Dear Sharon, EdrieAnne and other Listers! Thank you very much for your lookups of the George E. Bentel death index entry from Los Angeles, CA. I have since then been in contact with the Los Angeles National Cemetery, and we decided it cannot be "my" George after all. My George appears to have drowned in the Manitowoc river in Wisconsin in 1936 after his wife had "thrown him out" of their house in San Antonio, TX! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Dear Listers, I know it has been very difficult to obtain information from most of the California courthouses, but how is it with Contra Costa Co., CA? I would be so interested in a transcription of this gentleman's death record, if at all possible, or maybe an obituary can be found? He resided most of the time in Oakland., Alameda Co., CA where he was a linotype operator and later a newspaper man. The 1930 census shows him as a newspaper OWNER residing at San Anselmo, Marin Co., CA. Harry JOHNSTON born July 19, 1873 in Illinois died Dec. 17, 1948 in Contra Costa Co., CA His wife was Henrietta Erna JOHNSTON born June 2, 1880 in Loomis Co., CA(?) died Oct. 22, 1953 in Los Angeles Co., CA I would expect her obituary as well to be at Oakland, CA? Thanks a million to all of you for any assistance you can give me in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
I grew up in the foothills above Madera and Fresno....I was born in the late '30s....My families were in California just after the gold rush and right after the Civil war. The only prejudice I remember was about "Okies" and "Yankees" My mother, bless her soul, called every body with any accent an Okie!!.. That situation was reversed when I moved to Texas in the '80s.....I had no accent and was from California...... not a good combination here.........But it worked out great!...... Jack

I know we all grew up thinking there was no prejudice if we were white. I am pretty sure there was prejudice of a sort for lots of people because that is just human nature and we were separated by economics and racial lines for years until at least the late '50's even though I don't think we understood that was what was happening. I grew up in Merced and thought everybody was having a great life but now I know that was not true, we just did not see those that prejudice effected and no one was complaining when we did. Yes, I think the people from the south were not looked upon as being equal in some ways because of their accent and the fact that they came to California in a very hard time economically and were very poor to start out with. I do not think we had the very hard core prejudice that some parts of the country had but it was there even though we did not realize it. I think that was the problem actually, we did not realize that there was prejudice. We just let people be invisible.

I have a question for you. Many of you are familiar with the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index for 1500s-1900s In particular, I am writing about the one for San Francisco. I am wondering about the actual documents. Would anyone know how to find them? I have come across something that mentions a R.K. Colby arriving in San Francisco. I am thinking it might have been R.B. and not R.K. It would help to see the handwriting. Any thoughts on this? I don't have much more written down about my source. I am working from a small note to myself, reminding me to follow up on it. Kim Golding Tacoma

Dear Listers, Can someone who still has access to the pre-1940 California death records please check one name for me? In the Los Angeles National cemetery is buried this gentleman: George E. BENTEL born Apr. 8, 1877 in St. Joseph Co., IN died June 12, 1935 George Bentel was in 1933 a resident of San Antonio, TX where his wife Dorothea Christine Bentel died in 1951. She is also buried at San Antonio, TX in a single grave! My questions: * Can it be verified that George E. Bentel did die in California? Where in California? * Does the index entry also show his wife's initials (which I believe is common in the early death indexes from CA)? Thanks a million for your wonderful assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane Geilo, NORWAY
There is no need to discuss the SPAM email on the list. REPOST: Folks, It is critically important that in your normal email routine you do NOT open ANY attachments or click URLS unless they are from a trusted source and even then, be careful. A particularly nasty virus is out where an email comes from a legitimate source with nothing but an URL in the body text. Most of us would send something like that with a description of the site. The URLS are for untrustworthy or unwholesome web sites. This email is the result of someone who's email has been hijacked. Unfortunately, sometimes these messages come to our lists through subscribers who don't know their emails have been hacked as happened today on the NORCAL list. The Rootsweb SPAM filters are getting pretty good at flagging and stopping these emails but some get through. As Listmom this is what I do when it happens: 1) Immediately put the person on "moderate" and attempt to let them know they've been hijacked. They don't "see" the sent messages, so they often don't believe it. 2) Initiate the removal of the SPAM message from the archives. 3) Monitor the person's messages until there are no more virus emails, then restore their status. What you should do: 1) Do NOT click on URL. Simply delete the message. 2) Do NOT report or flag the email as SPAM. Rootsweb will take care of that. (With AOL, and some other ISPs, if you do that you are immediately, and I mean immediately, unsubbed by the listserv. 3) Do contact the person privately if you like, to let them know. 4) Do NOT forward the email intact to anyone else. If you want to forward it to me or the infected person, delete the URL from your reply. 5) Do NOT repost the message to the list or reply on the list. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Yvonne Bowers Listmom, Webmom NORCAL, SOCAL http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/norcallib.html
