I looked up the births of the girls this afternoon; they have married and one has divorced. Amazing what we find on the internet these days! I believe early birth records would only be newspaper records, or church records. check sfgenealogy for the newspaper indexes, or the California digital newspaper collection Kat

Thank you for going to so much trouble. Yes, I have all that. I need to prove the marriage and was hoping his obituary would do that. The rest I can prove. He is my 5th cousin, once removed. Didn't know he had come to CA Cathy The road to life begins at 70 old Chinese saying, courtesy of my daughter-in-law
Cathy, When I did the google search for Arthur Lutes I saw he is mentioned in 25 April 1939 in the Bakersfield Californian In the CADI it shows his mmn was Gaines According to ancestry.com records he was born in Alabama, parents were George J Lutes and Ada Pearl Gaines. He served in the army 1916-1919 Family trees show him with a wife Crystal Schleif Lutes and two daughters living Crystal Gaines is also mentioned in the Bakersfield Californian but since I do not have a subscription I can not see the whole article Kat
The Contra Costa Gazette Martinez, Contra Costa County, California Saturday, 10 OCTOBER 1874 ********************************************* MARRIED - WITHEROW-MORGAN - In Martinez, Oct. 3d, by Hon. Thomas A. BROWN, County Judge; Mr. William WITHEROW and Miss Barbara L. MORGAN, both of Nortonville. MARRIED - BACON-NORTON - At Tacoma, W.T., Sept. 27th, by Judge S.S. WHITE; S. BACON of Concord, Contra Costa county, Cal., and Mrs. M.J. NORTON of Seattle, W.T. DIED - HAMILTON - Near Pacheco, Sept. 20th, George William, infant son of John B. and Sarah D. HAMILTON, aged 4 months, 29 days. DIED - HAYS - In Sycamore Valley, Oct. 2d, Van, only son of Mr.&Mrs. Wade HAYS, aged about 9 years. WM. P. KELLOGG, having been appointed Superintendent of the Justice mine at Gold Hill, last Saturday evening went with 4 armed men to take possession, when they were fired upon by a party in a building at the mine and all of them killed. CHAPTER of SERIOUS ACCIDENTS - Within a short time past a number of quite serous accidents have occurred in the Sycamore Valley District neighborhood, all within a few days. Something more than 2 weeks ago, as we hear, Mr. Timothy FITZGERALD, by a fall from his wagon, was seriously hurt, both externally and internally, but to what extent our informant was unable to report. A lad named DOBSON, about 12 years old, step-son of Mr. John CAMP, had his hand shattered terribly by the accidental discharge of a gun that he was lifting by the muzzle. He was removed to the Alameda hospital for treatment, and it was feared that he might have to suffer an amputation of the injured member. A Mr. SIMPSON, of the same neighborhood, about the same time, while replacing a sack of wheat that had fallen off his load, was thrown by the turning of his team, so that the wagon passed over and crushed his leg, fracturing it badly. COMING HOME - The letter from Dr. HOWARD in this issue is probably the last of the graphic, instructive and interesting series, given to the readers of the 'Gazette' and 'Ledger,' from time to time, during his late visit to the other side of the continent, as a note accompanying this letter, dated at Chicago, Sept. 30th, informs us that he expects to be home in about 2 weeks from that date. With exception of the eldest daughter, "Etta," the Doctor and his family are well; and friends will regret to learn that she is suffering from a severe cold, taken upon the lungs in July last, attended with daily hectic symptoms and increasing debility. HORSE BREAKING - Mr. R.H. TAPP, of whose system of making horses obedient and gentle for use Mr. COUSINS of Pinole speaks so favorably in a note published in this issue of the 'Gazette,' proposes opening a school for instruction in his methods at the low charge of $1 for each person instructed; and will give the 1st lesson today (Saturday), at BENNETT's stable, at 1 o'clock p.m. FOUND - Mr. F.D. BRIARE, of this place, would be pleased to restore 2 shawls and a pair of lady's shoes, if the owners by whom they were accidentally left at his ice cream stand during the Fair last week, will call for and identify them. SERIOUS EXPLOSION - By the premature explosion of a charge, several men who were firing an anvil salute at Guerneville, Sonoma county, last week, in jubilation over the Local Option decision of the Supreme Court, were quite seriously, and some of them perhaps fatally injured. The Santa Rose 'Democrat' gives the following report of the casualty: The firing continued from 11 to 1 o'clock on Wednesday morning. The 4 were close around the anvil. From the best account we could get, one of the young men was priming the anvil; Wash FINLEY stood near with a bottle of powder, containing, it is thought, 3 pounds. In firing anvils the cavity is filled with powder, a card is placed over the charge and another anvil on top; it is then fired with a heated iron rod. It is supposed that a particle of the card which covered the previous charge was on fire, either in the anvil or around it. As they were preparing for the shot, the explosion came; simultaneously the bottle burst in the hand of FINLEY, and the whole party were hurled from 15 to 20 feet through the air. The scene which followed was painful beyond description. FINLEY, who held the bottle, was fearfully burned. His face, hands and neck are badly powder-stained, and cut by fragments of glass. He can hardly speak, and his eyesight is in great danger. A fragment of flying gl ass s evered TAGGERT's jugular vein, and the blood spurted to a distance of several feet from the wound. For a time his life was in jeopardy. A man named HICKEY succeeded in tying the vein, TAGGERT's face is also badly cut and power-marked. John WILSON received a bad cut over the eye, which lowered the upper lid over the cheek; he is otherwise cut and burned. The 4th man, whose name we did not learn, escaped with little injury. Good idea, Kat. I should have thought to contact the cemetery since I had learned which one it was. I know better!!!!! Here I am doing all this stuff for people with "roots" in Marin County, and then I don't "think" for myself. OH, dear! Getting old can be a real pain in the rear! Thanks so much for the kick in the pants! Especially since I had contacted the Bakersfield library regarding an obit lookup and they want $15! Kripes! I do it for free, and when I am doing my volunteer thing down at the Civic Center library, they only charge $5. CAthy In a message dated 3/9/2012 5:13:18 P.M. Hi Cathy, I just did a Google search searching for "Newspaper obits Bakersfield" (don't use quotes <g>) and got lots of hits. Bet you can find the newspaper and your obit. Things seem to be all linked into Legacy these days... I've recently found several this way and they come to my screen .... just like magic from the local paper.... - ALSO - I saved this old post that Sharon Dulcich posted in 2008. I was very impressed with this site (tho a little hard to get a handle on at first...). I found an obit on a cousin who died in San Fernando Valley - it is a cinch and free supplied by the Library that I selected in the area of interest. Southern California offers so little I felt it was a good lead to have this - so I saved it.. Hope you are as successful, as I was... I've sent the whole post, but good change Sharon does not have the same e-mail address. She moved to Texas, I think - but used to do so much work in So California for the list... Here's her post. I know you are asking about Kern county and this is about a query in LA County - but maybe KERN CO is also in this site... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Los Angeles County is very big. The area is very user unfriendly due to distance, traffic, costs, etc. Not very many people had obits in the Los Angeles Times and there are/were at least 100 other newspapers for the various towns and cities of the county. Many deaths were simply not noted in the newspapers by obituaries or funeral notices, since this is not a requirement in California Unless you are certain which newspaper an obit would be found in, locating one could take weeks since obituaries could appear in many different newspapers, and the different libraries have different papers depending on their location, & no library in Southern California has copies of all of them. A volunteer cannot just go to one place and have access to all the possible papers of Los Angeles Co. Most deaths that are noted in the newspapers receive only a funeral notice (not an actual obituary article), and these are not indexed, nor were they always in the same place in the newspaper. In the early years, there wasn't even a column for these notices, and one must search each page of the newspapers carefully when looking for obituaries or funeral notices. However, it is possible to find obituaries in Southern California. Please visit this website that gives very good instructions about locating an obit in Southern California: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~socalobituaries/ You might also get the death cert and find out the name of the Funeral Director and then, if possible, contact them to see if an obit was even submitted to any newspaper and if so, which one. Sharon Dulcich ([email protected]) Kern Co. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Good luck, obits are so great to have... Hi gang, THought this might make your day. In todays Time-Standard (Eureka,CA.) comes this fairly large news item, but I'll shorten it considerably for you. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ~ An undated photo is found of 2 twin ladys, and was the only item the El Dorado CO. Sheriff's office had to work with. It is unknown which sister is which. Authorities found the 73 year old twins dead, together, in their South Lake Tahoe home on 26, February. It took 11 days and the help of dozens of strangers, but the girls have been identifyed as Patricia and Joan Miller. but police had been able to locate any of their family members. Pat and Joan Miller lived for nearly 40 years in the Tahoe area, but often shunned their neighbors. Their shared life ended in a mysterious double death. One sister died in a bedroom , the other in a hallway. Labs will take approx 2 months. Police don't usually release the names of the dead, but no family were immediatly known of, so investigators issued a public plea, asking for any help in locating any relatves to notify about the deaths. The responce was overwhelming. E-Mails and phone calls poured in and with the help of amateur genealogist, who read over media accounts of the sisters deaths, inverstigators tracked down a 1st cousin and 2, 2nd cousins as of last wednesday.. They were tracked down by the "at- home" genealogy sluths, who passed on the information and contact info to the Sheriff's Office. 1 sluth even contacted a cousin to confirm their relatioship before telling the Sheriff. 1 of the cousins lives in San Francisco, the 2 other live in Portland Oregon. As to date, no will has been found. Genealogist found this info: Father: Elmon "Bud" Gordon MILLER. b: 1895, Bremen, KY. occ: Dairy Salesman, Oakland, CA. Mother: Faye LANG. Amazing story don't you think? ~hum.Linda~ Words are the window to the Heart.
