Hi all, Olaf's wife Grethi died last evening. Our sympathy is extended to him at this time. If you would like his address to send him a card, contact me offlist. Margit
Hi List! I've been corresponding with a non-Lister about the meaning ot "The Conference" in Ulvestad's church histories. He sent me this message that you may find interesting. Looks like those Norwegians were a rascally bunch of rebels - what else is new? Olaf I have, however, unraveled the matter of "the Conference," I think, and have found consistent references to the term "the Conference." The clearest presentation is probably found in the following URL: http://www.stolaf.edu/collections/archives/scripts/25/norwegian.html This is a history of the United Norwegian Lutheran Church in America, and the phrase "The Conference" clearly identifies a Norwegian church body that was the product of the split of the Scandinavian Augustana Lutheran Church into two main parts: the Swedish Augustana Synod, and the Norwegian [& Danish] Augustana Synod. Contributing to the difficulty in understanding what church bodies we are talking about is that less formal names are often used, and the most formal name for the Norwegian group was the Conference of the Norwegian-Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. But it appears that this was too much of a mouthful, and so by some Norwegians it was referred to as the Norwegian Augustana Synod, and by others as the Norwegian Danish Augustana Synod, and obviously from this report, its most common title must have been "The Conference," as the bold-faced sub-title suggests. That would explain why Ulvestad's reports based on the surveys referred to "The Conference! " so much. The above information appears to be consistent with the very brief information on ELCA (the main Lutheran body in the United States today -- and the product of many mergers) on the following website: http://www.elca.org/co/timeline/18.html I believe it is accurate to say that "the Conference" was the largest collection of Norwegian Lutheran churches in America from 1870 thru 1890, though there were 6-8 competing "synods" which were largely Norwegian Lutheran in character in America at that time. In 1890, a merger occurs between the Conference, the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Augustana Synod (which was actually a third body that resulted from the breakup of the Scandinavian Augustana Lutheran Synod - but had only 10-30 pastors in it), and the Anti-Missourian Brotherhood (which was a Norwegian group that had become part of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, but had broken away from that body). The official statistics submitted in June, 1899, show this new church body, called the United Norwegian Lutheran Church in America, numbered 1083 congregations, 225,605 souls, 126,872 communicants, and 661 parochial school teachers. Other helpful web sites include: http://www.luthersem.edu/archives/Collections/6-Augustana.asp which reports the following [with my editing]: Scandinavian Augustana Synod 1860-1890 The Scandinavian Augustana Synod was formed in 1860 from pietist Scandinavian elements in the new land, and initially was a union of Swedes, Norwegians, and Danes. However, the Scandinavian Augustana Synod split in 1870 leaving the Swedes as the core remaining members; the Swedes apparently continued to use the name 'Scandinavian Augustana Synod" but at some point it morphs into "Swedish Augustana Synod" and then is shortened to just Augustana Synod. As recounted above, the bulk of the Norse and Danes formed what was called the Norwegian-Danish Augustana Synod, but which had the longer title beginning with "the Conference ..." and apparently "the Conference" became the commonly used name for this main off-shoot that was dominated by Norwegians. Another website, http://www.arnold-ruddat.org/history/lutheran/norwegn.txt also utilized the "Conference" in reference to the splinter group from the old Scandinavian Augustana Synod. Further, the above website talks a lot about Hans Nielsen Hauge, a layman, who lived in Norway 1771-1824. He led a movement against many practices of the Norwegian State Lutheran Church, He spoke out against rationalism and proclaimed the need for a warm personal Christian experience. He denounced the dead orthodoxy and inconsistent lives of the pastors, wrote hundreds of books and tracts and taught his followers to be preachers. As Norwegians immigrated in small numbers to the U.S. in the early part of the 19th century, some were followers of Huage, and they established the Fox River Valley settlement in northern Illinois in 1834, and established the first Norwegian Lutheran congregation in the midwest. Eiling Eielsen, a Hauge lay minister, came to that settlement in 1839, was ordained, and started a congregation in the early 1840s. In 1846, Eielsen and his followers met at Jefferson Prairie (Clinton), WI. and organized the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (Eielsen Synod). It emphasized religious awakening and preaching by both laymen as well as ordained pastors. Its aim was to "unite the 'awakened' to work more effectively for the salvation of souls." I mention this because the Eielsen Synod becomes the Hauge Synod (more or less), and is a fairly large contingent of Norwegian Lutheran churches. They resist merging with other Norwegian Lutherans until 1917, when they merge with the United Lutherans, and the Norwegian Synod to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The ELC thus existed for nearly a half century as a unified synod of Norwegian Lutherans. A chart of important Lutheran bodies in America with dates: http://www.elca.org/archives/churchbodykey.html
Hi all, Today I got a real bargain. I got the 1976 Clay County Minnesota Biography Book at a used Book Store. Looks like it has never been used. :-) It has an index if anyone would like me to check names. Ardell has the southwest corner of Minnesota covered, soon I will have the Northwest corner. Margit

Hi Margit, Thanks for the e-mail. I got my family information cleared up. I had wrote in the e-mail to Richard that Torkil Olson was born in Bakke but I believe I made a mistake - he was born in Bakken, Hægebostad. Sorry for the mistake. Hi Lori: All of the three children were born at Eikeland in Heggbostad Sogn, Vest Agder. I don't know where the parents were born, but you probably would have to start in the Heggbostad area to find the paper trail to the parents birth places. While we are sharing stories of our ancestors, here is one from the Lyngdal Bygdebok about one of my 10th great grandfathers. A lot more interesting than simply names and dates: Lyngdal Bygdebok - Vol. 2 - p. 40 Store Røyskår: Åsulv (Somundsen?) of Royskår was taxed at one quarter of a farm in 1594 and mentioned on the tax rolls in 1617. He married Anna Pedersdatter of Skoland who held ownership later at Hellevann in 1646. Åsulv was involved in a fight in 1605 and received a knife wound in the arm by Bent Hårigstad. In 1610/1611, he was involved in an altercation in Vigringstad in Kvås. There he stabbed Iver Vigringstad in the hand and also gave Besse Vigringstad two knife wounds. Hei Roy! Ahhh that Lyngdal bunch was a wild bunch. I have from the Bygdebok stories of drinking and fighting, mostly between family members. :-)) Trust me the early ones over here in America were quite the bunch also. It looks as though I was looking at the wrong Tønnes - according to Harald and his findings. I do hope that I have not inconvenienced you because Tønnes on Budal looked like a good candidate. I believe that my friend will have to get the census and parish records to prove that the man on the 1865 census was indeed Tønnes Tollefs. instead of Tønnes Petters. as recorded. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f61001&gardpostnr=194&personpostnr=2156&merk=2156#ovre Perhaps the census taker assumed Tønnes was the son of Petter or the transcriptionist of the file, assumed the same. I had rejected this Tønnes before, even though the daughter and wife fit. I have learned another good lesson! Thank you again for the lookup. I know this will help someone else some day! Sincerely, Stephanie California

Strangely enouigh Budal is not in Bakke but in the neighbouring parish of Gyland. In the early 19th century a Torje Tollisen - probably from Kvina in Øvre Sirdal - settled at Budal and started to build out the farm . His eldest son Tolle Torgesen, sometimes referred to as Tollifar inherited the farm Tolle married Anna Jacobsdatter Mydland and the couple had four children; Tønnes, Jakob, Beate and and Martine. Anna died 03.12.1846 and Tolle re-married - Karin Jødestøl, but the marriage was hardly a harmonious union. Karin despised her step-children and refused to look after them. The marriage ended with Karin running amok in the cowshed and attacking Tolle with a manure pitchfork. ! The infuriated Tolle reacted by strangling his second wife with a silk scarf. He was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment and the children were looked after by neigbours in the parish, one at least, Jakob, emigrated to the USA. Derek - on a warm summer morning in Kristiansand

Hello Stephanie: Budal/Budahl is located in Gyland Sogn, Bakke Prgj., Vest Agder. I have the Gyland Book, and a new version is being prepared now. I looked in the Gyland Book under Budal, and it has Tønnes Tollisen b 13 Jan 1842, Christened 16 Jan 1842 and Confirmed in 1856. He emigrated to the USA in 1877. That is all it tells about Tønnes/Tomas under Budal. If you have any idea of where Annie Bentsdatter/Berntsdatter (?) was born it might tell under that farm who she married and the birth of Tøri. Tønnes has two sisters [one died young] named Tøri Tollisdatter but born in 1832 - 33. I can give you a rather large Ancestry report on the Tønnes Tollisen from Budal, if you can determine that is the Tønnes you are looking for. Tønnes' father is actually called Tollifar Torjusen from Handeland, Sirdal which is also part of Bakke before 1865 or so;. mother, Anne Jakobsdatter Mydland, both also from Gyland. I might be able to get some information from friends in Norway for you, as they have access to the Church records, and it may tell the birth of Tøri. I will see what I can find for you, but it will take a couple days, probably. [Roughs of the new version of Budal don't have any more.] Regards, Richard Peterson bolster3@aol.com wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. We started with finding Thora Tollofsen on the IGI (Familysearch.org) b. 8 May 1865 with parents Thomas Tollefson and Annie Bennsen. Thomas was really Tønnes who was b. 16 Jan 1842. The 1900 US census(Minneapolis) says he was born Jan 1840. Immigrated 1869. Also on the IGI, I find a Tønnes Tollefson b. 16 Jan 1842 to parents Tollev Torgjeson and Anna Jacobsdtr. He is recorded from Bakke, Vest-Agder. So this looks promising. On the 1865 Norway census I find a family on Budahl http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1045&kenr=003&bnr=0039&lnr=000 who seem to fit. Can anyone help me confirm that I am on the right track so I don't send him on a wild goose chase ordering the wrong films? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I don't know diddly about this area of Norway. Does anyone have the bygdebok? Posted on the Norway List also.
