I have been trying to determine the cause of my ggrandmother's "affliction" for several years. She was first adjudged insane in 1882 and sent to Napa. She was returned home in 1885 and, adjudged still insane, sent to Stockton where she died in 1912. In the Trinity County Court house, I found the Superior Court Ledger that stated my ggrandfather, George Vitzthum, swore that his wife, Theresa, was "insane, and by reason of such insanity dangerous to be at large". A warrant was signed for her arrest. Family "story" says that she went insane by having too many children too fast (11). It could have been menopause, post-partem, or just plain "don't touch me". I find it interesting that the signing Judge was a relative my marriage (T.E. Jones). In any case, I have never been able to discover what made ggrandfather decide that she was insane and/or dangerous. Still looking.... Betty

When we were kids, 1949 or so, Mom had a friend who we knew as Mrs Lacas. Mrs Lacas(Not sure about spelling) read tea leaves and read the cards , told fortunes, for Mom and her friends. Mom had her at the house with a couple of Moms friends for a session and chased us kids outside for the event. ( The doorknob was missing, a hole in the door, and we caught a garter snake and stuck it through the door for a prank.) Mrs Lacas said she didn't flush when she peed because she could not see the sense of wasting 5 gallons of water for a few drops of Peepee. . A women ahead of her time! Anyway, she was a widow and lived alone in a little house in town and was a bit odd. I suppose she was a spiritualist of sorts. Her neighbor complained about her and somehow managed to get her committed to Agnew. Mom went there to see her a few times before she died. A harmless old lady who wouldn't hurt a fly. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Raymond" <perfectlefty59@comcast.net> To: <norcal@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2010 4:05 PM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Agnews History Museum > My great Aunt ended up there because her mother decided she was > "rebellous". > > She was later"cured", married and lived, I guess, a normal life. > > > ----------------------------------------- > NORCAL ARCHIVES: > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ > Enter NORCAL. Thanks Perrin - I had an aunt who was placed in Agnews by her husband who wanted to marry someone else and putting her in Agnews for 'hysteria' was the easy way out - easier than a divorce and much less costly. She ultimately had a 'nervous breakdown' --- oh really? Wonder why! There were some very sad stories connected with Agnews and many of the early State Hospitals like that one. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Friday, 3 JULY 1896 *********************** MARRIAGE -- FORD-KING -- In Visalia, June 8, 1896, by Rev. J.B. HOLLOWAY; Phillip FORD and Miss Annie M. KING, both of Hanford. [The news of the wedding of the young couple was quite a surprise to their many friends here, when it became known a few days ago. Phil has many friends here who have extended their congratulations. Mrs. FORD has gone to Texas to be at the bedside of a relative, who is very ill.] MARRIAGE -- CLARK-JOHNSON -- At the residence of Mr.&Mrs. Frank SHARPLES, in Hanford, at 2:30 p.m. on July 1, 1896, by Rev. C.S. LINSLEY, Cosmor B. CLARK and Miss Emma JOHNSON. [The marriage took place in the handsomely decorated parlors of the SHARPLES residence, underneath a marriage bell, and in the presence of quite a number of invited guests. A nice lunch was served after the ceremony. At 5:40 p.m. the happy couple took the train for Berkeley, where they will spend a month visiting Mr. CLARK's parents and will then return to Hanford to reside. The young couple have the best wishes of many friends here, including the 'Journal,' for a life of prosperity and happiness.] [from Local Paragraphs column] -- The relatives of Miss Maude FANCHER, deceased, arrived in Hanford last Wednesday evening and the funeral of deceased took place yesterday at 10 a.m., from the residence of John HERIFORD, cousin of Miss FANCHER, services being conducted by Rev. W.L. MILLER, pastor of the M.E. Church. A large number of people attended the funeral and saw the remains deposited in their last resting place in the Lakeside cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------ A BAD ACCIDENT -- An Elderly Couple From Lemoore Thrown Out of a Buggy in Hanford -- Mr.&Mrs. O.C. BROWN, who reside on a farm near Lemoore, met with a bad accident last Wednesday forenoon. They drove to Hanford in a buggy and when near the corner of Harris and Seventh Sts., Pauline, the youngest daughter of E. LORD, mounted on a bicycle, ran into their vehicle, between the front and hind wheels of the buggy. The child was thrown off but not hurt, neither was the bicycle. But the horse in the buggy took fright and turned the vehicle over. Mr.&Mrs. BROWN were both thrown out. Mr. BROWN was considerably cut about the head. Mrs. B. was the worst injured of the two. She was badly cut in the face and head and a fracture of her skull was at first feared. Both were taken to the residence of E.W. HOGLE, just opposite the scene of the accident. After Mr. BROWN's head was bandaged he was able to be about again, but Mrs. BROWN was unconscious for some time and it will be several days before she will be able to go home. The horse, after throwing Mr.&Mrs. BROWN out, ran several blocks and collided with a tree in front of Frank WENDLING's residence. The horse was here detached from the vehicle by some boys. The shafts and top of the buggy were wrecked and the horse slightly injured. Pauline LORD is only a little girl but she has good control of a bike. The accident was not doubt caused by a sharp turn made by Mr. BROWN at the corner, as he started first to turn one way and then made a sharp turn and went another way, resulting in the bike colliding with the buggy. ------------------------------------------------------ LOCAL PARAGRAPHS -- -Letus CROWELL, a graduate of the Hanford Union High school, has been invited to stump Kings County for the Republican party. -L.M. FREDERICK has gone over to Lethent switch (formerly Lillis) across the river from Lemoore where he will have charge of the station platform and received and store grain, etc. -Dr. DUNCAN and wife will leave today for San Francisco, from which city they will accompany some Eastern friends to Portland, Oregon. They will be gone about a week. -"Chuck" FRIANT is down from Truckee on a visit. He is as good natured and genial as ever and is enjoying the greeting of his many old friends.
