In searching a bit more i found a contrary opinion about the legend of Ridderspranget. Too bad, it was such a good tale! Olaf Ridderspranget Skårvangsola was first married to Ivar Gamle Gjæsling, but that marriage was annulled in 1164, probably because it was it occurred under force. The next year she had a daughter Ragnhild with Erling Kviden. The legend has it that she was raped by Erling. It is this occurrence that lies behind the legend about Ridderspranget In this famous legend it is not Erling Kviden who is the main actor but Sigvat Kviden, also know as Sigvat of Leirholar. But Sigvat lived from 1270 til 1340, thus over a hundred years after Ivar Gamle Gjæsling. A grandson of Ivar Gamle Gjæsling was also called Ivar (Ivar Unge Gjæsling). But he was also dead before Sigvat Kviden was born. Sigvat Kviden from Valdres was a very powerful man. He was king Håkon Magnusson's (1270 - 1319) close friend and adviser, one who had the power over life and death. He was one of those who accompanied the King to Copenhagen in 1309 to sign the peace treaty with the Danish king. He was a man who was remembered. It is perhaps not so strange that he received the reputation of making the jump at Ridderspranget.
