Maggie, I may have some help for Marilyn. I have some of my relatives who migrated from Heggenes to Ringbu and I believe there was a Gulbrand Engebretsen. I'm at work now and can't check until tomorrow (Fireman), But I think I may have a copy from the parrish records that I can forward. Could you please give her my email address? I'll write more about them later. I can also do some work on his parents, but it will probably be a while, since I'm extremely busy at work these days. In the meantime, you should check out Nanna Egidius's Kaldor Farm website and look at the genealogical database she has. She traces much of Gulbrand's ancestry there (she spells his farm name "Tullia"). Please take a look and let me know what additional information you are particularly interested in. I have ancestors from both the Ringebu and Gran area..Family names connected to farm names from Hadeland/Gran area are Melbostad (family members still living there), Blegeneie, and Egge Gubrandson (Gilbertson). The name Pederson was also used prior to taking the farm names. From Ringebu/Favaang area Myhre, Romas, and Segelstad/Seiestad are the main names. This family also related to a famous woodcarver named Kirsten Listad and they have donated many items to the Maighaugen museum in Lillehammer. I too have the book by Einer Hovdhaugen. I am particularly interested in information about my great grandfather Anders P. Melbostad (Anders Pederson) who emmigrated and last settled in Wolverton/Wilkins Co. Minnesota and then Barnesville/Clay County Minnesota. He died in 1907 and wife Siri (Sigrid) in 1905. -----Original Message----- From: Peter J. Hello List, Margit invited those of us who joined the list last week to summarize our research interests. Five of my eight paternal great great grandparents were from Oppland: Peder Arnesen BAKKE (1817-1890) of Ringebu Anne Arnesdatter BERG (1827-1907) of Ringebu Hans Johannessen BERGUM (1832-1918) of Øyer Kari Johnsdatter STRØMSJORDET (1828-1915) of Øyer Anders Olsen DEHLIN (1809-ca. 1876) of Jevnaker. Anne, Hans, Kari, and Anders all emigrated to the United States. Naturally, as I move back in time I need to consider other "farm address names" as well. In terms of help I can offer others, I have the published kirkebøker of Øyer and Ringebu, and also own Einar Hovdhaugen's "Utvandrigen til Amerika frå Ringebu." I look forward to sharing information with other listers. Peter J. Arnesen 9617 Whispering Pines Court Saline, MI 48176
Hi Gwen, You will find 21 Molstad's in Traill County of North Dakota in 1885. Yes, I did find them. There are two large groups and some individuals in other ED's. I've sent away for the printed records so I can see the relationships between them, and see if the singles are related or just other people with that name. I hope I'm not wasting my money. Jean, I have indeed seen the passage you refer to, but I'd forgotten that John was reportedly on his way to Tennessee when he died. I would appreciate it if you could check the history for the following relatives who also died in Benson: Agnes Ellsworth, later Agnes Aslakson -- Agnes was born Agnes Arnesen; she was the eldest child of Anthon Arnesen and the cousin of my grandfather, Herbert. Grace Lyle (sometimes Lyle Grace) Ellsworth, later Munson -- Grace was Agnes's only child. Mabel Williams (Mrs. Lewis G. Williams) -- Mabel was Anthon's second daughter. Grace Severn -- Grace was Anthon's third daughter. I actually doubt you'll find her, because I don't think she lived in Benson after her marriage (sometime before 1920). Thanks for your note, and I look forward to hearing from you again. Peter J. Arnesen

I'm looking for information on my grandmother's family. Her name was Anna Molstad Newborg, and until just two weeks ago, we all thought she was from Honefoss, so I've been on the Buskerud list. I was just able to go thru a suitcase my cousin had in her basement and found a treasure trove of information about her. She was really born in Gran, Hadeland, Norway. Among the items I found were her vaccination record from 1866 with her parents names, which we also had wrong. Their names were John Johannesen and Ingeborg Olsdatter. My grandmother was born in 1861 and she had two brothers, Ole and Christian, and three sisters, Julie, Karen and Johanna. Thanks to Margit I was able to find their baptism records on line so I could get dates and godparents. Hello List, I've just joined at the invitation of Margit. I did a quick browse of the archives, and noticed several messages from a certain Chris about Anthon Arnesen of Ringebu and of Benson, Swift County, Minnesota. Anthon was the older brother of my great grandfather, John Arnesen. I know quite a bit about him and his family (I spent two days at the Minnesota Historical Society last month, and pulled quite a bit of info), but not as much as I'd like. I do have his ancestry traced back to the 1600s, pictures of his family in Benson, the birth dates of all his children, and the death dates of most of them. I also know the names of the men married by his 3 daughters who survived into adulthood, and the names of four of his grandchildren. I'd be very interested in establishing contact with others who are interested in Anthon, or any other members of the family. A quick note in passing. I noticed that someone pointed out that in nineteenth century Norway Anthon would typically have been known as Anthon Arnesen, since his father was Peder Arnesen. That's generally true, but my great great grandfather, Peder Arnesen Bakke, appears to have adopted the "modern" practice of treating his Arnesen patronymic as a permanent surname. In the 1865 and 1875 censuses, his wife and children are all listed as "Arnesen," and to the best of my recollection I've only noticed one instance in the Ringebu kirkebøker where a member of the family was referred to as "Pedersen." That happens to be the record of Anthon's confirmation on 6 May 1866, when he was referred to as Anthon Pedersen Arnesen Grav. Clearly, this was a manifestation of some ambiguity of how to refer to the family, since Anthon bears "his own" patronymic of Pedersen, but also his father's patronymic of Arnesen -- which I think we now have to regard as a surname. Finally, he also bears the "farm address name" of Grav. At that time, Grav was the farm assigned to support the kirkesanger of Ringebu Church, a position that Peder Arnesen had held since 1863. The Grav farmhouse is now in the "urban" part of Ringebu, where it is used as for meetings of the Ringebu Lions Club. When Anthon emigrated from Norway in 1869, he was referred to as Anthon Arnesen Grav. The following year the klokker's residence was shifted to the farm of Halstead, where the house that my Arnesen ancestors lived in is still occupied by a retired Ringebu teacher (my great great grandfather taught in Ringebu from 1847 to 1890). Hoping to hear from somebody and to share information with them. Peter J. Arnesen
I do not know of a Valhalla in Saskatchewan, and none is listed on the National Archives of Canada website database of past and present post offices. There is however a Valhalla Centre in Alberta, and it seems that in the past there was also a post office with the name of Valhalla in the vicinity of Valhalla Centre. Thanks for the info. It didn't seem terribly likely. I'm wondering if it's a retirement home for old Norwegians! I'm going to try the older Canadian census's and also see if I can find out where she got married so I can find out her husband's name.
