    3. Linda: Thanks for these. California was involved in this war too - I have a cousin who enlisted in Lake County and spent the entire war in San Francisco waiting to be shipped out to the Phillipines - and never left the city. There are some links to this in the Norcal archive records. 3. Hi Guys, I would like to check the passenger list of the steamboat America who left San Francisco on the 4th of November 1869 to Honk Kong and Yokahama. This steamboat was owned by The Pacific Mail Steamship Company and I have no idea if they kept records of that time. Is anybody have already did some research of that sort ? 2. On Sunday March 11, 2012 I attended a session by Steve Morse. He commented that a major commercial company would be using outsourced individuals to index the 1940 census. He also stated that consortium of other groups were asking for volunteers to help index the 1940 census. Either way this process would take between six and nine months to accomplish.   His website has a tutorial that can help individuals prepare for researching the 1940 census but he cautions that you use the stevemorse.org address and NOT the one that ends with .com.   Eugene ----- Original Message ----- Dear Group,   I've been reading information at different sites that claims that most people will have difficulty researching the 1940 Census material that will be released on April 2nd.   On Ancestry, it appears they will have some sort of search engine to assist researchers. Is this true or just "hype"?   What is the most effective way to access this new information?   Will we need to wait for the data to be entered into a database. If so, how long will it take until it is assessable for your average researcher?   Thanks in advance,   Dean   PS This is too exciting for us to remain so quiet!

    3. I am a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and received an email last week about the indexing of the 1940 census. FamilySearch has partnered with the APG to help with indexing the census. According to the email they want to have it all indexed by the end of summer. They are looking for volunteers, so if anyone is interested they can check with FamilySearch.org to see how they can help with the indexing project. I think this is how Ancestry has handled most all of their indexing of records, using outside help to do the actual indexing. Karen S. Ancestry says they'll be 'on it' and making databases as soon as they get the Census documents. I don't know what type of search engine they'll begin with...but I'm sure that the searchability of the database will improve the longer they have the 1940 Census documents. I'll probably stumble around with ancestors I KNOW were in a certain place at a certain time and see what is available. My hope is that Ancestry has HAD the documents for a while and will release their database that's at least partially 'workable' for the average researcher. I have NO CERTAINTY that this has happened so don't quote me. Just a recurring wish/dream ;~) Perrin > Dear Group, >   > I've been reading information at different sites that claims that most > people will have difficulty researching the 1940 Census material that will > be released on April 2nd. >   > > > ----------------------------------------- > NORCAL ARCHIVES: > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ > Enter NORCAL.
