Iowa. There was a widowed Johanna Taylor in Corinth township of that county for the 1880 US census and perhaps that is a match to the Johanna Andersen b. 1829 you listed above. If yes, then look again at the 1880 census. She lists 6 children all born in Wisconsin during a time period of at least 13 years. The same Wisconsin born children appear in 1870 in Emmet Co. Iowa but the parents (both born Norway) appear as Olson and Jane Taylor. So you have several possibilities of WHERE these persons ended up. Thats great info that it's only a decleration of leaving. I know due to the census records that I did find that they got here in 1851. So they must have left shortly after April 9th. I just wish I knew what happened to Anders Christoffersen and his crew after they got here. Thank you for your help Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: thoraway Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.scan-balt.norway.counties.oppland/3326.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You found those names on the Digitalarkivet database entitled "Utflytta frå Gran 1825-1900 og Jevnaker 1837-1901" -- http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=granutfl&gardpostnr=6882&sokefelt=skjul That data base is NOT a passenger list. That is an extraction of the Jevnaker and Gran church records of when people informed the church that they were planning to leave the parish for another destination. In the case of these particular persons it lists "Amerika" as where they were headed to. Norwegian ports didn't really start keeping records of people emigrating from their country until the mid-1860s. Prior to 1850 most Norwegian ships headed for North America sailed to the port of New York. From 1850 to about 1854, more and more ships sailed to Quebec, Canada. The unfortunate thing about this is that the National Archives of Canada [NAC] did not begin the archiving of passenger lists for the port of Quebec, before in 1865. Other Canadian ports began archiving even later ~ Halifax, Nova Scotia - 1881 and Saint John, New Brunswick - 1900. There are no surviving records prior to these dates. This means that for the great majority of the Norwegian emigrants between (1850) 1853 and 1865, there are no existing passenger lists. I think you've got something here. My grandfather was Anton A Skaaden b 27 April, 1863 in Norway; mother Marit b (about) 1832 d 1922 in Day County, SD USA. They immigrated to USA sometime in 1880, first settling in MN USA, then homesteading in Day County SD USA. This is really exciting for me! As I said, I am a newcomer to this, and didn't really expect anything to come of it. If you find anything on Anton's father (Marit's husband) please let me know; and thank you again for your response. Arbeider pa gaarden = worker (laborer) on the farm. Krs probably refers to the specific parish within Vestre Toten in which they were baptized. I'm not sure which of the three churches this would refer to, but I rather think it would be either Kolbu or Aas rather than Eina, so I would look in the records of those two churches first. I hope this helps. But someone with more local knowledge may be able to provide more definitive answers. There is more information on Toten at http://www.totenlag.org/ including pictures of the churches. Good luck with your research!
