    3. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Friday, 15 MAY 1896 *********************************** BIRTH -- BEARE -- Near Traver, May 3, 1896, to Mr.&Mrs. J.W. BEARE, a daughter. BIRTH -- NELSON -- In Hanford, Cal., May 11, 1896, to the wife of Chris NELSON, a daughter, weight 10 pounds. BIRTH -- HALL -- In Hanford, Cal., May 14, 1896, to the wife of L.E. HALL, a daughter, weight 11 pounds. DEATH -- CORTNER -- In Stockes Valley, Tulare County, Cal., May 9, 1896, James F. CORTNER, aged 24 years. DEATH -- GILBERT -- Near Traver, Cal., May 9, 1896, 6-year-old son of Mr.&Mrs. Richard GILBERT, of Los Angeles, Cal. -------------------------------------------------------- ANOTHER FIRE -- The barn of Philip McRAE, located in the rear of the double house occupied by his family and that of J.W. BARBOUR, was destroyed by fire this forenoon. The origin of the fire is unknown. Mr. BARBOUR was sitting in the kitchen and the first he knew of the fire was when he heard the crackling of the flames. He ran out and attempted to save a horse belonging to D.R. CAMERON. He pulled down the corral fence and tried to drive the animal out, but it ran into a stall and refused to leave. Just as Mr. BARBOUR became exhausted from his efforts another man ran up and succeeded in getting the horse out, but we hear that the animal was badly burned. D.R. CAMERON and P. McRAE both lost a buggy apiece. The high wind blew the flames away from the house, or it would surely have been burned too, as it is a long way from the Holly hydrants and the hose could hardly have been gotten there in time to save the house. -------------------------------------------------------- TO EL DORADO and RETURN -- W.L. PRYOR, who left Hanford by team on the 1st of May for the El Dorados county mines, arrived home last Monday night. He reports seeing very poor wheat crops along the road between here and Fresno via Kingston, but north of there, along the railroad, after he got 10 miles from Fresno, he saw good grain of all kinds -- wheat, barley and rye -- clear up to Stockton. From Stockton, Mr. PRYOR drove on till he came to a friend's, 8 miles from Latrobe, in El Dorado county, where he spent 3 days in prospecting, with no success, and he decided to come home. It is all quartz mining near Latrobe, one of the largest mines being the Big Jim, owned by a Chinaman, who has a Caucasian wife. Jim is estimated to be worth $2,000,000. His wife is a Mormon and Jim supports a minister of that denomination and keeps up a church at Latrobe, entirely at his own expense. Jim's brother is also married to a white woman. Mr. PRYOR returned home by train. At Sacramento he saw 3 large buildings which he hauled all the brick for in the early days. He says where the capital now stands there used to be hay scales located in the early times. Mr. PRYOR enjoyed the trip very much and also visiting the scenes of his early days in the Golden State. ------------------------------------------------------ LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -David ROSS has sold his dairy to H.C. SATTERLEE. -Joseph RODGERS is now clerking in I.S. SHEY's store. -Herbert GRANT of Visalia is visiting relatives in Kings county, Geo. DODGE and family. -Earl DAGGETT, who was shot by the train robber, McCALL, has been removed from Tulare to his home in Visalia. -T.D. HEISKEL of Tulare is visiting C.W. BICKNELL, who is quite ill at the residence of W.C. DALE, south of town. Mr. BICKNELL is 76 years of age and quite feeble. CHARLEY SPEAR of Visalia was in Hanford on Tuesday. He informed us that his father, the pioneer nurseryman of Tulare County, is very feeble, but somewhat better than when he left here. The firm of Spear & Son have gone out of the nursery business and are disposing of the remainder of their nursery stock. 3. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Tuesday, 12 MAY 1896 *********************************** MARRIAGE -- BENAS-LUBIN -- At Union Square Hall, 421 Post St., San Francisco, on Sunday evening, May 10, 1896, Isaac BENAS of Vallejo to Miss Jennie LUBIN of San Francisco. [The groom is well known here, where he resided several years and he has many friends in Kings county who wish him and his bride a married life of prosperity and happiness.] [from Lemoore column] -- C.H. BAILEY and Miss Hattie MOONEY, 2 of Lemoore's best known and most popular young people, were married Sunday, May 3d, at 2:30 p.m., at the residence of the bride's parents. Under the strains of a wedding march, played by Miss Mamie HATCH, the bridegroom (blushing very becomingly) led the bride to the altar, where the Rev. G.E. SKAGGS tied the nuptial knot that bound 2 souls and made them one. Through the medium of Rev. Mr. SKAGGS, Mr.&Mrs. MOONEY have as a present the beautiful home in which they now reside. After congratulations, and the usual amount of advice as to how to handle a sauce pan with unerring aim, the newly wedded couple led the way to a sumptuous lunch, where the following guests gave sway to appetites and mirth: Rev. SKAGGS Mr.&Mrs. DUNN Mr.&Mrs. HATCH Mrs. METTS Miss Mamie HATCH Misses Belle and Sadie POTTER Miss Georgia HUDSON F.L. POWELL Mr.&Mrs. BAILEY left on the evening train for Los Angeles, where they will spend their honeymoon with Mr. BAILEY's relatives. Quite a number of friends gathered at the depot to wish them "bon voyage." DEATH -- VOLLMER -- In Mojave, Cal., May 4, 1896, Eva May VOLLMER, wife of Geo. D. VOLLMER. [Deceased spent several months in this city last summer. She had been a victim of consumption for a long time but Brights disease was the immediate cause of her death. Many friends here extend to the husband and sister of deceased their heart felt sympathy in their time of bereavement.] [from Lemoore column] -- Mrs. S.A. GILSTRAP, a resident of Coalinga, died at San Francisco on Wednesday, after undergoing an operation. On Tuesday the doctors relieved her of a tumor weighing some 12 or 14 pounds. The doctors in attendance declared it the most extraordinary case of tumor that had came to their notice during their many years of practice. She rallied from the effects of the chloroform administered in the operation, and it looked as though she would recover, but a few hours later she took a sudden turn for the worse and passed away. The remains were brought to Hanford and interred in the Hanford cemetery. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Coroner J.A. MOORE called at the 'Journal' office yesterday to make a statement as to why an inquest had been made on the body of Mr. SELBACH of Lemoore, who died suddenly a few days since of heart disease. He said that some one called him up, from Lemoore, over the telephone, and requested him to hold an inquest over the remains. He asked if there was not a physician there who could make a certificate of death, as he did not want to hold an inquest unless necessary, and the reply was that no physician there could make the certificate, as Mr. SELBACH had no attending physician. Under the circumstances, he (Dr. MOORE) thought it necessary to hold an inquest and did so. He had in 2 other cases recently, when called to hold an inquest, refused to do so, as he did not believe it necessary, he states. ------------------------------------------------------- ANOTHER MURDER -- Committed by a Former Chinese Vegetable Peddler of Hanford -- HAW YUE, a Chinaman, was shot through the body, in Chinatown, at Visalia, between 8 & 9 o'clock last Friday night. The bullet entered below the ribs and came out at the back. The shooting took place in the heart of Chinatown and it created quite a furor. HAW YUE was leaving the joss house, where he worked, and was walking west when he met several Chinamen near the front of QUONG CHONG's store. As he was passing them, one in the crowd, CHUN JOHN, gave John WAH, the murderer, a pistol. The latter turned quickly and shot YUE at once, then began to run. He was halted a moment by George TIBBETTS, who threw him down. Several Chinamen then caught hold of TIBBETTS and threw him down and John WAH escaped. WAH was arrested, however, on Sunday, by Constable BRODER, who found WAH lying in a barn, at a Chinese vegetable garden near Visalia. When the Constable drove up WAH jumped up and started to run. This made the officer suspect him and drawing his revolver he placed the fleeing Chinese under arrest. When brought to town he was brought into the presence of YUE, who identified him at once as the man who shot him. The prisoner gave his name as Sam CHOY, and he was the complaining witness against several Chinamen in Justice Buckman's court a few days ago, and who failed to show up when the cases were called for trial. CHUN JOHN employed Bradley & Farnsworth to represent him and an effort was made to get him out on bonds. HAW YUE, the wounded Chinaman, was thought to be dying Sunday afternoon and his dying statement was obtained to be used in the trial of his murderer. Power & Alford will be employed to prosecute the case. The name of the murderer is given by the Visalia 'Times' as CHUN JOKE. Landlord TURNER of the Hotel Artesia, this city, says the man who did the killing conducted a vegetable garden near Hanford for several years and went by the name of John WAH. The Chinaman was industrious and peaceable here and Mr. TURNER expressed surprise when he received word yesterday that WAH was in the Visalia jail, accused of murder and wanted to see him. Mr. TURNER drove over to Visalia to see what was wanted of him. He says the shooting was the result of a row between 2 Chinese companies. The shooting is said to have been wholly unprovoked. John WAH, it is said, had been owing money for some time to the man who was shot. The 2 men had quarreled over the debt and the shooting was the result. ------------------------------------------------------ LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Mrs. S.M. JOINER is quite ill with la grippe. -H.A. BURKE of Traver was arrested a few days since charged with cruelty to animals. -Rumor has it that Harry PRICE, the laundryman, recently of this city, was married a few days ago in Los Angeles. -Mrs. Porter MICKLE went to Centerville, Alameda county, to visit the family of Ben MICKLE. -George WELBORN and W.A. WHITE have purchased from W.T. WELBORN Sr. the latter's blacksmith shop, across the street from the water works. They are energetic young men and good mechanics and will no doubt keep the work moving in good shape. W.E. HENDRICKS met with a painful accident Sunday afternoon while riding his wheel. He was riding at a high rate of speed when, in front of Dr. MOORE's residence, the wheel struck a rut and threw him to the ground. He was knocked senseless and remained unconscious for about 20 minutes. His shoulder was dislocated and he was considerably bruised on other parts of his body. Mr. HENDRICKS will give his bicycle a rest for a few days. PORTER MICKLE, the pioneer butcher, is again in business. He is now the proprietor of the People's market, and he, assisted by his brother, J.T. MICKLE, will conduct the same. The market has a reputation for serving choice meat on the block and this reputation will, no doubt, be well sustained. ------------------------------------------------------- GRANGEVILLE -- -Mrs. C. RAILSBACK's mother, Mrs. RAYNARD, has left her former home in Petaluma and has taken up her residence with her youngest daughter, Mrs. WRIGHT of Hanford. -Last Monday Caleb RAILSBACK was stricken with paralysis and sustained 2 more strokes during the week, which have left him nearly helpless. The sincere sympathy of all his friends is extended to him. -Mr. J.E. TILTON was here on business Saturday. He expects his son Frank home in a few days. -Mrs. Marion ROBINSON is somewhat better and hopes soon to be around again. -Mr.&Mrs. LEVINS and Mrs. Ed GEROW left for LaFayette to attend the funeral of their sister, Mrs. CROW, who died Monday. LEMOORE LOCALS -- [Lemoore 'Leader' of May 9th] -Simon MOONEY has secured employment in the lumber mills at Sanger and is now a resident of that town. -The funeral of Augustus SELBACH took place on Saturday last, and a large concourse of relatives and friends escorted the remains to their last resting place in Lemoore cemetery. -E.W. SELBACH and wife of Wilmington, Los Angeles county, arrived in Lemoore on Saturday last to attend the funeral of his father, Augustus SELBACH. They returned to Wilmington on Monday evening. Mr. SELBACH has taken charge of the butcher business formerly conducted by his father, and as soon as he can settle up his affairs at Wilmington will return to Lemoore and make our town his permanent home. -Mr. Thomas FINUCAN and wife returned from their trip to San Francisco on Monday of this week and will make Lemoore their future home. -On Friday last, in Judge Hebbard's court, San Francisco, Bert GOLDSMITH was granted a divorce from his wife, Emily. -John A. WILMOTT, late nightwatchman at this place, on Saturday last purchased a ticket in Hanford for his old home in Kentucky, and left on the evening train. -On Tuesday morning what might have proven a fatal accident was narrowly averted. Earl AMMERMAN attempted to remove a cap from a loaded shotgun shell with a cap extractor, when it exploded, resulting in Earl having his left hand badly lacerated and his right hand badly burned. The shell burst in 2, one fragment passing through Earl's hand and the other through the arm of his brother, Clay, who happened to be standing by a window in a room leading to the porch. Earl had no idea that the shell would explode, as the cap had been snapped in the gun some time previous and failed to explode the shell. He was holding the shell against his stomach at the time of the explosion. A hole was burned through his shirt and it was otherwise badly torn. Drs. FOLEY and MOORE were summoned and cared for the wounded members. Earl and Clay are both compelled to carry their arms in a sling. Earl says he has had all the experience he cares for in the upcapping of loaded shells to the end that they thems elves may not be decapped in the operation. There was a post made before 12 April, maybe even a month previous to that date, where a member posted some records of Sacramento directories? cemeteries? and in that post it had a record pertaining to names in a suburb of Sac, maybe Woodland,in the late 1880's. I finally located my Benjiman Carl Fuller there, but..................my comp died and I lost it. How can I search for it in the archives? Any help would be very appreciated. Donna. 1

    2. Flavia, >From "A Guide to using the SSDI" on RW: "As marvelous a finding aid as it is, the SSDI does not include the names of everyone, even if they had a Social Security number (SNN). If relatives or the funeral home did not report the death to the Social Security Administration, or if the individual died before 1962 (when the records were computerized) then they probably will not appear in this database." http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rwguide/lesson10.htm The SS# was most likely issued to him. 3. Thank you....I'll have to explore this. Now I have another question - I have a SS# on a death certificate....the person was born 1880 and died 1946 - he does not appear in SSDI - is there a way to find who the # was issued to - probably not considering all our privacy and protections - just curious if anyone had tried. 1. [NORCAL] Hanford, Kings Co., CA - 5 May 1896
    2. Dee Sardoc
    3. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Tuesday, 5 MAY 1896 *********************************** MARRIAGE -- BAILEY-MOONEY -- In Lemoore, Cal., Sunday, May 3, 1896, Charles BAILEY and Miss Hattie MOONEY, both of Lemoore. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Mr. O.C. BROWN, who has been on an extended visit to the East, returned on Wednesday of this week, bringing with him a life partner. While at Evansville, Ind., he married Mrs. India MEZICK, the marriage ceremony being performed at that place. They will take up their residence on Mr. BROWN's home place east of town. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Mrs. WHITE, the aged mother of Rev. James H. WHITE, recently deceased, died Friday morning after an illness of several months. She has been failing ever since the death of her son. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- On Thursday afternoon of this week Augustus SELBACH, an old pioneer and one of the oldest and respected citizens of Lemoore, passed away suddenly at his residence. Though Mr. SELBACH had been ailing for a number of years, his sudden death was a surprise to all. He gave no signs of a turn for the worse on the day of his death, appearing to be in unusually good spirit on that day. He ate a hearty dinner and shortly afterward seated himself at the table, and, procuring a book in which he was deeply interested, read aloud to his family and seemed in the best of spirits. After reading and joking with his family with his family for a short time, he complained of feeling faint, and attempted to reach his bedroom, but ere he reached the door he fell to the floor, and in a few minutes thereafter life was extinct. Drs. MOORE and FOLEY were summoned and did all in their power to save him, but of no avail. An inquest was held and it was decided that the cause of death was heart failure. ------------------------------------------------------ BLEW UP THE HEADGATES -- Lemoore 'Leader,' May 2d -- John ELY was in town today and as he tells the story of Tuesday's events, 10 or a dozen men from the Tipton country came over and demanded a run of water. An effort was made to parley with them, but they were not in the mood for talk. They said they had seen the Tule River directors last year, but it had done no good. They had said they would be satisfied with a 10 days' run, but had been allowed none. This time they were after water. The headgate at the RUMSEY place was chopped out in short order and then a forward movement was made to the headgate at Rocky Ford. This was guarded by George ROTH, W.R. HARRIS and others. The invaders announced their intention to blow out the headgate. There was a heated argument out of which grew a scrap or 2, but no harm to persons was done. When the visitors were found to be in earnest Mr. HARRIS stood upon the headgate and invited the opposing force to blow it out. This lulled matters for awhile, but when Mr. HARRIS was out of the way, having gone to dinner, 5 sticks of dynamite were placed under the works and touched off. Spectators say mud and water spurted 150 feet high. A hole was torn in the ground like a cellar to a brick block, and the headgate was a total wreck. No further damage was done, as this was evidently considered sufficient. -------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Jack FRIANT left this morning for Truckee, where he expects to remain for the summer, at least. -Arthur and George SHARPLES, brothers of Frank SHARPLES, left Hanford last Saturday for their old home in England. They anticipate remaining there permanently. -J.M. ROBERTSON and brother, Andy, left Hanford yesterday to prospect for gold and also to look out for a place for Mrs. J.M. ROBERTSON, who is in poor health, to spend the summer. -S.L. LANDIS, the butcher, is nearly laid up with a very sore hand and a boil on his neck. He has great sympathy now for the fellow who has la grippe, although he thinks he himself is a little the worst afflicted. -Berch McQUIDDY, of this city, has secured a position on the 'T.C. Walker,' a boat which plies between San Francisco and Stockton. His father, John T. McQUIDDY, who has just returned from Stockton, secured the position for him while he was down there. -A party of 4, consisting of J.L. & E.L. CHADDOCK, W.S. HEYWOOD & W.G. FOOTE, left Hanford today by team for the oil regions of the West Side. This is their 2nd trip. ROCKEFELLER will no doubt have to surrender his title of "oil king" when they return. DEPUTY SHERIFF F.J. WALKER accompanied Mrs. WALKER to the insane asylum at Agnews, Sunday, where she will be placed under medical care and treatment. Mrs. WALKER was under treatment at Livermore for about 18 months for mental troubles and returned to Hanford about a month ago. Her trouble has come back and it was found necessary to take her away again. She goes to Agnews on a commitment from Judge JACOBS and on the recommendation of examining physicians. Mr.&Mrs. WALKER have many friends in this and Tulare County and all will sympathize with them in the unfortunate illness of Mrs. WALKER. AN ACCIDENT, which might have resulted in loss of life, but luckily did not, occurred last Sunday at the home of Samuel REY, at Willow Grove. There are a number of very large cottonwood trees on the place. A long limb of one of these trees, becoming overweighted with foliage, broke off and fell to the ground. Mr. REY's children and those of neighbors, about a dozen in all, were playing beneath the tree at the time, but they heard the cracking of the limb and got out from under it just in time. The crash of the falling limb, which, at its largest place, was about a foot in diameter, was heard a long distance from the house. The parents of the children are congratulating themselves on the narrow escape of their offspring. H.J. LIGHT is in Hanford today. He has been attending his wife, who is ill at Lemoore. He will go over to his place at Dudley again for a few days soon. He says it is dangerous to light a match over in the Dudley neighborhood now, the oil is so near the surface. Tom HANNAH, Surveyor Seth SMITH and others have located from 25 to 30 oil claims in the gap leading from Kettleman plains to Sunflower Valley. The locators are making arrangements to have a well bored. UP TO WEDNESDAY of this week Mr. Thomas BARRETT, wife and children lived happily in their home just across the track from the depot. This happiness came to an end on that evening, when, it is said, Mr. BARRETT (who is employed by the railroad company) returned home late that evening and discovered that all was not as it should be at his home, and that the sacredness of his fireside had been invaded and his home destroyed, and that, too, by a man named John A. WILMOTT, who has been employed here for several moths past as night watchman -- a man whom BARRETT had befriended and assisted in a financial way during the past few months. The public in general were very sorry to learn of this sad wrecking of a family, as Mr. BARRETT and his wife both bore good reputations, and many are the expressions of hatred toward this man who returned evil for good to his friend and benefactor; and many are the expressions that a liberal allowance of tar and feathers should be meted out to him if he d oes not leave the town, as his absence is more desirable than his presence. ------------------------------------------------------ LEMOORE LOCALS -- [Lemoore 'Leader' of May 2d] -Johnny WALKER of Visalia is now in the employ of Charles BAILEY, our local harness dealer. -Mrs. Lou ROGERS of Indianola, Iowa, is visiting her nieces, Mrs. DOCKER and Mrs. WILSON. She had her son Fred expect to make their home in California. -John MILLS and Bud BARKER are prospecting on upper Kings river. Mr. BARKER will take his family with him and put in the summer months opening up his mine. -John HAYES, who sometime since drove a large number of cattle to the vicinity of the lake to pasture on wild grass, has returned them to Stringtown and placed them on the farm of John and Went MILLS. -Will WINGER recently purchased 10 acres of land from W. UNDERWOOD near the Stringtown school house and has built a cottage thereon and will take up his permanent residence on the land. GRANGEVILLE -- -Mr. James ROSS of Greenup County, Kentucky, arrived here last Tuesday and is the guest for a few days of friends in Grangeville, but expects to locate permanently in Fresno, where he has 2 brothers. -Mr.&Mrs. D.M. THORNE spent May-day visiting D.C. HAYWARDS and also attended the closing exercises of the Excelsior school. Mrs. Harry BERNSTEIN, who is the teacher, was justly proud of the good showing made by her scholars. -George BARTLETT was the lucky man that drew the number that won for him the bicycle that was given away by B. Schwartz & Company on the last day of April. He is proud of his prize, and justly so, for 'tis a fine wheel. -Scott SAMPSON has enclosed his house and front yard with a neat wire fence, it being absolutely necessary to keep his little daughter (who has lately learned to run) from going into the public road, it being extremely dangerous on account of much traffic to and fro. -Quite a number of the friends and neighbors of Mr.&Mrs. WILKINSON called in Thursday evening to remind them that they had been married 25 years, it consequently being their silver wedding. A very pleasant time was had celebrating the event. Several pretty presents were received by the couple, and at 11 o'clock all sat down to a sumptuous supper, after which games were indulged in until after midnight, when the guests departed, wishing their host and hostess many happy returns of the day. -Will ALEXANDER and Mr. STACEY were busy Friday stretching telephone wires from Grangeville to the head of the Last Chance ditch. Quite an improvement. ARMONA ITEMS -- -E. CALLOWAY, a brother of Mrs. John WORSWICK, arrived Saturday morning from the State University, where he has been in attendance since last September. -M.A. HARDING is confined to his room with a gathering in his head. -John CATLIN of Exeter and his son, Arty, arrived at Henry JENKINSON's Monday, to visit his father, sisters and old friends for a few days. -Mrs. Bert VINCENT is quite poorly with heart trouble. FRAZER & DALLAS -- -Mr.&Mrs. A.H. MOFFETT of Visalia returned home Monday morning, after a few days' visit with Mr. MOFFETT's parents, Mr.&Mrs. H. MOFFETT, of Frazer. -Misses Lillie and Rebecca McCORD, who have been visiting with their brothers, Jim & John McCORD, for the past 9 months, will return East the latter part of this month. The Misses GORDON will accompany them. Transcribed by Dee Sardoch To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/
