OK, this is what I have about the passenger list. it comes in two pages. 1st page says at the top: this is the ship passenger list for the ship "Edda" which left Oslo in April 1871 and landed in Quebec. Among it's passengers are Peder Christiansen Gjestrumbakken & wife and son Emil Pedersen. The Gjestrumbakken is not mentioned on the passenger list. The next page is kind of strange. There are large numbers on the left hand side from 1 - 12. I thought they were representing the heads of the household, but it doesn't. Some names are by laborers, daughters, wifes, etc. Not every number is beside a farmer's name. Anyway, I will try to give a family above and a couple of names below as there are no families. My family will be in bold. Anders J. Skarten, age 41, farmer Johannes Jensen, age 64, his father wife Helene Indersdatter, age 61, his mother Marthe M. Johannesdatter, age 21, his sister Peder Christiansen, age 55, farmer Berte M. Johannesdatter, age 55, his wife Emil Pedersen, age 20, his son Karine Christensdatter, age 40, his sister Mathea Martinsdatter, age 6, his daughter Anders Johansen, age 19, farmer Carl Larsen, age 20, farmer Johannes Jensen has a large 8 by his name, Berte M. Johannesdatter has a 9, Karine Christensdatter has a 10, Anders Johansen has 11, and Carl Larson has 12. Mathea Martinsdatter is not Peder and Berte's actual daughter. We are thinking Mathea is award of the state of some sort or maybe even Karine's daughter and the transcriber got it wrong. In the 1880 census that I have found for Peder and Berte, it does have a Matia, age 25, says daughter, and single. Mathea would not be a Martinsdatter is being born to Peder & Berte. Mathea's father would be Martins somebody right???? Matia in 1871 is age 6 making her born in 1865. The 1880 census says that she is 25, making her born in 1855. So there is 10 years difference there. She is not in the 1900 census as there are no 1890 census for South Dakota. She must have gotten married or possibly have died at an early age. I looked something up on the internet about the ship "Edda" and it said that 1870 and 1871 were not transcribed yet. Are there by any chance any ship manifests in the local library? I live in a big city and the library downtown has a big genealogical room. We also have a local LDS church that has some things, but I haven't been there yet. I don't know if they specialize in only one area or if they have a lot of everything. I guess I could call there and see what they might have. I don't know how the person got this piece of paper in the first place. I know it has been in the family for quite some time, I just acquired it in August of 2006. This is all I have, any help is always and greatly appreciated. Leah ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Leah, For starters, in the 1865-telling, we find Mathea Martinsdatter living with Peder Christiansen and his family at Gjestrumbakken. She is identified as "Lægdslem", which means "welfare recipient." So it would appear that the family is taking responsibility for Mathea and including her in their emigration, rather than passing her on to another family. ((If we dug for Mathea's birth registration, I wouldn't be surprised to find a family connection between her parents and the Peder Christiansen family.)) I searched for every possible name / combination I could think of for each person on your passenger list, leaving Kristiania and Oslo (separate lists). Nothing..... Here is the scoop on "Bark Edda" from Kristiania to Quebec: "http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=eddaa" Looking at the passenger list found on line (click on VIEW IMAGE for page #23) "http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-119.01-e.php?&sisn_id_nbr=765&interval=20&&PHPSESSID=e0d070d666b15626f2c01b24d4286f96" I see that the large numbers to the left appear to be identifying 'groups' of people traveling together. For example, if you look at #9, there is a large paren mark encompassing Peder, Berthe, and Emil. Then #10 combines Karine Christensdatter and Mathea Martinsdatter. On the right side of page 23 (next image), it identifies Mathea as 'idiot'... this would explain why she was a welfare recipient in Norway. It says Karine is Peder's sister and Mathea his daughter, but I agree that there is a good possibility that Mathea is Karine's daughter. I don't see any connection between these five members and the other passengers listed. Have a nice day!
