    3. At least with the LDS effort at familysearch, we started indexing California yesterday, I think. At least I started arbitrating the work of the two indexers for each record. BTW for anyone interested they could use more indexers and you don't have to belong to the church to do it. The images are the best I've ever seen. There are numerous states now to work on. And the good news is...it's all for free. EdrieAnne

    1. [NORCAL] Searchable in Ancestry in Nevada
    2. Thank goodness for the new searchable records for Nevada today. I've been looking for Grandpa all week in and around Elko, NV. without any luck. One click tonight in Ancestry in the recently loaded searchable Nevada records and he showed up in Reno. Now I've got to wait for Sacramento, California. LC

    3. I have read on another list that people have better luck downloading entire EDs and then viewing in your computer's image viewer - but you probably have to open up the zip file, unless your computer knows to do that automatically. I could not find a way to download the whole ED except by using Steve Morses's ED Finder, clicking on the ED number there (making sure Census Image has been ticked instead of ED Description), and then immediately clicking the Download button at the top of the page. Then you can choose All images that One page. That can be a lot faster during peak traffic times, but is not good for slow speed connections - the ED files I got were huge, almost 100 MB. Morse's ED finder also has a list of streets in the ED, I found that easier than using a map after asking a cousin what streets were near where she lived. http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html You mentioned using your camera - another thing to try in such times would be the Print Screen button, I think you may then have to paste it into image editing software. 3. The direct link to the 1940 census page at Ancestry is http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=2442 I just checked, not sure where that announcement was, but the dropdown menu for state does have Delaware and Nevada in it, and searching does bring people up. Wow! That is a surprise, I had called there this afternoon and an ancestry support person said they had not started indexing and it would be a while yet....as in, the end of the year. If you are going to want to browse images rather than wait for California to get indexed, Steve Morse's ED Finder is at http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html It is faster to download a whole ED using the button at the top of the first census page you get after clicking on the ED number at Morse's site (make sure the Census Image box is ticked). The one problem with downloading the entire ED at archives.gov is that the images gotten that way are huge - around 4-4.5 MB for each page, based on my experience today. If you lose the above URLs ( links), check the rootsweb archiver or you can google for "free 1940 census resources rootsweb" and hopefully the following page will come up, I am trying to keep the 1940 census information up to date there. The page also has links to other free census resources for other years. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/resources.html#c1940 On 4/5/12, Susan Slade Grossl <[email protected]> wrote: > What is the URL for that? 2. When I go to Ancestry there is a big banner add with the 'We can do it' woman. I click anywhere on that and it comes up. Once that page is up on the right side near the bottom there is a clickable link for the 1940 census. Perrin > What is the URL for that? 3. If you don't know the street , try for a 1940 City Directory of your area. If the family was there it will list (Hopefully. It did mine) with a street and address. Enter that on the archives site . http://1940census.archives.gov/ State ,County, Town, Address, Street. Then if its a long street see where the #s start and work up from there. Cuts down on a lot of pages. On mine the enumerator was going around each block and once I caught on to the routine it was a cinch. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, April 05, 2012 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [NORCAL] Sorry I failed to tell you where I got my images > thanks, Rob. They allow you to put in a cross-street as well, which really narrowed down my search. I found the enumeration district on a 1930 census and I already knew the street address. I put that into Google maps and found the cross-streets. My grandparents were on image 28 of 34, so it still took some patience, but I found them!
