I need some help figuring out exactly who my g-g-grandfather is and where he came from … he is listed several different ways and I am not familiar enough with Norway to figure out if I have found the right records for him. The Bygdebok for Vanylven gives this listing (as transcribed for me from a gentleman in Norway): Hans Olsen Øyen from Vikstadlien, Skjåk, 1846-1894. He came to Vanylven to work on the road Aheim-Bryggja. According to his marriage record (from the Digitalized Parish Registers for Vanylven, Møre og Romsdal) he is listed as: 8 Nov 1868 - Hans Olsen Wigstad (?Vigstad) – Lien (?Øien) in Skiager, 22 years old, son of Ole Hansen (m. to Sophie Andersdatter of Yttre Strand) According to his son’s (my great-grandfather) birth record (again from Vanylven), the listing gives his name as: Hans Olsen Wigstadlien (of Skiager) – the record is from 20 May 1868, as his 1st son Hans was born before they married >From what I have been able to learn Skjåk is the newer form of Skiager, and is in Oppland, near Lom. With that I have gone to the digitalized parish registers for Lom (with copies for Skjåk in Lom) and found a birth record that may be my g-g-grandfather, but I am not sure. It reads: 20 Sep 1846, Hans, son of Ole Hansen Øyum (?Øienn or Øium) and Eldri Larsdatter Skjelkr (?) The birth was illegitimate and the parents married later that year, the marriage record reads: 13 Dec 1846 in Skiager: Ole Hansen of Øyinn, 31, son of Hans Hansen and Eldri Larsdatter of Skjelkr (?), 30, daughter of Lars Larsen (in Lom official parish register) With a slightly different version in the Skjåk in Lom parish register copy: 13 Nov 1846 (but placement of other records looks like it should be in December), Ole Hansen of Øyum, 31, son of Hans Hansen, and Eldri Larsdatter of Skjeller, 26, daughter of Lars Christiansen Can anyone assist me with this, and also in determining the farms he and his parents derived from (as they don’t seem to match farms listed in 1865 or 1900 censuses). Hi, In the Ættebok for Skjåk (relation or family book for Skjåk) under Øyom on page 275 lists a Hans, born 20/9/1846. It doesn't give a wife for him. His parents are Ola Hansen born 9/12/1815, married 15/11/1847 to Eldri Larsdtr. Hjeltar. She was the daughter of the unmarried parents widower Lars Kristiansen Hjeltar and Live Nilsdtr. Hans has three older half-brothers Ola born 2/5/1840 (mother:Anne Olsdtr.) and Sevald, born 26/9/1843 (whose mother was Livø Sevaldsdtr. Lund), Torstein, born 2/21845 (whose mother was Anne Iversdtr. Myren. He had two younger brothers Lars, born 18/1/1848 and Lars, born 3/1856. Ola's parents were Hans Hansen Øyom born 1788 married on 1/3/1815 to Embjørg Larsdtr., born 1790. Hans Hansen Øyom's parents were Hans Hansen Øyom, born 1743 and married to a Marit. That is as far back as it goes.
