If you go back to the original thread, you will find that the expression is used in this form only for one article related to Heidal and one related to Sjoa. You mention that 4 of the side valleys should be included in this expression, while the Wikipedia only uses it for these two. If you do a Google lookup on the same expression you will find that the expression "Gudbrandsdalene" in addition to the Wikipedia is used in: www.answers.com (straight copy of the Wikipedia article), www.homestayfinder.com (another copy of the Wikipedia article), www.karen.holtsmark.no (which is a private page dealing with art), http://heidal.komixcity.sk (copy of the Wikipedia article), http://spiderbites.about.com (copy of the Wikipedia article), www.absoluteastronomy.com (removed copy of the Wikipedia article), Out of the links shown here, there is only one Norwegian link, all the other sites are maintained outside the country. The single Norwegian site is a private site which would not constitute a source for this expression. I have consulted Norwegian Mapping and Cadastrial Authority (Statens Kartverk, see www.statskart.no). They have confirmed that the term "Gudbrandsdalene" in plural is unknown to them, and from what they can see no such term has been used. They also informed that the various valleys are defined as separate areas, and that they have also defined the geographical borders between them. Whether the set borders always are in accordance with the local traditions for them is, according to the same authority, a matter of recurring discussions with municipalities and local organisations. I asked the authority if the term "Gudbrandsdalene" could be used to describe a district, similar to Romerike, Ringerike, Helgeland etc. They did not see that there was any historical tradition for this, nor had they seen any need or request for that in more recent time. When I pointed them to the Wikipedia and the use of the valley name in plural they recommended that it should be changed. Following their advice I have therefore edited the texts in the Wikipedia accordingly. Heidal is a separate valley on its own with strong historical and cultural relations to its neighbouring Gurbrandsdalen valley. I understand that this is what you refer to when you say that you come from both Heidal and Gudbrandsdalen. Ha en fin dag! (Have a nice day!) John Morten
OK I overlooked the ene (plural) ending. I have never seen the Gudbrandsdalene either. Additional info about Heidal in the Wikipeda. Heidal belonged to Vågå/Waage/Vaage until 1907 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Morten Malerbakken" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 30, 2006 11:18 AM Subject: RE: [Opp] Valleys of Oppland > > >> -----Original Message----- >> From: Helge Hålåsæter [mailto:[email protected]] >> Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2006 9:26 PM >> To: [email protected] >> Subject: Re: [Opp] Valleys of Oppland >> >> Dear John Morten, >> I am from Heidal and I am from Gudbrandsdalen, too.
