    3. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Friday, 29 MAY 1896 *********************************** BIRTH -- HAMBLETON -- Near Hanford, to the wife of J.M. HAMBLETON, May 18, 1896, a son. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- The funeral of W.E. BEESON took place in Los Angeles last Sunday, having been postponed from Saturday. --------------------------------------------------- F.H. JEWETT is now aged 83 years. He was in Hanford yesterday for the 1st time in some 4 months. He is an argumentative Populist. He has little to do now except read and he is well posted on political affairs. He is down on McKinley, who is, he says, a straddler. He says the outlook is for the Democrats to adopt a free silver platform at Chicago, and if they place a good free silver man thereon, such as Senator Sibley of Pennsylvania, and will put in the platform a plank endorsing the initiative and referendum, not only the silver party, but the People's party, will endorse him and victory will perch upon the Democratic banner in November. His son Gus strikes some hard nuts to crack when he tackles the old man on political history, as father and son are almost directly opposite on all political propositions. -------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -C.L. PRITCHARD and family will leave soon for Paicines, San Benito County. -Mrs. F.M. GOODRICH is suffering considerably from an abscess in one of her hands. -Robert DOZIER and Jeff HAMES, 2 old miners, will leave Hanford next week for Tuolumne county, on a prospecting trip. -Casper HINKLE and family started for Stockton Wednesday morning, going by team. There was no improvement in his condition up to yesterday, but Dr. BOND still has hopes of Mr. GRAY's recovery. -C.W. CHITTENDEN is in Hanford today. He recently returned from the Southern part of the State, where he has been engaged in orange packing. -George BARTLETT, the contractor, scraped one of his hands on a piece of wire last Tuesday. A fly probably poisoned the sore place, as soon after he was scratched his arm began to swell and he has since been having a serious time with it. -Alberto MARQUIS gave $2000 bail yesterday and was released from jail. He is charged with having stabbed Manuel ROSA on Sunday last. ROSA is progressing toward recovery. -Mrs. Vera KIMBLE is now in Hanford visiting her parents, Mr.&Mrs. G.B. McCORD. She recently graduated, at the head of her class, from Snell's seminary in Oakland. She is an excellent elocutionist and will recite "Sheridan's Ride" at the Opera House on Memorial day. -George POTTER, of Stringtown, was taken dangerously sick last Friday with erysipelas of the jaw. While mowing he felt a rising or lump on his face, which began to swell and soon his features were terribly bloated. He is now recovering. ------------------------------------------------------ TRAVER TIDINGS -- [from the Traver 'Advocate' of May 28th] -Eustace KING, who makes his home with his uncle, R.J. KING, has gone to Kernville for a 2 months visit with his father. ------------------------------------------------------ JAMES DUNHAM stole into the house of his father-in-law, R.P. McGLINCHY, near San Jose, last Wednesday night and killed his wife, his father-in-law, his mother-in-law and brother-in-law, also a hired man and hired woman. He used an axe, 2 revolvers and a rifle to do the deadly work. The fiend is still at large. Transcribed by Dee Sardoch To see more old newspapers, visit http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/

Finally de ROSA jumped from his cart and the men clinched and fell. During the fracas de ROSA was stabbed in the left side with a pocket knife in the hands of MARAKS. He ran to the house, where friends extinguished the fire with water. Ditchtender BOWHAY put a force to work and soon filled it in, but during the night the water worked through again and flooded a large area of land on the BRAVERMAN place on which Robert NULL lives. The old man was compelled to get out in the middle of the night and work in water to his knees in order to save his bees. Several stands were lost, however. Mr. BOWHAY experienced considerable trouble in securing men to assist, owing to the uncertainty of being paid for their work. They have been visiting there for the past few days with relatives and while there attended a happy family reunion at the residence of Mrs. Servilla A. BUCKMAN, 8 miles east of Visalia. It was the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Mrs. BUCKMAN's birth, and all her children, grand children and great grand children joined in making it one of the most pleasant days of her life. Mrs. BUCKMAN's 8 children were all there. They are as follows: Mrs. Josephine TEAGUE of Lemoore Mrs. Maggie HARLOW of Hanford C.T. BUCKMAN of Visalia Mrs. Susan TEAGUE, Mrs. Sarah HINDS, A.J. BUCKMAN, J.E. BUCKMAN & E.J. BUCKMAN of Exeter. The eldest of these is 52 years, the youngest is 29. Their children make 32 grandchildren in the family. There are also 7 great grandchildren. The relatives assembled at Mrs. BUCKMAN's residence Sunday morning, without giving her notice of their coming. They found the lady in the yard, dressed in a calico wrapper, feeding her chickens. They soon made things lively there and of course the worthy lady was supremely happy to have her family together once more. The visitors had each brought food and a table was spread in the yard to which 50 persons sat down. There were 8 grandchildren absent. This was the 1st reunion of the family in 11 years. No death in this large family has yet occurred, except that of the father. They all live in Tulare and Kings counties. ------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Last Saturday in the Superior Court of Tulare County, the divorce suit of Justin JACOBS vs. Anna JACOBS was dismissed, on motion of plaintiff. -S.J. WHITE, of Armona, swore to a complaint yesterday, charging H. VINCENT and son with battery and disturbing the peace. The trouble arose over ditch water. -The little daughter of Mr.&Mrs. J.J. Shaw ROBINSON of Hanford is now in New York. He attended the sale of Haggin's horses there last week and purchased several fine horses to be shipped to England. One of them is a chestnut colt by Islington, dam Louise, for which he paid $1400. -A pretty sight on the streets of Hanford last Saturday were the 2 children of Earnest RAWLINS, mounted on a pair of Iceland ponies, and the little pony colt, not much larger than a small dog, ambling along in the rear. -A nephew of Mr. SHELLABARGER arrived in Hanford this morning from the East. -R. TUNZE and wife of this city will at once go to Tulare, where mr. TUNZE has secured a position. -The Cross Creek school closed last Friday night with a lengthy literary and musical program, after quite a successful term taught by C.A. McCOURT and Miss Perne SCOTT. -Mrs. DAVIDSON, who has been visiting her son John at Wyuma, this State, arrived home this morning. -Miss EGAN, a cousin of Mrs. Harry BERNSTEIN, arrived in Hanford last evening from San Francisco, on a visit. -Robert A. ELLIS, formerly of Armona, writes us from San Francisco that he is going to Fremont, Washington, and desires his 'Journal' sent up there. ANOTHER TEAM has been driven away from Hanford and afterwards recovered. This time it is Manuel LUCIO who was the sufferer. He left a double team hitched on Front St. last Sunday night. Some one drove it to Goshen and there left it. A. VANCE, the Hanford liveryman, saw the horses accidentally and returned them to their owner. ------------------------------------------------------ GRANGEVILLE -- -Mrs. KNOWLTON left last Wednesday for Bakersfield, where she has gone to spend a short vacation with her daughter, Mrs. HUSHAW, who has charge of a mission there. -Mrs. MYERS, who for nearly a year has been away from home taking care of Mrs. MONTEAGLE of Fresno, who is somewhat of an invalid, returned Saturday evening. Her friends are very glad to see her back again. EUCALYPTUS -- -Peter BONDSON is improving, but not yet out of danger. LEMOORE LOCALS -- [Lemoore 'Leader' May 16th] -Thomas HARVEY, or "Coal Oil Tommy," as he is familiarly called, has gone to Kingston and will take up his residence there. -The parents of Bert JENNINGS left Iowa some time since for Lemoore.
