    1. [NORCAL] 1940 Census Glitche on Ancestry
    2. Susan Stuart
    3. Hi everyone, I know that all of you don't belong to Ancestry, but I thought I'd pass along my recent interaction with them in case it helps anyone. Ancestry says that you can't attach the 1940 census to anyone until it is indexed, but you can attach the web link to their profile page. I did this with my grandfather and it worked fine, however, when I tried to attach it to grandma and the kids, I got an error message and it wouldn't let me. I spent over 40 minutes on the phone with Ancestry yesterday afternoon and they couldn't solve this problem. My representative got her supervisor involved and they really tried. They even pulled up my grandpa's profile page and went through the process of trying to attach it to Grandma, and no dice. They finally decided they were going to have to file an internal report, and promised me an email with an update. Today, I tried to attach the web link to my husband's grandmother (she is head of household) and I got the same error message. I'm just going to hope that when they solve the one problem, it solves the other. In the meantime, you can save the jpg of the census page to your computer, which I highly recommend because after going through 34 of 66 pages to find the family, I wouldn't want to lose it and have to do it again! Susan

    2. Susan Stuart
    3. You may never get to the bottom of it, but in my experience, census records frequently leave us with many unanswered questions. In your case, it's not the least bit unusual for women to fib about their age, and your mother probably just wasn’t home. I think many people misunderstood the questions. I have seen lots of misinformation in the Place of Birth columns which include person, father and mother. Additionally, people were sometimes afraid to state where they or their parents were from, especially during times of war. (Depending on when they were asked, my middle European ancestors were from Czechoslovakia, Hungry, or Austria, and spoke Magyar, Czech or Hungarian.) As for the rent and salary issues, your grandmother may have just told the census taker that it was none of their business! I'm sorry this census was so incomplete for you. Susan -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dean Micha Desman Sent: Sunday, April 08, 2012 3:26 PM   (There was also no salary listed for my grandfather who was a manager at his father's cooperage. No mentioned of the rent either which is very strange.)   So, why was my mother not listed? How do I get to the bottom of this? Suggestions? 3. It was hard to take my own children antics when they became teenagers. I don't know how you did it. Tom Hello, I'll just mentione briefly that I was a single-parent for 2 children for 20 yrs., from when my sons were born until they became adults. I kicked my EX out when they were babies and he was never home anyways. They always had a non-participating father (living nearby). I remained in the good-size house, and there were always other kids in the house; I helped to raise 2 nephews, and the neighbors' 2 daughters spent more time in our home than in their own home. And, my girlfriend at the time went on to have 11 children, and I babysat them .one. weekend. :o) But, then came -- the teen-age years ! They had made friends in another part of town where I didn't know those families, so I complained. My older son (the one who "pushed the buttons") said to me, OK, you don't want us over there; we'll bring everyone over here ! OUCH ! For the next 5 yrs. our home was a "teen-age drop-in center." Many weekends we would have 20 to 30 teens visiting. And, different teens lived with us for a short time or a long time. Some were "homeless" - their decisions or their parents' decision. And, the whole time .I. was the only adult in the home ! How I survived those years -- only Heaven knows ! But, since 1980, I became more aware of the Guardian Angels all around us ! Over 20 yrs. later, a few of those "teens" have found me on Facebook ! A girl wrote to tell me how much she enjoyed visiting our home. She was part of a couple - always together - and they are now married with 3 school-age children. A boy wrote to sincerely apologize for being such a "jerk" (to put it kindly) during the times he visited our home. Another couple "got pregnant" in our home; their child just graduated from high school. Another couple "got pregnant" after I lost the house to foreclosure in 1992 (because of a bad EX). I helped to raise their child during the 1990's. ... I could write a book ! ... :o) (Hoping to write it Erma Brombeck style.) 3. If your dad was home, it would account for him being listed. If he was not....heaven's only knows. Some enumerators were just plain lazy and if no one was home, they never went back. Others made it a point to go back. In the 19oo census, my then dead (4 years) grandmother was listed...had all the correct info about her, except that they had her born in Ca. She was born in NY...Have never found out why they did that! 3. You might want to look at the Louisiana Death certificates. http://www.sos.la.gov/tabid/640/Default.aspx They are all more than 50 years old. Certified copies cost $5.00. Service is very quick. I live in Louisiana but I can order one by mail on Monday and have it by Friday. There were several Backus and Bachus. These did run more than one page but if another name you search does, be sure to look at the end. They are generally in alpha order but sometimes there are additional names at the end, not in any order. If your mom was out playing...or even at school, they may have just skipped her cuz the enumerator could not say she/he saw the person....SHRUG< Could be I guess.
