Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum www.vesterheim.org sells copies of some great topographic maps that show old farm locations in Norway. Topographic Series Our most detailed maps are ideal if you want to find your family farm in Norway - this is the series for you! The series includes 727 maps covering all of Norway. Additionally, for a charge, we will do research to make certain the information you provide is accurate so you can order the correct map. The scale is 1:50,000. Each map covers a 7 x 10 US mile area." Because the maps are so large scale, it is a bit difficult to find which area you want if you don't know the name of the farm. I've seen other websites as well where you could order the maps, but I can't seem to find them right now.
Hei Chris, Are these people related to you? He was here before 1880 in the USA, if he had a 1 year old daughter in the 1880 census of Minnesota/Federal. Naturalization Papers you can order. Arnesen, Anthon County:Swift Reel:3 Code:10 Volume: B Page: 7 Document Type: Final Papers Years: 1883 -1897 Several years ago, the Iron Range Research Center purchased the entire set of microfilmed Minnesota County Naturalization Records (87 counties) from the Minnesota Historical Society. Because the record set was one of the most widely used records in the Iron Range Research Center, it quickly became apparent that the indexes to the records were incomplete and often inaccurate. Conrad Peterzen, a Research Center volunteer, resolved to make a new comprehensive index to the entire set. His index recorded the name of each person requesting citizenship and included the following information: spouse's name, county of residence, microfilm reel reference, print volume, and page number. The index also includes records of people who were denied citizenship and those who never completed the process. The present version of the index contains all of the 87 counties and over 500,000 records. The fact that spouses are listed in the index can be especially important because before 1922, women became citizens through their husbands and did not have their own papers. This index provides the necessary information for researchers to access the original papers in the microfilm collection. The microfilmed papers contain most of the relevant genealogical information, i.e., dates and places of birth and marriage. Note: While most of the locations refer to counties, the following names are cities in St. Louis County: Ely, Duluth, Hibbing, and Virginia. Where exactly was he living in the 1900/1910/1920 Census in America? It tells there when he immigrated to America. This looks like his death certificate, do you have a copy of his obit? or his wife's? It is in Swift County, where Benson is and he was in the 1880 census records. Hi, Margit - >> Yes, four of my great grandparents came from Oppland, so I am >> researching: >> Ole Trondsen Kjorstad(Kjoster)/Revling - Aurdal Parish, Valdres >> Ingri Bergum - Skrautval Parish, Valdres >> Naes/Bentsen/Baalerud - Gran Parish, Brandbu, Hadeland >> Anders Nielsen Strande - Aas Parish, Vestre Toten At this time I am concentrating on the Naes/Bentsen/Baalerud line in Hadeland. In the past month I have overcome a brick wall - YEA!!!! My gggrandmother Anna Pedersdatter Baalerud came to America in 1881 as a widow with seven children. The family lore has always said that she came to Renville Co, MN, "to be near family", but I have known just who that family was - until now. Her siblings and half-sibling along with her mother Elina Amundsdatter were in the area. Now that I know Elina's name I have been reading Kirkeboks from the FHL to try to put the family together. Elina was born in August of 1805 on the Egge farm in Hadeland. She had two children - including Anna - before she married Gulbrand Olesen who died in Norway in 1865. Fascinating, but very time-consuming. I have found over the years that membership in a Lag or in county genealogical societies can be most beneficial. If any listers are familiar with these names, I would appreciate contact with you! Thank you. Carol in Colorado >
I am not sure where he is born, I only found the marriage record. I was hoping that some one had a book from that area and could tell me if there was anything about him, he really has me at a road block. Thank you for trying. Family legend has it that the name originated in Roman days, and is Latin for grain. I've noticed a few other farm names in Oppland ending in "um" or "em," and I wonder if anyone else has an explanation. Norway did not have any Roman period, so I doubt the Latin origin. 'Gran' is the Norwegian word for spruce and sometimes fir and I would think that is the origin. Alas, the Oluf Rygh site is down at the moment, so I can't confirm that. The.um' and '-om' endings usually indicate the dative (indirect object) form of the word in Old Norwegian. The '-em' is usually a shortening of 'heim' (home) however sometimes the '-um' can also indicate an original 'heim' Nothing is simple, is it? Olaf Note: Olaf is a member of this list if you have more questions. > I'm trying to find out about people named Granum from Nordre Aurdal, > Oppland, some of whom migrated to Minnesota. Hei! I've just checked Olu Rugh, buthe doesn't help much. For one thing he doesn't record a Granum in Nordre Aurdal. Heonly shows 2 in Søndre Land, one each in Vestre Toten, Østre Toten and Vestre Gausdal. Of the two in Toten he implies that the '-um' is a shortened form for 'heim' As to the others he maintains that they are new names but in one case a reference to the dative form. All too frequently, Oluf Rygh disappoints. Olaf. > Family legend has it that the name originated in Roman days, and is Latin > for grain.
