Hi, Listers I am curious who was the originator of the initial inquiry that was gatewayed anonymously to this Norway-Oppland mailing list? Johannes Anstensen Skundberg and Karen Ellertsdatter were my great-grandparents. My father, Leo Anderson, mentioned in the most recent post, died in Seattle in 1992. His advertisement searching for relatives in Snertingdal appeared in 1976. I have continued his family history research since his death and, with the help of others, have accumulated much information. Peter Anderson

(Fr: 160 Spd, Medbr. 100spd. [I believe first amount is cost of tickets; and second, the amount of money that they had with them. Spd is an abbreviation for speciedaler, the Norwegian currency at the time) Johannes Anstensen Skundberg was the son of Ansten Olsen and Anne Marie Larsdtr., søndre Aalseth. Wife Karen Agnette was daughter of Eilert Pedersen and Marthe Anstensdtr. Granum. Johanes was for a time farm user in Granum before he purchased Skundberg. A sister of Johannes, Andrine, married Andreas Olsen Aalsetheie, emigrated in 1870 to Milwaukee. His uncle, Johannes Olsen Aalseth emigrated from Kopperud in Vardil 1871 to St. Paul---His wife's brother Peder Eilertsen Granum, emigrated as early as 1850, and together with some others from Biri founded Rush River Settlement in Pierce County in Wisconsin. Another brother, Mathias Elertsen Granum, emigrated in the period 1855-67. Johannes A. Skundberg also settled down in Wisconsin and took the name "Anderson." A son of Johannes' son Peter, is Leo Anderson, who is now 70 years old, and lives as a retiree in Seattle, Washington. He advertises for relatives in Snertingdal. That is the entry for this family. Hope it helps.

Hi Bill, North Dakota has their deaths online. https://secure.apps.state.nd.us/doh/certificates/deathCertSearch.htm You have to use a last name and search 10 years at a time. While I have seen 'copies' of certain sections, I have not seen an original document. But my cousin swears by them. http://showcase.netins.net/web/travelgenie/ Click on "Norway" and scroll down to "Best Scale: Statens Kartverk M711 Series Maps (sections 1016-I to 2230-IV" and click on the link provided. Scroll down to the map and click on the fylke desired (i.e., Sogn og Fjordane). A grid map will appear; click on a desired grid (i.e., 1216) and a sub-grid map appears. From this sub-grid, select the section you would like and send in your order < Go to the Printable Order Form >. If you have questions, you should email them direct. I did and they were very responsive to my query. Be patient for an answer, because they appear to be a small "Mom & Pop" shop and do some traveling on business. Have a nice day! Clark in Japan
