Listers, I was alerted a few days ago that the LDS 'old site' may be closed down since they want us to use the 'new site' - it was suggested that those of us who still find the 'old site' helpful should write to them and let them know our concerns. If they would combine the two, well, wouldn't that be nice. With my family roots in several Northern Cal counties, I am right there with you Armendine. I constantly ask my cousins, What is a tree? Where is the green? I forgot. Living in the Mojave desert where everyone 'loves' the BROWN here, I say, no, I don't like all the variations of brown. I WANT GREEN TREES. They think I am crazy. Take it easy up there Linda - you have had enough to go through this past year without more wibbly wobbling around with earthquakes. Back in 1969-1970 when I went to school at Humboldt State, I had old friends in the Los Angeles area, relatives in San Jose and newer friends in Stockton who had no idea that there was any California north of San Rafael...much less that it took me more than half a day to drive there from Stockton. Thank goodness the road is much faster, better and less covered with miscellaneos landslides than it was at that time. Now if they would get the 101 through Santa Rosa and the two lane around the really bad area done. Maybe they have, I haven't driven that way since May 2010. Even I didn't know about Hoopa until husband I worked for a wholesale plumbing supply that supplied the pipe for a new water system on the reservation up there. The Contra Costa Gazette Martinez, Contra Costa County, California Saturday, 26 SEPTEMBER 1874 *********************************************** MARRIED - BUNKER-BOOTH - In San Francisco, Sept. 22d, by Rev. Mr. JEWELL; Mr. William M. BUNKER and Miss Alice BOOTH. DIED - STONE - In Pacheco, Sept. 22d, Charles E., infant son of J.J. and Anna STONE, aged 4 months, 11 days. THE SUICIDE at CLAYTON - The jury of inquest as to the cause of the death of Robert BENTLY, held at Clayton on Thursday of last week under direction of Justice CARPENTER, acting as Coroner, found upon the evidence, that he died from the effects of self-administered dose of arsenic. The deceased was a native of England, 61 years of age, whose habits were intemperate and who appeared to fancy that he was neglected by his relatives. From the evidence it was shown that he had frequently declared an intention of taking his own life; and on the day of his death, when considerably under the influence of liquor, about 11 o'clock in the forenoon he declared to several persons that he had taken arsenic, exhibiting to them the tumbler from which he had taken it, in the bottom of which the sediment or dregs of some white substance was observable. Until evening, however, nothing in his action or symptoms indicated that he had taken poison. He vomited some during the evening and died an hour before midnight, about 12 h ours after taking the poison. FATAL ACCIDENT - On Tuesday last, a young man in the employ of W.E. WHITNEY was killed near the New York Landing by being thrown from his seat and run over by the wagon in which he was hauling water. The team became frightened and unmanageable in crossing the railroad track, and the driver's seat upon the water tank not being such as enabled him to keep it, with the unsteady motion of the wagon, occasioned his fall and the fatal consequences. The deceased was about 22 years of age and English by birth. He was known as "English Jim," and we have not been able to learn his true full name. A SIERRA HUNTING PARTY - A hunting party comprising Warren BROWN, N.B. SMITH, Henry BROWN, V.B. RUSSELL, W.A. SMITH, Elam BROWN, H. OPDYKE and L.M. BROWN, set out from here about a month ago, with 3 wagons well stocked with commissary supplies for a mountain hunting fishing excursion, directing their course to the district near the summit of the Sierra Nevada between the head waters of the Stanislaus and Tuolumne. 3 of the party, L.M. BROWN, V.B. RUSSELL and Elam BROWN, returned this week, looking as if mountain cam life had agreed with them. They report favorably of the enjoyments of the excursion, and having left the other members of the party in camp, intending still to protract their stay, and bring home some bear skins, though they had not, up to that time, bagged any larger game than deer. PERSONAL - Captain George W. GIFT, a once resident of our county but recently from Memphis, Tennessee, has purchased an interest in and taken editorial charge of the San Rafael 'Herald.' Capt. GIFT is a gentleman of ardent, energetic temperament, a facile and vigorous writer, and withal, an earnest champion of public enterprise, who will not fail to make the 'Herald' useful in promoting the interests of the town and county as well as readable.
