    1. Re: [NORCAL] Cemetery Plot Info
    2. Paul Puente
    3. Susan I recently asked some findagrave volunteers to take some pictures at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. I did not know the plot number. When they arrived at the cemetery office they were told that only family members are authorized to have plot information despite the fact that anyone can walk around the cemetery. I followed up with the management of the cemetery and someone did get back to me and told me that the person on duty that day was mistaken and that anyone can have that information. He went on to say that they get hundreds of requests via the Internet to lookup information and with a staff of only four people (only one on at a time) it was impossible to honor those requests. However, people walking into the office at the beginning of the cemetery would receive the information so they can visit the grave. He was kind enough to send me the plot information as well as two pictures, but he said that they do have a policy of simply not responding to email lookup requests. They simply don't have the time. I suspect what you ran into at Lafayette is something similar and the management there is trying to see if there is enough business at that price point to hire another person just to do lookups. However, maybe they just want to discourage lookups all together, I just don't know. Have you just tried to show up at the office and ask for the plot number? It is a risk to take the time to drive there and then find that they won't give you that information just as it happened in my case. 2. So, anyone on the list know how I can find lists of crew members from the Wellington or any information about them? I tried the Maritime website but haven't found anything yet. Martin Hearst, who was the seaman I am looking for is in S.F. city directories in 1897, 1899, and 1900 but I never find him in a census record anywhere. The Michael James Hearst who is my grgrgrandfather is in census records from 1900, 1910, and 1920 in S.F. - he died in 1921. I never find him in census records before 1900. I need that 1890 census. I never find him in NY at all. He was born in NY mid 1850's and his first child was born in NY in 1880, the rest of kids were all born here in S.F. I was hopeful to find Martin Hearst to see if he would give me a clue. Any suggestions?? Kat

    3. Hi Kat....... I've not been following your story, so don't know the builder of this steamship - where it traveled from and to and in what time period -= HOWEVER. I do know the link to Google and searched Google for ---- Steamship Wellington --- and see this is a great deal listed there - suggest you read this links and see if there is something that matches what you are looking for. There are lots of books about steamers and other typed of ships traveling to and from the Goldfields in the mid to late 1800's (I have a few of them and though I checked all their indexed, I did not find this ship listed - so I found I could not help you - but there are lots of ships and their crews listed as well as the stories of how and where the sailed and how they sunk , if that was their fate... Look into links on Google you could stumble onto what you want... (or not).. - Also I have other links to ships and passenger lists, but seems I catch a scolding when I post links (spreading Spam, seems to be the charge in these scolding). So write to me privately and I'll send these links to you ... Fear not, just for the record... they do not contain any spam, - Good luck, Ruth ____________________ Ruth (Grady) Skewis [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2012 5:11PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NORCAL] New Question City Directories So, anyone on the list know how I can find lists of crew members from the Wellington or any information about them? I knew of no Martin Hearst but then I know nothing of my Hearst family before Michael and his wife Catherine came to California from NY. I have always wanted to pin down Michael's family but the Hearst name is very hard to search, and made more difficult by the fact that my grgrandfather is George Hearst and of course one of his brothers was William. Today I was reminded of this Martin Hearst and on a search found him in the 1897 city directory listed as follows: Hearst, Martin seaman str Wellington does anyone know what str is? My George Matthew Hearst worked at the Examiner for his entire adult life, but I know of no connection to The Hearst family. Thanks for any help, Kat

    3. Hi Nancy It's good to hear from you again. I always find your website very helpful and I have already check the 1916 telephone directory, but no go. I know the Thomas family were working class people and probably couldn't afford a phone. In the last day I have found out that George H Thomas was still alive in 1917 and had changed his occupation from "electrn" to "opr" but then he disappears from the SF City Directory in 1918. I also know from one of his step-son's WWI draft registration signed on 12 Sep 1918 that he named his mother, Elizabeth as his contact. The address was 1124 Magnolia in Oakland. So, if I could get my hands on at least the 1918 Alameda County directory I might have a chance of finding him with his new occupation. Perhaps the 1918 directory was destroyed or was never published. I can't find any source that has it. 3. Sheila, Thanks for your note. I can't imagine that they misunderstood that we were Find A Grave volunteers and just wanted plot info to take a picture, but who knows! Lafayette Cemetery is a public cemetery supported by tax dollars so maybe they are trying to make a few $$ for themselves. We have two other huge cemeteries here, and like you, I have a relationship with one of them -- I just email them for the plot information. The other is a Catholic Cemetery and you just go into the office any day of the week, and they open their book and give you the plot info and a map, and offer to walk you there if you are worried about finding it.
