All records point to Valdres for birth of my ggrandfather on April 11, 1852, (according to confirmation) 1851 according to obituary and death certificate) I wrote to Norway and got the following answer: "We have searched the parish registers of Svenes, Aurdal and Ulnes - but could not find the baptismal of Carl Johan. However; In the parish register of Nord-Aurdal, Svenes, 5, 1842-1863, page 263, we have found that a woman named Ingebor Gulbrdr. (Næsen), age 32, on February 10, 1852, emigrated to Amerika. We have not found a person with the name Knud Rye in the same list,. There is then a possibility, that Ingeborg (if this is the "right" Ingeborg) gave birth to Carl Johan in Amerika - and that he was baptized there." -------------------- A cousin in Utah went to Salt Lake City and found the following: (I highly suspect this is the line I will check out, Johanne the wife/mother is in 1801 census in Vardal on Braasted , Gulbrand the husband/father is not in Vardal in 1801, I suspect he was born in Nord Aurdal and later moved to Vardal.) "Margit, I think I have solved the mystery of Ingeborg, nothing on Carl Johan however. I checked the parish records today for Svenes and Ulnes and all of Nord Aurdal, here's what I found and I'll send pictures. First of all she was not born in Svenes or Ulnes and neither was her brother Gulbrand, when I couldn't find a birth record I thought about checking confirmation records, they were not confirmed in Svenes either, so I thought that vaccination records are kept for the whole county so I checked those and found a Ingeborg Gulbrandsdatter vaccination in Vardal in June of 1822 or 1824, her parents are Gulbrand Gulbrandsen and Johanna Pedersdatter, then I figured out that we knew that Gulbrand got married in Svenes so I checked Svenes moving in records and there was Gulbrand in 1844 moving in from Vardal, it said he was born in April of 1829, so I checked the IGI and Gulbrand and Johanna in Vardal, Oppland have 4 children, 2 Ingeborgs 1 Gulbrand and 1 Peter, it has to be them, I can really feel it. I didn't find Gulbrand's family moving into Svenes, but I don't know how far Vardal is from there. Vardal and Svenes are both listed as parishes in Nord-Aurdal. Let me know what you think. I'm really sure this is her family. Oh and I didn't have time to check marriage records for Knud in Vardal, but there's always a next time. On the vaccination record she is third from the bottom." ----------------------- So therefore I am thinking that my ggrandfather Carl Johan's father was a Knud Rye from Valdres/Svenes and that his parents were never married. That my GG Grandmother left Norway either with the child or pregnant with the child. More records will have to be checked, but that is where I am at this time on "GG Grandma who got run over by a train and her death certificate says "Her brain went queer for her" as a reason for her death. Looking for the Hagejordet farm in 1865-telling, we find whom I believe to be Marit IVERSDATTER's family (http://snipurl.com/v2fb); at least her father and maybe his second wife... nothing else makes sense. Kathryn, In the 1875-telling (http://snipurl.com/v27y), we find Anders Olsen Skinnehaugen, born 1840 in Søndre Fron, and his wife Berte Knudsdatter Skinnehaugen, born 1842 in Søndre Fron. They are living on Skinnehaugen farm #116. You may want to look at this Skinnehaugen øvre farm #119 also (http://snipurl.com/v28e). There is Ole Andersen Skinnehaugen (born 1822 in Ringebo), his wife Mari Pedersdatter (1838 in Søndre Fron), six children (Anne, Mathias, Pauline, Marit, Johanne, Amund), AND the father's mother -- MARIT IVERSDATTER, born 1809 in Nordre Fron. SO, if Ole Andersen is the son of Marit (who matches your ID below), why are her other children's patronymic PEDERSEN? Is it possible you have two or more families identified below? Do you have any additional information on these people you are looking for? (The more you provide, the better we can help...) In (emigrants) Utflytta fra Sør-Fron 1849-1897 (http://snipurl.com/v28r), we find leaving the Skinnehaugen residence: Anders Pedersen (32), Marit Poulsdatter (35), and Mathia Andersdatter (3.5) all going to Hedemarken on 24 April 1878. This appears to be husband / wife / daughter. In the 1865 and 1875-tellings, we find the Brætingen and Bjerke farms in Søndre Fron, but no one seems to match the people you are looking for. Will keep on digging... Have a nice day! I have received the Aal Lutheran Church Cemetery List from which I will be happy to do lookups. The list was given to me by Gary Kaldor, who is an administrator for the church. This church is located in Norway township (146 north, range 51 west), 3 miles north / 5 miles west of Hillsboro. This list is two-fold, alphabetical order and grave lot order. There are 340 known graves, the oldest is that of Clara Josephine Skreen (a baby) who died in 1881. Dates given for births and deaths are YEAR ONLY. Originally the cemetery was about half the size that it is today and was surrounded by a fence. Some of the unmarked graves are that of early pioneers who buried people outside the cemetery, next to the fence. That is why there are several unmarked graves in one area around the fence. Some of the old family lots were elevated with a border around them. In the 1940s the church decided to redo the cemetery for easier maintenance. So all the headstones were removed and the whole cemetery was smoothed over. A small underground marker was placed at the corner of every lot. In the 1970s the lots on the east side were plotted out and individual graves were made available. Have a nice day! Clark in Japan
