It was the 15th anniversary of the wedding of Mr.&Mrs. Charles G. COVERT of Armona. Invitations had been sent out to a large number of friends and over a hundred persons were present. Then, after reviewing the past in well chosen words, he had them join their right hands, said the marriage ceremony and had them renew their marriage vows. With good wishes and many happy returns of the anniversary he then turned them over to Mr. John WORSWICK, who spoke the congratulations and good wishes of the audience, wishing that they might live long enough to enjoy their China wedding, their silver wedding, and on through the catalogue. A song, entitled "Rainbow in the Clouds," was then sung by Misses Donnie BARR, Merriam WORSWICK and Inez COVERT. Henry ROBINSON played and sand "Are Our Hearts Growing Old," after which followed the ice cream and cake. DICE and his wife, who is a sister to Mrs. SMITH, went to SMITH's place to remove a small dirt dam to get some water with which to irrigate a small patch of alfalfa. Mrs. DICE got out of the buggy and began removing the dam when SMITH came out of the house and told her to let it alone. She did not quit, however, and SMITH took hold of her to push her away. A scuffle ensued, during which DICE claims a pistol was discharged, upon which he took his shotgun which he had in the buggy and killed SMITH. There had been a dispute for some time about the use of the water, DICE having permission from several neighbors to run the water while SMITH refused to let him have it. At the inquest it developed that the shot heard by DICE, and which caused him to shoot, proved to have been a rifle which had been set with a string to the trigger for the purpose of awakening SMITH if anybody should interfere with the dam in the night. In some manner during the scuffle the string was touched and the gun discharged. DICE thought that SMITH had shot at his wife and at once jumped out of his buggy and shot him. ------------------------------------------------------- LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Mrs. Mary E. HUGHES, administrator of the estate of James E. HUGHES, has given notice to creditors to file their claims against the estate. -Dr. J.A. He sets a good example to many younger people in that he never complains, but accepts his lot, and everything as it comes, as being for the best. TUESDAY AFTERNOON while Mrs. M.E. KERR was crossing a ditch on the road between George DODGE's and her place, the hold-back straps on the harness broke and the vehicle ran forward, striking the horse, which ran away. Mrs. KERR was thrown out and struck upon her head. She was found in an unconscious condition and remained so for several hours, but is now improving, though it will be some time before she fully recovers. WILLIE SMITH, the 15-year-old son of O.F. SMITH, was badly bitten by a spider Sunday morning. He has hastily taken to town and his suffering, which had become intense by that time, relieved. He is again able to be around though not yet fully recovered. ------------------------------------------------------- ARMONA ITEMS -- -A.L. Does anybody know of a website with passenger lists of ships that went north from Panama in the 1850s? I have been trying to find my HICKS family. They left Pennsylvania and ended up in Nevada City. Jan in San Diego ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty Loose" <betty@unisette.com> To: <norcal@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 19, 2010 1:06 PM Subject: [NORCAL] Sac Union Sept 24 1852 The Daily Union Sacramento, Cal. Friday, September 24, 1852 PANAMA ITEMS - The steamer Brother Jonathan arrived at Panama on the 3d inst., having made the run from Valparaiso to that port in twelve days. The roads on the Isthmus are represented to be in a very bad condition. Showers are very frequent. There is but little sickness on the Isthmus. The steamer Illinois brought 350 passengers, most of whom will come up on the Golden Gate and Winfield Scott. The Panama Echo of the 3d inst. states that the Vice President of the Panama Railroad Company, and the chief Engineer, came out from New York on the Illinois - that they will soon be in Panama - that there have been eight miles more of the road put under contract - that said eight miles are at this end of the road - that all that is necessary to import from the United States (they expect) will be here in a few days, and, that the execution of the contract will be very shortly commenced. Recorderís Court - Before Judge McGREW. SEPTEMBER 23, 1852 Assault and Battery - ACHOON in this case was the defendant, Choon- Foke plaintiff. The left visual organ of the latter in deep mourning, evinced that a game of gouge, thrust or tumble had been enacted. ACHOON averred that he was innocent of the charge, "He never fight no man. He give SHOON-FOKE push, who fall himself. He want CHOON-FOKE leave, he no leave, he fall." Choon-Fokeís testimony was directly the opposite of this, so that the Recorder suspended judgment till this morning, that he might inform himself better of the facts, through the medium of some Chinaman better acquainted with the English language. Julia MASON, alias Biddy, vs. Mrs. OíLEARY, for assault and battery. A large bruise on the right cheek and a cluster of small scabs under the nose, imparted to Biddyís countenance no very agreeable complexion, and showed very plainly that she was more or less of a termagant pugilist. A swinging motion of the right hand when she address the court - an affecting application of the same member to her heart, with an occasional long drawn sigh and gesticulation of the cross, were convincing proofs of her high regard for piety and whisky. "Broke your glass, Mrs. O'LEARY! Me broke your glass! Na, na, na. I broke no glass. The Lord forgive her for that." A gush of tenderness had nearly overpowered the sensitive heart of the amiable plaintiff, whos dreamy gaze fixed itself upon the floor, while she rocked her body backwards and forwards in an agony of grief. An obliviousness of memory incapacitated her from answering the inquiry as to whether she had not been drunk or drinking when she went to Mrs. OíLearyís house. She "did not know - she was then, just as she is now." The conclusion from the reply was easy and satisfactory. Biddy was ordered from the court. Her own testimony proved her the aggressor upon an innocent woman. Before reaching the door of egress, she turned a look of withering scorn upon the executors of justice, and was about to accompany it with a volley, when the repeated order in a louder key, caused her to change her determination and hasten from their hated presence. Several other unimportant cases were disposed of. MARRIED On Tuesday, September 21st, in St. Patrickís Church, San Francisco, by Rev. J. McGINNIS, Mrs. John P. BUCKLEY to Miss C.A. M. Hi Dee, Good/bad day for news. I'm interested in the SHAHAMARIAN case. I hope there are more updates. Also, can you tell me how I would find the location of the estate of Dr. MEUX? Thanks! FYI: Benicia Female Seminary was the precursor of Mills College in Oakland, my alma mater. Patty --- On Wed, 5/19/10, Betty Loose <betty@unisette.com> wrote: From: Betty Loose <betty@unisette.com> Subject: [NORCAL] Sac Union Sept 21 1852 To: norcal@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 1:04 PM The Daily Union Sacramento, Cal. Tuesday morning, September 21, 1852 BENICIA FEMALE SEMINARY - A preventive influence at home to parents desirous of emigrating with their families to California, has been the want of proper female academies of learning. This objection no longer applies. A female seminary is now in successful operation as above designated, under the management of a Board of Visitors and Board of Trustees, composed of the first gentlemen of the State, and conducted by teachers whose abilities have been well tested, and who are known to be the proper guardians of female morals and manners. This institution should be encouraged. Its branches of learning are numerous, and its course thorough. Address Miss Susan A. LORD, Principal, Benicia. THE EDITOR of the California Express reads a lecture full of bitter denunciation, to a brutal class of citizens of Marysville, who have lately been in the habit of tying tin kettles and bunches of crackers to the dogsí tails, and starting them off through the public streets. >From this cause, it says, at least two fires have originated. The scoundrels deserve to be lashed to the horns of a wild bull that they might experience a portion of that misery which they inflict upon one of the most faithful of dumb creatures. EDITORIAL VISITORS - Messrs. LULL, of the San Francisco Whig, and SMITH, of the Marysville Herald, gave a passing visit to our office yesterday morning, both of whom we were glad to find in the enjoyment of vigorous health. The former of these gentlemen is on his return from a visit to the mining regions, and brings cheering news of the political prospect in almost every place that he has been. The Whig miners are now wider awake than many who has double the chances for procuring political intelligence. We are glad of this. The wind set in from the right quarter. The Sonora Herald of the 18th inst., contains the following items: SEVERE ACCIDENT - On Tuesday morning last, William BEDDOES, a young man working in the blacksmith shop of BALL and WARDEN, was engaged in grinding a large shingle knife, when, by some mishap, it caught on the stone; and the edge of the knife striking against his left wrist, completely severed the (rest of line missing). The hemorrhage was so profuse as to place the young manís life in extreme danger. Drs. BRUNER and GUNN, however, were soon in attendance, and succeeded in stopping the blood. The patient is now in a fair way to do well. STILL WORSE - On Wednesday morning a similar accident happened to a man of the name of W. MARTIN, while engaged in the erection of Mayor DODGEís adobe building, the staging upon which he was standing happened to give way, when he caught hold of the adjoining building to save himself, striking his bare arm violently against a tin water- gutter, which cut through the whole lower part of the arm, about half- way between the wrist and elbow. Dr. BONNER and GUNN dressed the wound successfully. It is a very severe injury, however, and it will be some days before the sufferer can be pronounced out of danger.
