    3. Hi Folks, Was Major Reading in the Mexican American War? I guess what I am wanting to know is if he was amongst the Union troops who were sent out here by Pres. Polk to "settle the west" to thus protect the gold they knew was out here for the Union, knowing that a civil war was almost evident to happen. 3. Started looking for my mother in Newport News, Va. Haven't found her yet, but did find my father's first wife in Blacksburg, Montgomery Co., Va. They divorced that year. Looking now for my dad. I think he might still be in the county. My mother and he didn't marry until June 1941, so they won't be together. If I don't find him there, I'll look in Spotsylvania Co., where his family will be. Fun looking at the 1940. Sadly I won't find myself until the 1950 comes out. :( Oh well, ten years will go too fast. LOL Sherry Harris

    3. I had only light memories of where my parents would have lived in 1940. I signed on to the archives and diddled around a bit. Then I found steve morse's tool to find all the ED's in denver, colorado. I entered a couple of addresses I remembered, and I had very good luck on the 3rd or 4th try. Eureka, the old address appeared at the top of a page and my parents were the first listed on that page along with my brother and me at 4 and 7 mos of age. don't give up easily, you will stumble on it before you know it. I did have problems downloading the image. I clicked download and was unable to open the item due to a lack of any file type provided by the official site. So I took out my digital camera and copied the information seen on the screen for posterity. -- Robert Stacey has moved to Casa Glendale and Jeeter Dawg now lives with a family in Burbank including Amber, Linda, and Martin.

Thanks for all who helped me find the rest of the story so far. Today am being battered by a Pacific Storm with strong winds..bad enough that the birds won't feed this morning. ~hum.Linda~ Words are the window to the Heart.

    3. Thanks so much Susan; My Cobb, Marble and Hinton families were living in Lake County since the 1860s. My Hinton grandfather moved his family from Lower Lake, Lake County to Willitts, Mendocino County about 1908. I heard stories about the time they lived in these places, so expected to see some of my names in the listing you sent - then realized they moved back to Lake County after 1910 so, of course, they missed being mentioned in the newspaper. The early newspapers printed so much local news. I am indeed grateful to all transcribers - these snippets give us a glimse into the lives of our family (my father, his sisters and brothers) made the 'papers' occasionally in Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties. Our family especially sends thanks to Phil Carnahan for his labor of love to record the cemeteries (and photograph the markers for us who cannot get there), and for the transcriptions he has extracted for Mendocino County. Those of us who see our family names in these transcriptions send lots of HUGS for doing this for us.
