Many thanks to Kathe Determan for completing the Memory Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery survey and updating it with more information such as military service. This is a huge undertaking and many genealogy researchers will be grateful for this excellent database. It's online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nmchaves/MemLawn2006.html. Hi everyone, What a terrific idea for a project that many of you might like to do! ----- Original Message ----- From: J M Alyea To: Karen Mitchell Sent: Friday, March 10, 2006 7:34 PM Subject: Latest project Hi, Karen, Latest project: my 95-year-old aunt in Cortez came across a packet of letters that my dad wrote in 1928-29 and sent them to me. My dad and his cousin (ages 22 and 19) drove to California and on up the coast to Oregon, basically looking for work. As I read the letters, I was amazed -- I didn't know my dad could write so vividly! I decided that the contents needed to be shared with my daughter and our grandchildren. So I just finished six little books, the first of which went right out to Cortez. I made an introduction which explains who the letter writer was and what they were doing. I also did some research on the car they drove (a 4-cylinder "Star" at least a 1926 model, as that was the first year the 4-cylinder was made.) I even found a photo of a restored one on line. I typed out each letter, putting in my comments at the end, and a photo where appropriate (like the picture of San Diego Bay, near where our daughter stayed last October for a Marine Corps graduation). Dad also drew sketches of things now and then, and I scanned these and put them in, as well as a souvenir menu from a cruise ship which he sent in one letter. I did the project on Microsoft Word, but any good word processing program will work, if it allows pictures to be inserted. I use Photo Shop Elements to handle photos. If I get a picture off the internet (as I did with the old Star car), I save it on the desktop, then open it in Photo Shop. I scanned the drawings from Photo Shop, too, so I could sharpen and increase the contrast. This was a fun project! Now I wish someone would find some more old letters for me to play with! I had a real ball doing this, and the letters can now be shared without danger of getting lost or falling apart. Thought I would tell you about this and how much fun it was! Joan
From: Linda Haas Davenport [mailto:lhaasdav@cox.net] Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2006 8:07 AM To: USGENWEB-ALL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ABChat] Problem with non-resolution of Grievances The Project's by-laws assign certain duties to the AB. Article VI (Duties of the Advisory Board), Section 3, lists one of the AB's duties as: "advising and mediating, if necessary, any grievances or appeals." http://www.usgenweb.com/volunteers/bylaws.shtml Over the years, acting under this section of the by-laws the AB has heard grievances and rendered recommendations to the parties of a grievance. However, once the AB rendered its recommendations it has been up to the parties of the grievance whether or not to follow the AB's recommendations. The by-laws do not give the AB the authority to enforce its recommendations. This situation has resulted in frustration on both sides - the AB and the members. This AB was recently involved in a grievance filed by a CC against an SC over the delinking of the CC. The AB members hearing this grievance rendered a set of recommendation, one of which was for the SC to relink the CC. The SC declined to implement the recommendations, citing past precedent that an SC has the right to delink any CC they wish and there is no requirement for grievance recommendations to be implemented. The decision of the SC resulted in yet more grievances being filed and e-mails from members demanding that the AB "do something." The AB has discussed this situation in Exec (the place to discuss grievances) and after extensive discussion has decided to bring this issue of non-resolution of grievances to open discussion to try to find a workable solution to the problem. A gentle reminder to everyone: As you discuss this issue please be careful not to include any particulars of the grievances or the parties involved. Linda HD
To the State Coordinators of the Southwest South Central Region (states of: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah) Please forward this message to your state list. ******* David Morgan, one of your County Coordinator Regional Representatives on the Advisory Board, has resigned his seat. The by-laws call for the AB to appoint someone to fill a vacant seat until the next scheduled annual election (Aug 31, 2006). The AB is therefore issuing a call for volunteers who are interested in serving on the AB. Volunteers will be accepted from March 9th through March 17th. To be eligible to fill this seat the volunteer must be a member of one of the states within the SWSC Region (see list above) and have served as Local (county) coordinator for a period of 12 continuous months prior to the election. In this case there will not be an election, rather the AB has asked the EC to hold a Preference Poll, but 12 months of continuous service is still a qualification. If you are interested in volunteering for the seat please send me a private e-mail (lhaasdav@cox.net) stating you are volunteering for the SWSC seat and please include: Your name, primary e-mail address and the position(s) you hold within the region. Your name and the position(s) you hold will be posted to Board-L. If you would like to nominate someone for this position please send me a private e-mail (lhaasdav@cox.net) listing the person's name, primary e-mail address and the position(s) they hold. Unless you request otherwise the information will be kept confidential. If you have any questions please feel to ask. Thank you. Linda Haas Davenport NC USGenWeb Project
Hi everyone, I have lost ALL of my emails, so I am hoping that each of you will take a minute to help me out. Please check your "Sent folders" to see if you have sent anything to me. If you have something please resend it. Usually when an email comes in, it goes into the appropriate folder until I can work the message. I had TONS of data stored in 13 different folders that needed attention. Now it's all gone. I am pretty good about backing up my files...except my email...lesson learned. I am so sorry if this has inconvenienced you in any way but I desperately need your help to rebuild the files. Thank you so very much! Karen

The AB is therefore issuing a call for anyone interested in volunteering for the Representative-At-Large seat. Volunteers will be accepted from March 5th through March 14th. Since the RAL seat represents all Project members the volunteers' names will be submitted to the membership via a Preference Poll to be held by the EC (approximately March 19th-29th). Good morning Susan and all, This is a great tutorial, thank you for sharing this with us. Making a "timeline" can be so helpful to show the researcher what data needs to be added and also show the times of the family relocating. I'm sure all of you can come up with various ways to use a timeline in your own research. From another list: In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - & thus influencing as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to their dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. Some of the major epidemics in the United States are listed below: 1657 Boston Measles; 1687 Boston Measles 1690 New York Yellow Fever 1713 Boston Measles 1729 Boston Measles 1732-3 Worldwide Influenza 1738 SC Smallpox 1739-40 Boston Measles 1747 CT,NY,PA,SC Measles 1759 N. It is not possible for any file attachments of any kind to get onto a Rootsweb list. All attachments are blocked before they even get to the point of delivery to participants. Charles, I am the New Mexico State Coordinator. Once again you have presumed that you have the right to tell someone what to do. You do NOT have the right to tell any AB member, or anyone else, to remove themselves from the NM list. Quite the matter of fact, I welcome them and wish more would subscribe to the various lists throughout the project. You will cease and desist this action immediately. Furthermore, who is on the NM list is NEW MEXICO BUSINESS, and not for the SW list.
