Hi Jim, I don't have the ending to the Achoon - Shoon-Foke saga, but I will look for it next trip to the Library. I am quite certain that the steamers stopped in San Francisco. There would have been river barges to bring passengers on up to Sacramento. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Tuesday, 9 JUNE 1896 *************************** BIRTH -- HOUSTON -- Near Hanford, June 8, 1896, to the wife of G.W. HOUSTON, a daughter. MARRIAGE -- WALDORF-CRAWFORD -- In Hanford, at the M.E. Church parsonage, Sunday, June 7, 1896, by Rev. Miller; Oliver WALDORFF [spelled 2 ways] and Maria E. CRAWFORD. MARRIAGE -- GRAY-GEARING -- At Hanford, June 8, 1896, by G.W. Randall, J.P.; Clarence A. GRAY and Nellie M. GEARING. [from Lemoore column, from Lemoore 'Leader' of 6 June] -- For the 3rd time within a month and a half the 'Leader' is favored with the pleasure of announcing the marriage of some of Lemoore's most prominent young people. This time it is the marriage of Mr. Charles S. HUGGINS and Miss Jessie J. CARR. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. W.M. ARMSTRONG, and the happy event was duly celebrated by the serving of an excellent supper to the relatives and friends of the bride and groom who had assembled. Both bride and groom are well and favorably known in our community. Mr. HUGGINS came to our town several months ago and opened a shaving parlor, since which time he has made many friends, and the bride is equally well and favorably known. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Mrs. J.D. BIDDLE and Mr. S.L. LANDIS last Saturday morning received a telegram containing the sad news of the death of their father, Major A.L. LANDIS, at Nashville, Tenn. They had not seen him for several years and the news was a great shock to them. Major LANDIS was a quite prominent man in his state. [from Local Paragraphs column] -- Application has been made in the Superior Court of Stanislaus county, by Robert F. COVERT, for letters of administration upon the estate of the late Bernard DOHERTY of Salida, who died in Hanford in April. The estate consists of 320 acres of land in T3S, R7E, of an estimated value of $5000. Deceased died intestate. His legal heirs are his brothers and sisters -- Robert, William, George and Miss Fannie DOHERTY of Hanford, Mrs. Anna GARNER of Coalinga, Fresno county, and Miss May DOHERTY of Salida. Application is set for hearing June 13th at 10 o'clock a.m. ------------------------------------------------------ NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC -- To whom it may concern, notice is hereby given that I have purchased the photograph gallery recently conducted by E.R. HEALY, but that I am not responsible for any bills contracted by him. L.M. POWELL -------------------------------------------------------- TRIPLE MURDER at FRESNO -- Fresno's long season of immunity from murder was broken last Saturday by the discovery of 3 dead bodies in a vineyard near that city. On that day an Armenian working on the estate of Dr. MEUX discovered the dead body of a man among the vines he was cultivating. Further search resulted in the discovery of 2 more bodies. They were identified as the bodies of Stephen SHAHAMARIAN, his son and daughter. All were shot through the head and indications were that they had been killed about dusk the evening before they were found. Several theories have been advanced as to the probable cause for the crime, but the most generally accepted one is that it was the work of parents of little girls in the neighborhood whom young SHAHAMARIAN had assaulted. A nephew of the old man was arrested but he so far explained all suspicious circumstances that he was released Saturday evening. His motive was supposed to be the attainment of the old man's property, but there are still 2 persons between him and the inheritance. The murder occurred in a neighborhood made up almost entirely of Russians and Armenians and numerous threats had been made by the Russians, who found that the law would not reach the case, to deal severely with the young man who was killed. ------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Mrs. Felix MOORE and daughter Martha left for Sacramento yesterday evening. -Mrs. John FOYE, of Fresno (mother of Mrs. Dr. DUNCAN) who has been spending a few days in Hanford, left for Fresno today. -Joseph ROGERS and his son Claude leave tomorrow for a prospecting trip over into Nevada. -John BARGION is in Hanford this week from Tucson, Arizona, spending a short vacation. He is still holding down the excellent position he secured as engine inspector for the S.P. Co. in the machine shops at Tucson. -Mrs. BRAILSFORD, who is at Catalina Islands, is improving somewhat in health. F. WORMSTECKER has returned to the Queen Wilhelmina colony, after spending 3 years in Holland. Like many others, he could not be content in the old country after having resided in California. He expects to purchase land in Kings county now and remain here permanently. ------------------------------------------------------- GRANGEVILLE -- -Mrs. J.S. SULLIVAN is much better and able to sit up. -Lou CROW, a former resident here, came up from Los Angeles Tuesday to visit the oil wells at Coalinga. He represents one of the largest firms in that city It may be of interest to some to hear that Dr. BUTLER (who is a brother-in-law of Mr. CROW) is practicing medicine in Oakland, where he resides with his family. LEMOORE LOCALS -- [Lemoore 'Leader' June 6th] -Ed VAIL, son of Frank VAIL, the painter, returned from Coulterville last Saturday night where he has resided the past 9 months. -Mrs. S.P. CARR left the fore part of the week for St. Helena, Cal., accompanied by her son Torry. Miss Mary CARR left for the same place a few days previous. She acted as maid of honor at the marriage of her aunt, Miss Carolin Louise CARR, to Mr. Orlo EASTWOOD of Oakland, which event took place on Wednesday of this week. Rev. S.P. CARR performed the marriage ceremony which united the couple in the bonds of matrimony. She returned home the latter part of the week, but Miss Mary and Master Torry will prolong their stay to a couple of weeks, in order to visit in St. Helena and Oakland. -Mrs. John BENTON, Mrs. John ANDERSON and a little girl residing with Mrs. BENTON attended the funeral of Mr. GRAY at Grangeville on Wednesday. On the return trip, when they reached the railroad crossing in front of Capt. YOUNG's residence, the horse they were driving became frightened when on the up-grade leading to the track, turned and upset the cart, throwing the occupants to the ground. Mrs. ANDERSON was thrown with such force upon Mrs. BENTON as to cause a fracture of 3 of her ribs. Mrs. ANDERSON and the little girl were more fortunate than Mrs. BENTON, but both were badly bruised about the body. They were taken to their homes, medical aid was summoned, and at last reports are getting along fairly well. Hi Betty, Was the report on the Steamship Panama copied from San Francisco or did it actually steam upriver to Sacto? I can't imagine how bad steerage was on that ship. The Daily Union Sacramento, Cal. Friday, September 24, 1852 PANAMA ITEMS - The steamer Brother Jonathan arrived at Panama on the 3d inst., having made the run from Valparaiso to that port in twelve days. The roads on the Isthmus are represented to be in a very bad condition. Showers are very frequent. There is but little sickness on the Isthmus. The steamer Illinois brought 350 passengers, most of whom will come up on the Golden Gate and Winfield Scott. The Panama Echo of the 3d inst. states that the Vice President of the Panama Railroad Company, and the chief Engineer, came out from New York on the Illinois - that they will soon be in Panama - that there have been eight miles more of the road put under contract - that said eight miles are at this end of the road - that all that is necessary to import from the United States (they expect) will be here in a few days, and, that the execution of the contract will be very shortly commenced. Recorderís Court - Before Judge McGREW. SEPTEMBER 23, 1852 Assault and Battery - ACHOON in this case was the defendant, Choon- Foke plaintiff. The left visual organ of the latter in deep mourning, evinced that a game of gouge, thrust or tumble had been enacted. ACHOON averred that he was innocent of the charge, "He never fight no man. He give SHOON-FOKE push, who fall himself. He want CHOON-FOKE leave, he no leave, he fall." Choon-Fokeís testimony was directly the opposite of this, so that the Recorder suspended judgment till this morning, that he might inform himself better of the facts, through the medium of some Chinaman better acquainted with the English language. Julia MASON, alias Biddy, vs. Mrs. OíLEARY, for assault and battery. A large bruise on the right cheek and a cluster of small scabs under the nose, imparted to Biddyís countenance no very agreeable complexion, and showed very plainly that she was more or less of a termagant pugilist. A swinging motion of the right hand when she address the court - an affecting application of the same member to her heart, with an occasional long drawn sigh and gesticulation of the cross, were convincing proofs of her high regard for piety and whisky. "Broke your glass, Mrs. O'LEARY! Me broke your glass! Na, na, na. I broke no glass. The Lord forgive her for that." A gush of tenderness had nearly overpowered the sensitive heart of the amiable plaintiff, whos dreamy gaze fixed itself upon the floor, while she rocked her body backwards and forwards in an agony of grief. An obliviousness of memory incapacitated her from answering the inquiry as to whether she had not been drunk or drinking when she went to Mrs. OíLearyís house. She "did not know - she was then, just as she is now." The conclusion from the reply was easy and satisfactory. Biddy was ordered from the court. Her own testimony proved her the aggressor upon an innocent woman. Before reaching the door of egress, she turned a look of withering scorn upon the executors of justice, and was about to accompany it with a volley, when the repeated order in a louder key, caused her to change her determination and hasten from their hated presence. Several other unimportant cases were disposed of. MARRIED On Tuesday, September 21st, in St. Patrickís Church, San Francisco, by Rev. J. McGINNIS, Mrs. John P. BUCKLEY to Miss C.A. M. CAHERTY, all of that city. DIED In this city, September 23d, Charles A., oldest son of Chas H. and Mary A. CUMMINGS, aged 4 years, 8 months and 22 days. Friends of the parents are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from their residence on O street, this day (Friday) at 3 oíclock. At the residence of Mr. McCAMLY, on the Sacramento ricer, eight miles below this city, on the 19th September, Hiram BURNHAM of Detroit, Mich, aged 54 years. The Daily Union Sacramento, Cal. Tuesday morning, September 21, 1852 BENICIA FEMALE SEMINARY - A preventive influence at home to parents desirous of emigrating with their families to California, has been the want of proper female academies of learning. This objection no longer applies. A female seminary is now in successful operation as above designated, under the management of a Board of Visitors and Board of Trustees, composed of the first gentlemen of the State, and conducted by teachers whose abilities have been well tested, and who are known to be the proper guardians of female morals and manners. This institution should be encouraged. Its branches of learning are numerous, and its course thorough. Address Miss Susan A. LORD, Principal, Benicia. THE EDITOR of the California Express reads a lecture full of bitter denunciation, to a brutal class of citizens of Marysville, who have lately been in the habit of tying tin kettles and bunches of crackers to the dogsí tails, and starting them off through the public streets. From this cause, it says, at least two fires have originated. The scoundrels deserve to be lashed to the horns of a wild bull that they might experience a portion of that misery which they inflict upon one of the most faithful of dumb creatures. EDITORIAL VISITORS - Messrs. LULL, of the San Francisco Whig, and SMITH, of the Marysville Herald, gave a passing visit to our office yesterday morning, both of whom we were glad to find in the enjoyment of vigorous health. The former of these gentlemen is on his return from a visit to the mining regions, and brings cheering news of the political prospect in almost every place that he has been. The Whig miners are now wider awake than many who has double the chances for procuring political intelligence. We are glad of this. The wind set in from the right quarter. The Sonora Herald of the 18th inst., contains the following items: SEVERE ACCIDENT - On Tuesday morning last, William BEDDOES, a young man working in the blacksmith shop of BALL and WARDEN, was engaged in grinding a large shingle knife, when, by some mishap, it caught on the stone; and the edge of the knife striking against his left wrist, completely severed the (rest of line missing). The hemorrhage was so profuse as to place the young manís life in extreme danger. Drs. BRUNER and GUNN, however, were soon in attendance, and succeeded in stopping the blood. The patient is now in a fair way to do well. STILL WORSE - On Wednesday morning a similar accident happened to a man of the name of W. MARTIN, while engaged in the erection of Mayor DODGEís adobe building, the staging upon which he was standing happened to give way, when he caught hold of the adjoining building to save himself, striking his bare arm violently against a tin water- gutter, which cut through the whole lower part of the arm, about half- way between the wrist and elbow. Dr. BONNER and GUNN dressed the wound successfully. It is a very severe injury, however, and it will be some days before the sufferer can be pronounced out of danger. Married In this city, September 12th, by Rev. J.A. BENTON, Mr. Jacob MILLER to Miss Elizabeth KEARTH, all of Sacramento county. At Daylorís Rancho, on the 16th September, by Rev. J.A. BENTON, Mr. J.R.T. MAHONE to Mrs. K.R. SHELDON, of the Cosumnes Valley. At Napa, on Thursday evening, September 9th, by the Rev. Mr. LOCHLEY, George W. COLTEN, of Wisconsin, to Miss Mary Jane PURCELL, of Napa City. DIED In Placer county, September 15th, Admiral I. BURCH, formerly of Erie county, Pa., in the 24th year of his age. In this city, on the 20th September, William KAMP, of Baltimore. FROM THE PLAINS - the following persons have arrived at Placerville during the last week, from the Plains: G.W. Marilyn, Thank you. I have been searching more throughout the directories and I believe (h) is head of house, (b) is boarder and (r) means they reside there. So in the case of Speicher, Lawrence, the father, was head, Raymond, his son, was a boarder. Thank you. Betty
It could be that he boards with Lawrence ________________________________ From: "scrapsbratt@aol.com" <scrapsbratt@aol.com> To: norcal@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, May 18, 2010 7:02:13 PM Subject: [NORCAL] 1910 Sac I have the 1910 Sac City Directory that I will be scanning and adding to Nancy's site. Hi All, I have just uploaded new files for the following databases to my web site. This update contains burials which were not listed before. We have been finding a lot of new burials listed in the newspapers and not anywhere else. If you have not found your ancestors before, check the listings again. Any listing which has only an O in the source column came from a newspaper death notice. If you check the vital records newspaper index you should find a listing for the paper the burial came from. This up date will complete the pre 1900 newspapers in Mendocino county except the Willits News (which is being worked on now) and the Fort Bragg Advocate (which is available in book form). Keep checking back. I have a stack of over a hundred pages I still have to go through to extract the burial information, so I will be updating these indexes in the future. Also, does anyone have any tidbits regarding the "Grand Theater"? My gUncle Frank Eugene was a flyman there. Betty
