AGEE and the others, who preceded him from here, have arrived safely as far as Cook's Inlet. Transcribed by Dee Sardoch To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/

HAMMOND, of Grangeville, returned recently from a 10 days trip to Templeton, San Luis Obispo county, where he went to attend the funeral of his father. He arrived a little too late to see his father alive. The latter was aged 67 years. Mr. HAMMOND reports that crops of grain over in San Luis Obispo county will be good. Grain is nearly the entire crop over there. There is, Mr. HAMMOND says, going to be quite an emigration this year from there owing to the country being too dry, and as Kings county has a good reputation with the people beyond the Coast Range, no doubt many could be induced to come here and locate if the advantages of the county and the reasonable prices for land now ruling was brought to their attention. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Sarah E. THOMPSON, of Lemoore, was recently granted a divorce from J.F. THOMPSON, and given the possession of a minor child and allowed $10 per month alimony. ------------------------------------------------------ A WOMAN WITH A MISSION -- We have been requested to publish the following notice: "Dr. Sarah Ann PATTERSON can cure melancholy insanity -- the so-called incurable kind of insanity; also big-headed children and obesity. All inquires and letters promptly answered by the doctor, whose address is Traver, Tulare Co., Cal." Mrs. PATTERSON is an elderly woman from Traver, who says she has a mission. A phrenologist who came to Traver a year or so ago, examined her head and told her she could cure melancholy insanity and that she is the only person in the world who could do it. She proposes not only to cure such cases, but to establish a hospital in some town in the San Joaquin Valley and wants bids from the different places for the location of it, and the town which gives the most will secure it. This is the chance of Hanford's existence and we expect to see our wealthy men come forward and aid this beneficent enterprise and make our city world famous. All other papers in the San Joaquin Valley are requested to publish Mrs. PATTERSON's notice. ------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -O.B. McCORD's barn in this city, was nicely caught by Mr. McCORD, who laid for him at Davis' Bros. 2nd-hand store and caught ADAMS when he came there to sell the tools. MRS. E.J. HUMMEL and son went to Bakersfield last Saturday to join Mr. HUMMEL, who has charge of the yard of the Wendling Lumber Co. there. The family leave in Hanford many friends who sincerely regret their departure and wish them prosperity in their new home. BEN LOGAN, who at one time tended bar in the Hughes saloon in this city, attempted, with a confederate, to rob an old miner named WIRTH at Porterville last Tuesday, but was prevented by the timely arrival of officers. LOGAN was captured, but his pal escaped. MR.&MRS. F.H. ALLEN left Hanford last Thursday for a hunt in the Sierras. Previous to their departure Mr. ALLEN sold out his stock of 2nd-hand goods to Chas. SHARP, but he will return later and, in partnership with another gentleman, open a store here in another location. BUDD GANN, an uncle of Mrs. Patrick SWEENEY, is visiting the latter here. He is from Brentwood, this State, but is stuck on Kings county. He says the much boasted Pajaro and Salinas valleys are not in the race with the baby. He has not been in this State for many years and says if he had been told of the great developments and the richness of the infant county, he could not have believed it. THE LEMOORE school was practically closed for the term last Friday, although Profs. HINKLE and WILSON had a few days more to teach. Miss WOODWARD's department has closed its labors. 3. Cliff, My great grandmother and her 3 brothers, two sisters were taken from their family in the late 1880's and sent to the Chemawa Indian School in Salem OR. My family is from the Shasta Nation, Okwanuchu Tribe. In the state archives in Sacramento, there are many records from the school. The Indians didn't keep very good written records, but once the government got hold of them, everything was documented. I was able to read report cards, medical records, information on scars or other unique charactoristics, when one of the family would escape and when they were brought back. Some of my relatives live on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation, others at the Grand Ronde, and some in the Walla Walla area. My great grandmother was released around 1898 and moved to Sacramento. She had the traditional three tatoo lines on her chin and lived until the 1950's in the Bryte area.   It is amazing what you can find in the records - and interesting to learn more about family history. Thanks for your story. I have been to Greenville many times. I re-modeled the Forest Service living quarters there in the early 1980's.   Rock   --- On Sun, 1/17/10, Cliff <cday@surewest.net> wrote: From: Cliff <cday@surewest.net> Subject: Re: [NORCAL] California Indian Schools To: norcal@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, January 17, 2010, 2:00 PM An uncle of mine, Edward Ament, and his wife Floy were instrumental in starting the Greenville Indian School in Greenville, Plumas Co, about 1890. It was later, 1897, taken over by the BIA.  If I remember correctly, the kids had to wear uniforms and only speak English.  Yes, they were established to assimilate Indians into the white culture.  Before the BIA took over, the young women were allowed to practice basket weaving.  I have a basket made at the school and given to another relative, Emma Trubody. Emma taught school there in the early1890s.  Edward Ament left the area about the time that the BIA took over and went on to become Mayor of Berkeley CA, 1932 to 1939. The other Indian school I know of, was Stewart Indian School in Carson City Nevada.  Several of the kids from there were in Weimar Joint Sanatorium for tuberculosis at the same time I was. 1953 to 1955.  The hospital was ran by 13 CA counties and the Federal Gov.  There were Indian kids there from Carson City, NV, Bishop CA, and Owyee, NV.  There may have been Indian Schools in all those locations, but I don't know for sure.
