This morning I received this thoughtful e-mail from Shelley Cardiel who is attempting to reunite some photographs with the right family. My Aaberg family is from Valdres and I believe that there is a possibility that her family is from a nearby location. Does anyone have thoughts on the topic? Please see the email below. For your information: only son of the mentioned Syver Hestkind died as a newborn baby in 1938, and there is no more the family on the farm. It indicates that she was born legitimate, so they parents were married at sometime before this. They were young parents. I think this is Kari Olsdatter Hestekind's family on the census of 1865. It includes names of family members who were listed as sponsors on the daughter Tora/Thora's baptism, including her mother, Karen Knudsdatter Hestekind, and her sister Mathea (Mattea) and brother Kristian. http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0540&kenr=011&bnr=0066&lnr=000 Data on domicile: Census year: 1865 Municipality: Sør-Aurdal Municipality number: 0540 Name of domicile: Øvre Hestekind, BreiensstøllenNumber of persons in this domicile: 10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name Family status Marital status Occupation Birth year Place of birth Ethnicity Ole Syversen Husfader g Gaardbr og Selveier 1808 Søndre Aurdal Karen Mattea Knudsdatter hans Kone g 1817 Søndre Aurdal Syver Olsen deres Søn ug hjælper Faderen med Gaardsbruget 1843 Søndre Aurdal Ole Olsen deres Søn ug hjælper Forældrene 1844 Søndre AurdalSiri Olsdatter deres Datter ug 1846 Søndre Aurdal Kari Olsdatter deres Datter ug 1851 Søndre Aurdal Maria Olsdatter deres Datter ug 1854 Søndre Aurdal Mattea Olsdatter deres Datter ug 1859 Søndre Aurdal Kristian Olsen deres Søn ug 1857 Søndre Aurdal Here is Aslak and Kari Haug's second daughter's birth and baptism record, scanned http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060727080316.jpg&siz=full born Feb. 3, 1877, baptised March 25, 1877, Karen Mattea, legitimate, father is farmer Aslak Simonsen Haug age 22, (I believe he owns the Haug farm) and mother Kari Olsdatter age 25. Harder to read all of her sponsors names, But one is Kristian Olsen Hestekind, Dortea Simonsdatter Haug, Maria Olsdatter Hestekind (a different sister, but shown on the 1865 census?) and Mathea Olsdatter Hestekind. Those digitised parish registers should also be available through the local LDS research center. Fylke: Oppland Prestegjeld/sokn:Sør-Aurdal Bruflat If you contact Janni [email protected] you might be able to get some lookups help for Etnedal, if you know the farm name (you do, Hestekind øvre, and Haug.) The local church is maybe Bruflat. You could also try Betty [email protected] She has some bygdeboks for that area. Bygdeboker are farm and family history books, and since it is indicated that Aslak Simonsen Haug is the farm owner at Haug (Houg) in Sør Aurdal, he should be listed in the book. I think that in the 1886 farm tax and owner's name census, Kari Olsdatter Hestekind's brother Kristian Olsen Hestekind, was still owning the farm at Hestekind, although there is a little spelling variation, I think it's the same farm. It's spelled Hestkinn øvre, Hestkinn upper, just like on the 1865 census. It is the subfarm # 3 listed below. http://www.rhd.uit.no/matrikkel/mtliste.aspx?knr=0540&gnr=135 Fylke: Oppland Kommune: Sør-Aurdal Sogn: Bruflat Gårdsnummer: 135 Gammelt matrikkelnr: 123 Navn på gård: Hestkinn søndrAntall bruk registrert på matrikkelgården: 5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruksnr Gammelt løpenr Bruksnavn Brukers navn Skyld i Mark-Øre Skyld i Daler-Ort-Skilling Merknad 1 702 Bjørn-Ødegaarden Erik A. There were several from Søyne who came to America: -Kjersti Knutsdatter born 1816 with her second husband Knut Øysteinsen Søre-Bø and children from both marriages Knut Kristoffersen born 1836, Rangdi Kristoffersdatter born 1839, Øystein Knutsen born 1845, Kristofer Knutsen born 184-Ingebjørg Knutsdatter born 1821 with two children (Simen Jonsen and Randi Olsdatter) -Simen Knutsen born 1836 -Guri Knutsdatter born 1840 These above were all from one family and all came over in 1850. A Knut Madsson was a hussman on Søyne circa 1850, married Ingebjørg Jonsdotter Bøeiga and they lived at Steinsrud under Gåsdeilden and then to America in 186 Another husmannsplass on Søyne was called Øvre Søyne and here lived Kristoffer Larsson Hænseiga (born 1800), married Anne Sjugurdsdatter Lajord (born 1805) and went to America in 1853 with children: Lars 1830, Anne 1833, Marit 1836, Sjugurd 1842 and Ola 1845 This Anne was the daughter of Sjugurd Maddsen (1777-1817) and Anne Madsdatter Myre (1779-1813). They lived on a place on Lajord called Berget. Anne had only one other sibling that lived to adulthood, namely Margrete Madsdatter who married 1) Andris Tordsen Dal (1792-1822) and 2) Håvard Larsen Hæn (1796-1864). Her one son from first marriage and two of her children from second marriage went to America: Andris Andrisen 1822, Anne Håvardsdatter 1826, and Marit Håvardsdatter 1830. This Andris Andrisen is most likely the Anders Andersen Lajordes in your posting Sjugird was the son of Mads Jonsen Lajord (born at Kvåle in 1745, died 1797) and Margrete Sjugurdsdatter (possibly from Hæn. Another person that you ask about in your posting was Nils Tronsen Lajordes. Ona husmannsplass on Lajord called Sylvsmedplassen there lived a Trond Nilsen Søre-bø 1793-1839 and his wife Sigrid Madsdatter Haugen, Kvåla. They had a son Nils born 1825 Strand, Lajord, Hagen, Kattevol, Heen, Kvale, and Bo are all farms in Vang i Valdres. Garth

If you visit http://gfearonhistory.blogspot.com, you'll see my most recent questions and info. I also have placed some family information into Ancestry.com which I can link you to if I have your email. I'm traveling to Norway in July of this year (2007), and am trying to establish contacts there to visit the area. Shirley Manning is helping me with her Soine/Lajord/Kvale/Ellingbo info, and has suggested I get in touch with John Bore Johnsen in Ulnes, Norway. Bob Skogman has also indicated that Erland Nefstad has been helpful in showing Soine relatives to the original farm site near his house in Vang. >From a Norway research site on the internet, I was able to get the gardnummer farm numbers for some of our relatives in the Vang area: Soine (50), Lien (56 & 79), Ellingbo (34/2), Lajord (51/3), Tune (36/2), Myre (47/1), Haen (71), and Eltun(13). Now if I can just get the detailed maps to locate them, and locals who may be knowledgeable about them. Hope you're still monitoring this board. Gregory Fearon
