Thank you Margaret, I have a pic of the sign "Vitzthum Gulch" road. When you are passing through the Red Barn is what is left of the Vitzthum barn - they had to slit it to make way for 299. The little white house just to the East is where my grandmother was raised. This family really seemed to keep to themselves. I think since Mom spent the last 30 years of her life in the Hospital and the men ran the household there wasn't as much notice. Betty
Betty, the Vitzthum family was a well known Trinity County pioneer family. I checked my indexes for the TJ and find no mention of this family, but I will keep my eyes open. There is a Vitzthum road or lane sign I have seen many times. If I think of it I will take a pic of it next time I'm by there. Margaret, Which Journals (dates) do you have access to? Betty
from about 1880-1920, remember I only have news items that deal with the New River country in Trinity County. My guess is that it referred to the County. In the 1800s you lived in a county and sometimes mentioned a township. My mother said she was born in "Mendocino City" to differentiate from the county. In many places, people would say what township they lived in as everyone lived in a township but that seems rarely to have been the case in California. We did have a discussion a while back about the location Fremont in Santa Clara County; turns out that what we call "North County" was originally the township of Fremont but I don't recall any San Joaquin township in the county. cheers, Gard > We found an old letter where the lady said they were living > "at San > Joaquin"......I know San Joaquin County but was there a > settlement along the > > San Joaquin River that actually went by that name in the > late 1800s? > > Thanx > Barbara > >
I just realized that I didn't fully answer your question. The San Joaquin River is near the town of San Joaquin and at one time it may have been closer but because rivers are not static, it could have changed it's path many, many times in the last 100-150 years. My grandparents were supposedly married there but it just as well could have been San Joaquin County. One of the things I still have to check out. Yes, there is a town called San Joaquin. It is about 5 miles west of Mendota in Fresno County. Hi Janet, I don't know a whole lot about Weaverville/Trinity newspapers, but I did find that Shasta Public Library has a list of all the newspapers they have in their collection. You can find that list at this site: http://www.shastalibraries.org/spl/index.php?ref=Newspapers&num=All You can also go to the California Newspaper Project & search their catalog for Trinity - it will tell you what has survived, where it is located (Bancroft Library & California State Library have extensive California newspaper collections) & what dates are available. Just Google California Newspaper Project & keep clicking on Search the CNP until you get to the search form. Your local library may be able to get films on InterLIbrary Loan.
