Thanks for the information. I guess I am still confused because I think Knut Olsen was married twice and I was wondering which wife was the mother of which children. That is why I was trying to find the dates of his marriages. Guess I will see what I can find out at the Valdres Samband stevne this year. Hi, I was trying to find information on one of my ancestors. I found him in the 1900 Norwegian census. He is living on the Bakkene farm in Søndre Aurdals. His name is Knud Olsen, born on the Bøen farm. Also living there was his wife, Ingrid Olsdatter and his children Ole, Georg, Gulborg Kristine, Olav and Kolbjørn. He was marrried previously to a Kjersti Olsdatter. I was wondering if there is anyplace to search for the dates of his marriages and his death date. Thanks, John Peterson

Hei Margit, Thanks for the speedy reply. I don't have access to the birth records at this moment but I will start searching. The official death record lists Bertha's second marriage name and Haggen as her middle (maiden) name. The oral family history has it that Bertha's father was a man named Gilbert Hanson (maybe Gulbrand Hansen?) I haven't been able to find any trace of him either. Again oral family history says that Berth's mother married a man named Andrew Hagen after she arrived in the USA. I have seen documentation of a name change from Andrew Eriksen to Andrew Hagen that occurred sometime before May of 1890. I have found no marriage record which makes me think that they may have been married in Norway. There is a "Kirkebok" marriage record for an Andreas Eriksen of Klethehagen to a Lisa Olsdatter that occurred on May 24, 1879 at the Segaard church. This couple subsequently had three children in Norway that do not appear in US records for Lisa and Andrew Hagen, which make me hesitant to think that Lisa Olsdatter was my great great grandmother. What I really hope to find is a birth / baptism record for Bertha and an immigration record for her and Lisa it establish a positive link across the ocean to their families in Norway. Thanks so much for your time. Gary Margit wrote: >Hi Gary, >Do you have a copy of her death certificate? That would state her name. How >about her obituary? Hi Gary, Do you have a copy of her death certificate? That would state her name. How about her obituary? Also any copies of birth certificates from her children? Marriage certificate? When did she come to America? What was her father's name? Did she have any siblings? Have you found birth information on them? Have you found her mother in the 1865 census of Norway? or the 1875 census of Norway? When did she come to America? Margit - I think I just found my great grandmother's brother but I guess I want you to affirm it since I do not read Norwegian and I am guessing alot. Eli Syversdatter had a brother Ole. Ole came to America and was a close neighbor of his niece, Maria, after she married. For Overhalla, on page 216, I found Ole Sivertsen, age 29, from Lands Praesteg.; wife Hellen Olsdatter, age 26, from Lands Praesteg; son, Stener Olsen, aged 6, Lands Praesteg.; and, Brede Olsen, aged 1, Overhalla. All of the names and ages match except for Brede. I assume he died between age 1 and when the family first appears in the U.S. census. After Ole's name it says "Tjenestekari", what does that mean? After Hellene's name it says "Tjenestep", what does that mean? Thank you - Mary Ann
Hi Margit - Yes, those were my great great grandparents and my great grandmother. I never would have looked for them with that spelling. I have much to learn about Norwegian genealogy. I looked at my records about emigration to America and this is what I found. Ellen's obituary states she and the family came to the United States in 1869, going to Wisconsin for one year then on to South Dakota. No towns were mentioned. Christian's obituary states he and the family came to America in 1869, living first in Wisconsin and then on to South Dakota. Maria's obituary says she came to America with her family in 1866. Her sister Hanna's obituary says she came to America with her family in 1864. Again, thank you for your help. Mary Ann
Hi Mary Ann, I will give you one hint, when you reply to an email, leave part of the original email with it. I help many every day and forget who and what I help. :-)) Did they have more children in South Dakota? Those birth records are online here before 1900 if so: <http://www.state.sd.us/applications/ph14over100birthrec/index.asp> Margit > Hi Margit - > Yes, those were my great great grandparents and my great grandmother. Hei Margit, I ask your help in finding any records for my great grandmother. Her given name was Bertha or Beate. Her family named may have been Olsen, Eriksen, Hagen, Bjøsletten, or Bjørnsletten. She was born on 13 April 1875 near Biri, Oppland, Norway. Her mother's name was Lisa Olsen and, according to our records, she was born on 14 December, 1854. I have searched at several of the sites you list but there appears to be no baptism records for the year 1875 in the area around Biri. I am hoping that you have access to records not yet on the internet and can help me in my search. Thank you for your time. Gary Peterson

Sorry about the lack of information. My mind got ahead of my fingers. I would like to know where the farm Engeset is located, especially in relation to the Skarlien farm. I know Eli and her husband Christian Oleson - sometimes called Christian Oleson Opsal married 28 May 1855 in Torpa. I would like to know the dates of birth for her parents - Syver Sorensoen and Guri Nielsdatter. I would also like to know if she had any brothers and sisters, their names and when they born. Eli Syversdatteer Engesith/Engeset was born 9 Nov. 1834. I have a note from someone that in 1864 the famly moved from Torpa, Land to Overhalla, a little east of Namsos, north of Trondheim. I do not know if this is where they were living when they emigrated to the United States. Thank you for your help - Mary Ann
Hei Mary Ann, Did they have two daughters named Hanna and Marie before 1865? If so, here they are in Overhalla in Nord Trondelag in the 1865 census of Norway. Says they were both born in Lands Prjg. <http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f6174 4&variabel=0&postnr=1392&fulle=true&spraak=n> Do you know when they emigrated from Norway? Have you found them leaving Norway? The more information you give, the more we can help. :-)) Margit > > Sorry about the lack of information. My mind got ahead of my fingers. Hi Mary Ann, What type of information are you looking for? What part of Oppland was she from? Margit > I am seeking information on my great great grandmother Eli Syversdatter > sometimes called Eli Syversdatter Engesith. I am seeking information on my great great grandmother Eli Syversdatter sometimes called Eli Syversdatter Engesith. She was born 9 November 1834. Her parents were Syver Sorensen and Guri Nielsdatter. Would appreciate any help. Thank you - Mary Ann <cematapey@aol.com>
My great grandfather, Christian Oleson, was born 29 Oct. 1829. I think it might have been on a farm called Opsal. His parents were Ole Pedersen and Marit Hansdatter. My great grandfather sometimes went by Christian Oleson Opsal and that is the name on his tombstone in South Dakota. He married Eli Syversdatter on 28 May 1855 in Torpa. Would appreciate any information about him and/or his family. Thank you - Mary Ann <cematapey@aol.com>
Thank you Torleif for providing this information, and offering to have it translated. Someone had sent me this previously, and I had it translated by a Norwegian living here in Canada. Previously, you made this posting below, but I cannot find the link to the 'Slektsforskerbasen' that you mention? Can you give directions? Thanks, Garth I'm new on this list, and just want to ask if you know of this web site of the DIS genealogy organistation: http://www.dis-norge.no/genress/lang.php?todo=lang_e It's a web links database with over 8300 genealogy links. Here you'll find the following information categories, and also the page 'Slektsforskerbasen' (genealogists database) with names and email of almost 5000 researchers, and which county/municipality in Norway they are doing research.
Thank you for the information. Mary Ann
