    1. [Oppland] Brumenddal
    2. Betty Rockswold
    3. Does anyone have anything on Brumenddal, south of Lillehamar? There was supposed to be a child named Christian Martin Christenson in Brumenddal, maybe born in 1877. Christian had a half brother Olaf (later Olaf called himself Olaf Gordon). Any help will be appreciated. Betty Rockswold bettylou@spacestar.net

    1. [Oppland] Brickwalls...hang in there.....they do Tumble Down!! :-)
    2. Margit
    3. Hei all, I have had two brickwalls with my mother's grandparents, one came tumbling down fast.......so hang in there and be flexible on dates, names, spellings etc. I know this is my family without any church records to verify. Things just fit together quite well, but not well enuf a few years ago. I got the following message from a gentleman in Hedmark, and he did not think this was my family either, the clicker was my ggrandmother's sister marrying Rikart Simonsen and emigrating to America. I have reference in Norway to them leaving Loiten, Hedmark and reference in America at Hawley, Minnesota of my ggrandmother's sisters daughter being born in Norway, father: Rikard Simonsen. I do not know yet what happened to Rikard and one child, but will get there I am sure someday. What I was told by the certified death certificate on my ggrandmother was that she was born on May 8, 1845 in Norway to Ole Olsen Mattisund and Olai Engebretsdatter. So, when this wonderful person emailed me this information in December of 2000, I kept it and thought my search was fruitless. Today, I found my gggrandmother listed as Olia Mathisrud when she emigrated from Norway, Olia Olsen in the 1885 census of Hawley Village in Clay County Minnesota and in 1910 dying as Olia Engebretsdatter. Good enuf for me! Margit..............happy as hell.... Bjørn Gunnar Lindalen He sent me the following: Hello Margit Enclosed you find Ole Hansen Mathisrud ancestors, and his descendants, which lists an Oliv Engebretsd as mother and Eline Johansd as her daughter living with her on the Eneberg Farm. 1. [Oppland] Solien / Bakken / Toten
    2. Margit
    3. Carl A. and Oliane (Jensdatter Sethney) Solien Carl was born in Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway on October 18, 1858 to Andreas Hansen and Maria Olsdatter. In the 1865 census of Norway he was living with his parents on the Bakken farm in Vestre Toten and his brother Ole C. Andreasen, age 10 and his sister Helmine Andreasdatter, age 13. When Carl was 19 years old, he decided to come to America. On June 27, 1878, he boarded the steamship ³Angelo². Before arriving in America, he decided to change his name from Andreasen to Solien, which is a farm name in Norway. His destination was Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He more than likely took the train to Lake Park, Minnesota and then walked to Flom, Minnesota, to visit with the Dorseth¹s, who came from the same area in Norway. He traveled on to Crookston, Minnesota, where he filed a claim for his land in Section 26, of Home Lake Township. There he made a dug-out for a home and went to southern Minnesota and worked for a year. When he returned to his claim, he learned from his nearest neighbor, Mrs. Jens Huseby, that Indians had been living in his dug-out, and she had been bolting her doors while the Indians were there. Carl worked on the Martin Kirkeby farm until he was married in 1881 to Oliane Jensdatter Sethney. Oliane was born in Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway, north of Oslo, about 8 miles. She was the oldest of 7 children born to Jens A. Anderson and Marie Johannesdatter. In the 1865 census of Norway, she was living with her parents on the Gjerdingen farm in Vestre Toten. The following siblings were also living there: Johan Andreas Jensen, age 3 Marthinus Jensen, age 1 Johanne Maria Jensdatter, age 7 Later the family moved to the Sethne Farm. At the age of 24, Oliane decided to leave Norway and departed June 3, 1880 on the steamship ³Angelo². 3. Martin and Berte (Anderson Amlien) Kirkeby Martin Olson was born on June 24, 1850, (there is some confusion on his date of birth as it is also the possibility of July 7). He was born at Kirkebyhaugen, which is near Hakadal in Akershus County, Norway. His parents were Ole Olson and Marthe Carine (Karine) Larsdatter. When he was four years old, in 1854 he left Norway with his parents, a 11 year old half-brother, Jens Christian; and his baby brother Anton. They began the long ocean voyage to America. His mother Karine, and presumably his brother, Anton, died of illness on the ship before reaching Quebec, Canada, where the Norwegians immigrating to American in 1854 landed. (Per Vesterheim Gen. Center, Madison, WI) After their arrival his father, along with his two sons traveled to the United States, first to Wisconsin. Here they remained for a couple of years, then they moved on to Glenwood township in Winneshiek County, Iowa, where they would locate near many other Norwegian immigrant families. Martin¹s father Ole remarried before 1860 to a lady named Magnild, who was 12 years older than Ole. She took on the responsibility of raising Martin and Jens. The boys worked on the farm and attended school and church when possible as most children of their time and background did. Martin is still shown as living with his father and step mother in the 1870 census as a farm laborer, and was using the name Kirkeby, the name of the village or farm from which they had left in Norway. Jens (John) took on the name of Olson. Berte (Bertha) Anderson Amlien was born on August 18, 1848, in Vestre Toten, Oppland County, Norway. She came to the United states with her parents (possibly Peter and Ragnild Anderson but not proven) in 1870 and settled in Winneshiek county, Iowa. After a short stay in Wisconsin, her family joined the Washington Prairie Congregation where the Kirkeby's were already members. This is where Bertha and Martin met and on November 26, 1872, they took out a marriage license. They were married on December 7, 1972 by Rev. Vilhelm Koren, pastor of that congregation. Four years after they were married they set out for the new west, arriving in Norman county where they homesteaded the farm stead that has been in his home since. ( The Kirkeby farm was sold in April 2002 to Roger and Kris Hamernik who are currently remodeling the home and hope to move in by August). Here they shared the pioneer days both in building up a home and in building the community and church. Bertha passed away on April 23, 1918 and Martin passed away on November 12, 1941. They are both buried at Wild Rice Cemetery. Martin and Bertha joined Wild Rice just a few years after it was started. They were faithful and supportive members, having served on the board and various committees. They also too an active part in shaping it¹s policies during its formative and later years. Martin was also a member of the Wild Rice Electric Board, a past president of the Flom Co-op Creamery board and the Flom Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He also served on the school board and the Flom township board. Martin was one of the first members of the first school board members of Woodland Nook School. The Kirkeby's donated land for the first Woodland Nook school to be located on. Martin and Bertha were engaged in farming for over 45 years. Martin and Bertha were the parents of eight children; two died in infancy, Carl, Albert, Ole, Lewis, Johanna (Thorvold Thorson) and Julia (Amlien). No records to confirm where the two who died in infancy are buried. Editor's Note: Berte Amlien was born to Anders Hansen and Johanne Olsdatter Amlien in Vestre Toten, Norway. She was a sister to Helene (Amlien Dorseth) and Ole Grefsrud, his son Olaf immigrated to America and was the father of Palmer Grefsrud. Because Ole moved onto the Grefsrud farm when he married, he dropped the Amlien name and took the farm name of Grefsrud. Martin Olesen Kirkeby was born on July 7, 1850 and Baptized on July 22, 1850, in Norway according the to Churchbook's in Norway.

    3. E. N. BJERKE (1856-1948) Even N. Bjerke was born at Toten, Norway, in 1856. He came to Minnesota when he was seven years old. His parents, Nils and Christine Bjerke, settled near Spring Grove, Minnesota on March 10, 1878. He was united in marriage to Anna Sophia Johnson, of Astrander Minnesota. The BJerkes farmed for three years in Mower County. then moved by ox team to Hagen township, Clay County, where they took a homestead of a hundred and sixty acres. He later bought more land west of his farm near the south branch Wild Rice River. He made many improvements and had a well-kept and profitable farm. Getting the farm's produce to market was always a big job. One spring, Bjerke, and his neighbor, Hans Kaushagen, decided to drive their stock of thirty-five head, into the yard of Moorhead. They drove a buggy with supplies. while sons, Albert and Helmer Bjerke. Edwin and Eli Kaushagen rode horses to keep the cattle moving. It took two days from the Borup area to Moorhead. Crossing the railroad tracks in Moorhead an engine plowed into the herd but none were killed. A big steer, sold that day. brought 5c a pound. They were fortunate to arrive that day because the next day it rained many inches. In 1908, the Bjerkes moved to a quarter section in Wild Rice township, Norman County west of Twin Valley, where they farmed untii retiring in 1914. Even was always interested in trees. Four of their children lived to celebrate their own golden wedding anniversaries during their years together. Transportation changed a lot in Even's time. He came to Northern Minnesota by oxen, used horses for his farm work and driving to town, bought a Maxwell car (with side curtains), then a Mitchell which was enclosed, and in later years drove a modern Chevrolet. They were members of the Lutheran Church, the Jevnaker. near Borup, and later‹ the Hauge in Twin Valley until the union of the churches in 1920 to Zion of Twin Valley. 1. [Oppland] *NEW* Passport records online, all states, 1809-1887
    2. Margit
    3. >From the Ships List with permission. Margit Thanks to hard-working volunteers Pam, Cindy G and Cindy L, I have recently put the following Passport records online on NaturalizationRecords.com (http://NaturalizationRecords.com/usa/ ) Passport applications are often a valuable source of genealogical information. NARA has passport applications from October 1795-March 1925. The U. S. Department of State has passport applications from April 1925 to the present. Some immigrants applied for passports to return home to visit family or friends. These records usually give a place of birth or at least the destination (which is often the home town) The first passport issued in USA was dated July 1796. My first new database is an Index to Special Passports 1829- 1887. This is for all states. http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1829-87a.shtml Next is an Index to the Register of Passport Applications 1809- 1817 for all states, found at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1809.shtml At present 1809 and 1810 are online, the remaining years will follow as quickly as Cindy G and I get them transcribed. I have also added new surnames beginning with G, H and L to the existing Register of Passports 1834-1843 at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_a.shtml These are for all states. G Surnames are at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_g.shtml H Surnames are at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_h.shtml L Surnames are at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1834_l.shtml Surnames A to F were already online, and the rest will follow as quickly as they are transcribed. All records on NaturalizationRecords.com are FREE to use, please let each page load completely then scroll down to find the names. The index to Passport Records and an explanation of Passport Records as a research tool is at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports.shtml You can pass this message on to anyone you think might be interested, and if you find an ancestor on any of my projects please let me know!
