Strangely enouigh Budal is not in Bakke but in the neighbouring parish of Gyland. In the early 19th century a Torje Tollisen - probably from Kvina in Øvre Sirdal - settled at Budal and started to build out the farm . His eldest son Tolle Torgesen, sometimes referred to as Tollifar inherited the farm Tolle married Anna Jacobsdatter Mydland and the couple had four children; Tønnes, Jakob, Beate and and Martine. Anna died 03.12.1846 and Tolle re-married - Karin Jødestøl, but the marriage was hardly a harmonious union. Karin despised her step-children and refused to look after them. The marriage ended with Karin running amok in the cowshed and attacking Tolle with a manure pitchfork. ! The infuriated Tolle reacted by strangling his second wife with a silk scarf. He was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment and the children were looked after by neigbours in the parish, one at least, Jakob, emigrated to the USA. Derek - on a warm summer morning in Kristiansand
