This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Gulbrandsen, Roine Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hcC.2ACE/1342 Message Board Post: Sorry that I have not responded sooner. Thank you for your help and I do see a possibility with the family listed at http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=f60544&gardpostnr=129&sokefelt=skjul As for Nils Gulbrandsen Royne: His date of birth is believed to be February 22, 1865. This date comes from family information and from his ship departure/arrival information. I am seeking firm documentary evidence for a date of birth from marriage certificates, death certificates, immigration records, etc. His name in America is given at various times and places as Nils (or Nels) Gulbrandsen Royne (or Roine). His family's name became Royne by the time of his death. He immigrated from Norway to America in 1891, with a transit route that seems to have been Kristiania - Kristiansand - Hull, then to Liverpool, and then Liverpool - New York. He subsequently travelled across America to Tacoma, Washington which appears to have been his planned destination when he left Norway. Departure information from Kristiania From: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=32&filnamn=emikra1&sokpostnr=11#a0 114296 Year: 1891 Page: 138 Lline: 20 New family gr.: 1 Transaction date: 13.03.1891 Date of departure: 13.03.1891 Given name: Nils Last Name: Røine Marital status: (blank) Occupation: Arb. Sex: m Age: 26 (Note: year of birth would be around 1865) Domicile: Ø. Slidre Destination: Tacoma Line: Elster Ship: Montebello Freight (kr): 293 Payment info: Ppd. Nationality: (blank) Permission: T.sess. The route of the Montebello for this trip was Christiania - Christiansand - Hull. http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=monte. Norwegian emigrants were usually kept briefly at Hull and then departed for Liverpool by train, usually within 24 hours of arrival at Hull. http://www.norwayheritage.com/articles/templates/voyages.asp?articleid=28&zoneid=6 One of "corresponding ships" for the Montebello for this trip was the S/S Germanic leaving from Liverpool for New York with a NY arrival of March 27, 1891. Date of departure for the Germanic for this voyage not yet found. http://www.norwayheritage.com/t_corresp.asp?id=3071 New York arrival information from Liverpool >From list of immigrants found at Ancestry.com on September 27, 2006 (Line 25, Microfilm Serial M237, Microfilm Roll 315) Nils Roine Arrived: March 27, 1891 Born: Abt. 1865 (age given as 26) Male Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland Destination: USA Place of Origin: Norway Ship Name: Germanic Port of Arrival: New York 239 Nils Roine Laborer Forward 1 I do not have any information yet about his life in America from 1891 to 1900, when he shows up on the 10-year census (waterfront district) as a cook living aboard the Victorius Tacoma. Unfortunately, the U.S. censuses in which Nils is listed do not give a month or year of birth. As with many of our earlier censuses, only the age is listed and I have not always found the age listed in these to be a reliable way to determine the exact year of birth. It isn't unusual to see errors in age of several years (+/-) in any given census and from census to census. However, the date of enumeration for Nil's census information is as follows: 1900 census - June 11, 1900 (age 34, born around 1866) 1910 census - August 18,1910 (age 42, born around 1868) 1920 census - January 13, 1920 (age 53, born around 1867) Is there any information here that holds clues about Nils Royne for someone familiar with Norwegian genealogy? Feel free to communicate with me directly if you prefer. Thank you for your help. Gary Phillips [email protected]
