From a large Irish Catholic family? I have a great-grand aunt named Agnes, sister to my great grandmother Teresa (Nolan) Rice. The dates you've given indicate you could be her child, if she remained unmarried and therefore gave you her maiden name. Do you know anything more about her that would help us determine if she was your mother?

His father was Patrick Nolan, his mother was Maria (or possibly Mary) Casey. He came to New York (as did all his siblings except Michael) around 1903-1905. Have been unable to discover anything further about him or his descendants, although I have a great deal of reliable, documented info. about some of his siblings and their descendants. Perhaps he is one of the two James mentioned in this thread? Could you tell me what else is known about your James? I would be delighted if we have a match.

    1. [NOLAN] Rebecca Jane NOLAN (1868-1889) - Ontario
    2. Wayne Cunneyworth
    3. Rebecca Jane NOLAN, age 18, born in Stitsville, Ontario, and John Thomas “Cunningworth" (Cunneyworth), age 23, born in Toronto, were married at St. James church in Carleton Place c. Jan 26, 1887. Rebecca’s parents: James S. Nolan / Jane Cunningham Rebecca died in childbirth May 31, 1889, in Carleton Place, aged 20 years, 7 months. She is buried at St. John’s Anglican church, in Lanark county, near Innisville (an hour’s drive west of Ottawa). Rebecca’s grave is next to that of her father, James S. Nolan (1842-1916), and his wife, Jane Cunningham, (1840-1919) and their children. A point worth noting is that the Nolan family marker is a new, modern gravestone. Somebody has made a significant effort to maintain a memorial for this family. Whoever this is, they might have additional information about John T. and Rebecca. In addition to Rebecca, the family of Nolan residents at this cemetery includes: Elizabeth A. (1863-1881), George H. (1878-1878), James E. (1873-1873), James S. (1842-1916), Jane Cunningham (1840-1919), Mary Ida (1875-1881) and William J. (18??-18??), all in the same grave site, and Peter and Sarah at another grave. Cora Nolan of Smiths Falls informed me that Peter and Sarah are the gggrandparents of her husband Claude Nolan, but so far the family has been unable to make a connection with “my” Nolans buried there. Another Nolan, Eliza Ellen, is in Pinegrove cemetery, also in Lanark township. Shortly after Rebecca’s death, John Thomas was in Owen Sound c. July 27, 1889, where their son James died at the age of 2 months. It is possible that John was staying with his parents, William and Margaret, during this period of mourning over the recent death of his wife. Ancestry.com has a reference to a “Cuneyworth” in the Duluth, Minnesota Directories, 1890-92. John Thomas died Mar 26, 1926 in “Ray”(?) Township, Koochiching County, Minnesota, cause of death “ulcer of stomach”. He was buried in International Falls March 31, 1926. John’s Minnesota death certificate lists his occupation as camp cook. The complete lack of known details in this document suggests that he was not in the company of friends when he died. The story of Rebecca and John has intrigued me for many years. I like to think that I am rescuing a forgotten and tragic story from obscurity. If any NOLAN researchers have information about Rebecca's family, I would be very grateful to hear from them. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: NOLAN, CANTWELL Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wd3.2ACIB/748.1.3 Message Board Post: I have a Thomas J. NOLAN who married a Margaret CANTWELL, eldest daughter of Richard CANTWELL, Esqr., February 8 1869 in Castlecomer, County Kilkenny. Thomas and Margaret lived in Ballyhook House, Stratford-on-Slaney, County Wicklow, Ireland. They had 3 children. A son, Edmond, was born January 25 1870. Edmond emigrated to the US to Chicago and I lost track of him. He married in the US and had 2 children, Eugene and Mary. Thomas and Margaret's daughter, Linda M. died in 1887 in Ballinrush, RC Parish of Myshall, County Carlow, Ireland. She is buried there. She was 13. Eugene P. emigrated to the US and lived in Chicago and I have lost track of him also. I am still working on him however. Eugene married Gladys Marian Samms/Symms? in 1919, possibly in Chicago, as they are in the 1920 Chicago census. Margaret died March 8 1879 and is buried in Baltinglass. I think this is in County Wicklow. After Margaret died, Thomas and his sons emigrated to the US and settled in Chicago. I am! still working on this. Some or all of them may have emigrated together. Thomas died in 1916 in Chicago. As I said, I have lost track of his 2 sons. It's possible they are related to your Cantwells through their mother.

    3. I have done a lot of work on the NOLAN family that immigrated during the famine years (1849) out of Galway. These NOLANs immigrated first to Philadelphia, and then moved to NYC in 1851, and then moved in 1868 to Hudson County, Jersey City, New Jersey. Their two oldest sons, Thomas (born in Philadelphia) and John (born NYC) became quite prominent in Hudson County, West Hoboken, NJ. What struck me was a lot of "familiar territory". I have copied a lot of records from St. Michael's Church in West Hoboken for the late 1890s and early 1900s, and there are a lot of "TOOMEY" surnames that were involved with the babtisms, first communions, and marrying other NOLANs (not part of our family) in the records. Is there any connection between your TOOMEY's and Hudson County, NJ?
