Hi Robert, Thanks much for the site, I imagine the 1994 edition would be the best to purchase. I thought I would add to my collection. A. Brandt and J___ Svend___. They were in the 1880 census in Halstad -- A. (Andrew) Hawkins, wife Sigri, children Berit, Christian, Julius, Siya, and Edward (Edward born 1879). Next to them on the census were Henry Hawkins and his mother Berit Hawkins (making Henry and Andrew brothers). The next family on the census is Erik Brandt and his daughter Julia. There is a Henry Hawkins that died in 4-14-1932 in Norman county. That really is the extent of my knowledge. Pat Quesnel +++++++++++ Hi Pat, I found some interesting things. Margit Death of Halstad's First Postmaster Erik K. Brandt was born May 1 (can't see the other number if there is one), 1848, at Valders, Norway, being one of a family of 8 children. He came to Decorah, Iowa, when about twenty-one years of age. Four years later he was married to Miss Hawkins and moved to the Red River Valley, which was at time in the infancy of its development. Here he took homestead which included the land upon which is now located the village of Halstad. A few years after coming here, his wife died, leaving him with a daughter, Julia, three and a half years old. This daughter died at the age of 23. Mr. Brandt was again married to Ingeborg Lee and to this union two children were born, Clarence and Myrtle, the former passing away about four years ago. Mr. Brandt had always taken an active part in the upbuilding of this community. He was the first postmaster of Halstad and also one of the earliest business men, having conducted a store on the site where the new State Bank building is now being erected and later on the corner where the Lovsnes & Sjordal hardware store is now located. During the later years he lived quietly on his old homestead on the banks of the Red river, his daughter Myrtle, being with him to make his last days cheerful and pleasant. During the last few weeks he had not been feeling well, gradually growing worse, until on Monday, July 11th, he became confined to his bed. Doctors were called but medical aid could do nothing and on Wednesday morning of last week he passed away. Halstad Journal Based on my years of research in Norway, yes Erik and Sigri/Sigrid would be sister brother. I have found the family in Norway in the 1865 census. <http://draug.rhd.isv.uit.no/ftsoek/ftsoek.asp?kommando=bosted&ftaar=1865&sp raak=engelsk_britisk&kommnr=0543&kretsnr=0004&bostnr=0009&leilnr=000> Do you have a birth year for Sigri? Hei Margit, Here is a short explanation of the various lags (organizations of descendents of immigrants from Norway); what the lags mean; what they can do for you; the enjoyment you can have by joining the lag pertaining to your Norway roots. Visit site www.fellesraad.com This will show all the lags, their presidents and genealogists. The lags have been busy accumulating microfilms of the church records for their area, michrofiche of the 1801 census, bygdebøker (church records of the various farms and those who lived on them of certain areas), family books written by members, etc. There will be a room set aside for use of these resources and someone to assist you in finding records pertaining to your ancestor(s). Each year the lags have separate stevnes (meetings, some have as much as 7 lags meeting together) held in one of the upper midwest states, lasting 2-3 days. Here you will have programs put on by the stevnes relating to the lag, usually seminars, crafts, budads worn by the members who have them, and lots of ethnic foods. All that's required is joining and paying the dues required. Do look into these lags - there are 31 of them in operation, and most likely you will find one dealing with the place(s) from which your ancestor(s) emigrated. If you have more questions, do contact me, or the head of all these lags, Marilyn Somdahl at the main site, www.fellesraad.com or at somdahl2@usfamily.net Margit wrote: > > Hi Betty, > Perhaps you would like to explain for those who are new to Norwegian > genealogy just exactly what a Lag is and what Lags are available for the > Oppland area to join? I'm sorry about that Larissa. I must have an outdated brochure. Please do look at the main organization's page, www.fellesraad.com to find out more about the different organizations, including Land. Charles Hauck is the current president of the Landingslag. His email is chauck@rea-alp.com Maybe I mistyped Carol Olson (genealogist) email. Hi Betty, Perhaps you would like to explain for those who are new to Norwegian genealogy just exactly what a Lag is and what Lags are available for the Oppland area to join? Also what they can do to help with research once they join? I am sure there are some who are wondering. :-) Thanks, Margit > > Carol, contact the genealogist for the Valdres Samband Lag, Be Gunnelson > at begun@uslink.net > > Betty

Margit - After some Internet searching, I see that the Angelo did go to England from Oslo. now I will have to find the ship that took the Bålerud family to America. Thanks again. Carol
Betty - Thank you for the email address of the Valdres Samband genealogist. When I joined that group you yourself were most helpful in providing me with wonderful additions to my family tree. Thanks! Carol
Margit - Thank you so much for this link on my Bålerud line. Do you know if the ship Angelo went directly from Oslo to NYC, or did it go through Hull, England, as so many did? I am delighted to have this information! Mange takk. Carol

Hi all, I'm researching Ole Hansen Berge, b. 1858, who married Kari Torgersdatter Gulliksrud, b. 1858, both from Gran, Oppland, Norway. They emigrated to Iowa in the 1880's. Other farm names associated with their families are Molstad, Molden, Dynna, Bjorge, Norden, Strand, Guldeneiet, Klovstad, etc. Hope we can help each other discover more about our families. Hi Gary, Glad to help whenever I can. First off, do you have copies of their death certificates from the state? How about obituaries from their deaths? Obituaries give so much information. If you know the county they died in or township, there are many willing to do lookups if you do not live near Minneapolis, MN on obit's. Sound like you may need to do some more homework, before jumping over the pond to Norway. ? Margit > > Hei Margit, > > Thanks for the speedy reply.
