His widow moved to ND in June 1874 with her parents, her two children, two brothers and sister. They settled next to Fingal Gulbrandson, Enger, on the Goose River. In 1875 Gjertrud married Fingal and Olaus Nilson , my grand father , took the name Enger. Thank you for the quick response. Ken Enger ps Olaus Engers land is still being farmed and owned by his grand son, Scott Enger ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Margit, In reference to above email you showed on the mail list: Just wanted to add some info on Fingal Enger if this party is interested. I have the book "A Saga of Two Cities 1881-1981 A History of Mayville-Portland" which is in Traill County, North Dakota. Page 5 says: "In 1872, a new influx of settlers came who continued the westward advance. Fingal Enger, John Amb and Ivar Fecher came on foot from Fargo, each carrying an ax and a few biscuits." Page 49 says: "The Little Forks congregation in Enger Township was organized by Pastor Hagboe, Dec. 28, 1877 at the Fingal Enger home." I've been working on compiling an index for this book so I can help other researchers looking for information in this area. I have not yet finished it, but did show Fingal Enger on those two pages thus far. There is a great website for Traill County, North Dakota which is located at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ndtraill/ Renae Larson (your hubby's 3rd cousin!) Phoenix, AZ P.S. I don't know if you heard from Ole Amund recently or not, but my aunt Ardyce Harstad passed away in Mayville on October 21st at age 87. Funeral was that Friday. If you want more information let me know.
Hi Renae! Traill County is just west of the county I live in, Norman County, Minnesota. There was a lot of going across the border for marriages etc. Let me know when you get the index done, I would love to see it. Lyle & Lorraine attended Ardyce's funeral. I also sent the information to Ole Amund and Arnfinn in Norway. :-)) Off to western ND for Lutefisk, Meatballs, Lefse and the trimmings early tomorrow! Dear Renae and Margit : Fingal Enger married my widowed g grand mother in 1875 .Gjertrud Persdatter Nyhus had two children at the time by her first huband, Olaus Nilson [ Enger ] my grand father ,born 30 Nov 1870 Freeman TWP, Freeborn co, Mn, died in ND 1944 and Caroline Nildatter born after her fathers death in 1872. She died from deptheria in 1881 and like most of the family is buried in Little Forks Luth Cem. Gjurtruds first huband was Nils Oleson, Aaberg, from Nord Aurdal, Oppland , Norway. He was born 12 April 1850 and came to Holden TWP, Goodhue CO, MN in April 1859 with his parents ,Ole Nelson ,Braten [born 1815] and Sigri or Sarah Syversdatter,Aaberg [born 1815 ], In Dec 1865 they moved to Freeborn Co, Freeman twp ,Section 30 ,MN. After the death of their only son ,they sold their farm and from here i have run into a "brick wall'. What i would like to find out is : [1] In 1880 census Caroline was not living with her Mother and step father and had not changed her name to Enger like her brother. She was living with her grand parent Peder and Kari Nyhus any ideas ?.[2] Nils Oleson is said to have died, age 22, by drowning in a well he was digging. Is this right? [3]What happened to Ole and Sarah Nelson after they sold their farm in 1872 ?[4] Where and when did they die ?. Please let me know if you have any answers .
