    2. My family is from the Torpa area. What valley would they be in? I get very confused when I look at a map of the area. Thanks - Mary Ann

It was part of the administrative district called Land. In 1874, Land was split in two: Nordre Land and Søndre Land. Torpa became a part of Nordre Land. Then Nordre Land was split 1st of January 1914 and Torpa became a separate municipality with 2.219 inhabitants. This lasted until 1st of January 1962, when Torpa and Nordre Land, plus Tranlia of Fluberg, was joined to form the new Nordre Land municipality. At that time Torpa had 2.620 inhabitants. If you use the map service provided by Statens Kartverk (The Norwegian Mapping and Cadastrial Authority) at http://ngis2.statkart.no/norgesglasset/default.html and do a search under "Place names" for Torpa, the map service will take you to an area called "Fagerlund" along the Synna river. There is a possibility that there are some historical maps of Torpa available somewhere, but I have not looked for them. I do not have any detailed knowledge about this part of Oppland, and do not know if there is a separate name for the valley which this is in. Hopefully we have someone with more detailed knowledge of the area reading this list. One thing is for certain though; Torpa is not in part of Gudbrandsdalen. Have a nice day! (Ha en fin dag!) John Morten
