Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hcC.2ACE/1340.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Yes, the date of enumeration for each of those census is important to be able to calculate a birth year. You also have to consider that it is quite common for age to be given wrongly by the member of the family trying to answer the enumerator's questions. The five men I mentioned were possible matches for the father - not the son. None of those was expected to be a match for the 'baby' Nils. Without the date correction for the christening, it was sitll possible that the child wasn't born until shortly after the 1865 census - therefore I wanted to consider all the possible father candidates and look at the farms where they were residing. A child born in 1865 would be recorded as age 1 in the Norwegian census of 31 Dec 1865. Given the matches to both the father and mother that the original poster presented - consider again the family living on Vigen. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=f60544&gardpostnr=129&sokefelt=skjul

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hcC.2ACE/1340.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Earlier postings by 'HRHpar' provide some interesting conflicts of info. For example: 1900 census he is 34, so birth year would have been 1866. 1910 census he is 42, so birth year would have been 1868. 1920 census he is 53, so birth year would have been 1867. What was the date of enumeration for these census reports? None of these match your 1865 birth info. 'HRHpar' also refers to five people with that name, but married/or/of age. These would not match your 'baby' Nils born in 1965. You mention that your birth/christening dates were found in FamilySearch. Do you have ANY document in the USA (naturalization / marriage certificate / death certificate / etc.) giving his age/birth date? I have a 'gut feeling' we may be looking at the wrong person in 1865. The online LDS library catalog indicates that they have the years 1814-1927 available for Østre Slidre and that earlier records are recorded under the Vestre Slidre clerical district. The 1865 census indicates at least 5 men by name like 'Gulbrand Nils.' (married or of marriageable age) so compare records carefully. That census also indicates a couple of local farms by the name of 'Røine' - perhaps coincidence that another male by the name of Nils Gulbrands. lives on one of them with his widowed mother Sigri Ols. The father of Nils Gulbrandsen was Gulbrand Nilsen and his mother was Sigri Nilsdr. I believe that this Nils Gulbrandsen came to the USA about 1891 and settled in Tacoma, Washington in 1900. His name in America was Nils Gulbrandsen Röine (altered to Royne) so perhaps he was connected to the place called Røn in Oppland. In 1906 Nils married Ingeborg Thomasdatter Kvale who was also born in Norway (in 1870) and came to the US about 1888. Nils and Ingeborg Royne were my wife's great grandfparents and she is interested in learning more about her Norwegian family and heritage. Thank you for any help you can provide. Gary N. 2. Hello, Have you contacted city hall at Lanesboro to see who is the local historian ? It is a very small town. I see by typing in Lanesboro MN in "google" that there are many web sites on the town. It is known for being a favorite of Minnesotans who like to bike ride on the Root River Trails. Beautiful scenery in that area of Mn. There is a Lanesboro museum .Many parents ride the trials with their children. The Root River Valley is a wonderful area of Minnesota with the Root River running through the town of Lanesboro. The SE portion of Minnesota is unbelieveably beautiuful. Barb of Minnesota

You can also download the 1886 Land Register for Oppland (and for all fylker) in the form of zipped Excel files from the Norwegian Historical Data Centre (NHDC) at http://www.rhd.uit.no/matrikkel/excel.html .
