So far, I think the archives.gov site is the better of the two. They allow you to put in a cross-street as well, which really narrowed down my search. I found the enumeration district on a 1930 census and I already knew the street address. I put that into Google maps and found the cross-streets. My grandparents were on image 28 of 34, so it still took some patience, but I found them! Question: Does anybody know how/where to get a blank copy of the 1940 census? Ancestry provides blank copies for all the others, but I didn't see one there. Thanks and good luck! I found some of my ancestors in California...but the town was small and so I just went through all 4 enumeration districts to find them. I found my mom in rural Virginia just by luck! Looked at the areas covered by the enumeration districts and clicked on the one I thought looked 'best'...my grandparents and my mom and her sibs were the first folks on the page...how lucky is that??? So far, I've been lucky on two out of three attempts, using the cross street feature. The first was easy, as I knew the intersection. For the second, I used Google Earth to "drive" down the street my grandparents lived on, found a house that looked like it was the one, picked up the nearest cross street and went from there. As for the third, the property was outside the city limits and I was unable to locate the county listing. I need to play on the site more, and (sigh) read the directions. I reported that I was able to find my parents listing with me and my brother included in the 1940 census of Denver, Colorado within a few minutes on the first day. I used Steve Morse's program to find ED's by city name and street address. I was unable to copy the image at that time and had to use my camera to copy several images of the finding because I could not get a successful download. Today I tried again and first I got the wrong page of the series 1-24 as a download. I scrolled through to no. 12 which was the correct page and found that I could download it, copy it, paste it and send it along to my brother. I also now have a copy as jpeg in my family census image collection. So keep on trying folks, it does work, but due to such huge demand you may have to try again at a lucky hour. There was a James Armstrong Blakemore who shows up in the Great Register of Trinity County - 1888. He was living in Lewiston on 11 April 1884. His age was 64 and he was born in Virginia. He might have been John's father. I find nothing in Ancestry for a John Armstrong Blakemore. Also, I searched for him at UC Berkeley around the turn of the century to about 1920.... Again, nothing. The J. A. Blakemore who died in 1942 could be the James Armstrong. His name is Major PIERSON Benjamin READING, Having retired from the military in 1843, came in 1844 to California, he secured from the Mexican government a land grant for what then was known as ' Rancho San Buenaventura', orgin land area was from Cottonwood Crk, north, he then built an adobe home for his family, in 1930 was named an state historical site, and centered in what is REDDING this day, est: 1872. In 1874, the Legislature changed the name from Redding to Reading, but 6 yrs later, returned it back to Redding,CA. The town was a major train hub as it employment and sustained many freight business as it does today. He was responsible for the 1st Gold Find, of Calif. in 1848, before John SUTTER's, Alburn Find, in 1849, and panned out some $80,000 in 6 weeks on Clear Creek.(Wvvlle). This triggered the 2 nd big Gold Rush of the Fall of 1849. A rough bunch of claim jumpers, from Oregon, jumped the READING claims, driving him away. He returned to Redding and ranching. READING was amoung the 1st white man to climb Lassen Peak, in the company of the 1st white woman, in 1864. Also in the same yr. became partner with man name of BUMPASS, and began mining Sulfur from the many hot springs on Lassen. In 1890's, Copper was mined, the largest company being MOUTAIN COOPER Co., this required some 500 to 600 cords of wood a month. as the gold finds declined, the census records show a populas of 2,500 then. In time, by the time the Great Depression arrived, all the early life sustaning works had dissappeared. Some other records I've come across records stating that he 1st toured throught Northern Calif as a Union Calvery Officer with Jebediah Smith in 1828. Hope this helps. ~hum.Linda~ Words are the window to the Heart.
Hi Janie, You are always very helpful. I don't quite remember the monument but I remember visiting the area of Reading's Bar and going to the Reading Island spot with your daughter. I remember the marker, have pics etc. I am really grateful for that precious visit! And, Thank you too for reminding me that Reading retired from the military in 1843 and came to Ca two years before the Mexican War so that he really wasn't sent out here with the other Union soldiers to "settle the west" and protect the gold from southerners. Yet everything I see about him almost attests to the fact that he was still looking for that gold, actually found it, and from other sources I feel that he still was staunchly a government advocate for the Union army; the gold, his horses, the whole bit. Thank you & Thank you Linda as well. You guys are awesome! marilyn ________________________________ From: Janie <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, April 5, 2012 12:57 AM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Major Reading A monument stands at Reading's Bar on Clear Creek Road just west of Redding. Folks, It is critically important that in your normal email routine you do NOT open ANY attachments or click URLS unless they are from a trusted source and even then, be careful. A particularly nasty virus is out where an email comes from a legitimate source with nothing but an URL in the body text. Most of us would send something like that with a description of the site. The URLS are for untrustworthy or unwholesome web sites. This email is the result of someone who's email has been hijacked. Unfortunately, sometimes these messages come to our lists through subscribers who don't know their emails have been hacked as happened today on the NORCAL list. The Rootsweb SPAM filters are getting pretty good at flagging and stopping these emails but some get through. As Listmom this is what I do when it happens: 1) Immediately put the person on "moderate" and attempt to let them know they've been hijacked. They don't "see" the sent messages, so they often don't believe it. 2) Initiate the removal of the SPAM message from the archives. 3) Monitor the person's messages until there are no more virus emails, then restore their status. What you should do: 1) Do NOT click on URL. Simply delete the message. 2) Do NOT report or flag the email as SPAM. Rootsweb will take care of that. (With AOL, and some other ISPs, if you do that you are immediately, and I mean immediately, unsubbed by the listserv. 3) Do contact the person privately if you like, to let them know. 4) Do NOT forward the email intact to anyone else. If you want to forward it to me or the infected person, delete the URL from your reply. 5) Do NOT repost the message to the list or reply on the list. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Yvonne Bowers Listmom, Webmom NORCAL, SOCAL http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/norcallib.html

I had fun today searching the 1940 census and found 3 of my families. (But it is a small town.) I searched Ancestry.com and I couldn't find anyplace listing the column headings and I couldn't read all the headings. Is there anyplace yet that has the blank forms or column headings listed? Thanks, Kaylene
