    1. Keener, County Clerk
    2. Susan Bellomo
    3. Hi, Wild Bunch. I received a photo of a New Mexico Court House from someone who wanted to know which county it is in. She said the Courthouse Clerk's name was Keener. I'm trying to get a date for Keener's tenure. The court house is red brick with a dome (not green like ours in Chaves County) and tall, cement pillars on the front and side of the building that I can see. Would anyone like to take a look to see whether you can identify it? Please e-mail me privately and I'll send you the reduced-size photo I made. (The file was sent to me as a large 500+kb file, so I reduced the file size to about 61kb. ) susanbellomo@yahoo.com Thanks! Susan

    1. Fw: [USGenWeb-SW] Congress on fast track to restriction on records
    2. Susan Bellomo
    3. FYI. Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: "W David Samuelsen" <dsam@sampubco.com> To: <USGENWEB-SW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 07, 2004 2:24 AM Subject: [USGenWeb-SW] Congress on fast track to restriction on records (permission is granted to circulate to other lists to encourage responses by subscribers to write letters to their Congress representatives.- David Samuelsen) How many of you are aware of Congress is on very fast track to severely restrict access to birth records??? Here's what it says for benefit of those who doesn't subscribe to the ADN . Chapter 2 in the bill, "Improved Security for Birth Certificates" is where the problem is as stated by the FGS and NGS (remember we discussed booth at the FGS conference in Sept 2005?)(NGS will be in Nashville May 2005. I learned of this from another list.... http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=dailynews Oct 7, 2004 issue - THAT IS TODAY! Those who subscribe to Ancestry_Daily_News probably will see the item article. Plese note that the bill's sponsor is Dennis Hastert who is the SPEAKER of the House of Representatives. He has the power to ram the bill to his heart's desire. - David Samuelsen) HR 10's formal title of bill is "9/11 Recommendations Implementation Act" (included in this act is creation of cabinet level intelligence director we see and hear so much about in the news) ---Begin Article--- Immediate Action Requested Legislation in Congress Seeks to Restrict Access to Birth Records; FGS Recommends Writing to Your Congressional Representatives The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill, House Resolution 10 (H.R. 10), which seeks to restrict access to birth certificates. This bill, which purpose is to respond to the threat of terrorism, is on a fast track to passage and has been voted on by several committees already. Your help is needed now. David Rencher, Chairman of the Record Access and Preservation Committee, a joint committee of the National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies, has sent a letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman Dennis Hastert, recommending an amendment to the bill as follows: "However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates, or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record." A copy of the letter is available on the FGS site at www.fgs.org/rpa/formalactions.htm. To view this bill, go to http://thomas.loc.gov. Enter HR 10 in the search box for "Bill Number." Action Is Needed Now Because this bill is moving toward passage so quickly, it is urged that the genealogical community take action immediately and let their representatives know that they are in support of David Rencher's amendment and the FGS position in this important matter. To find your state representative's contact information, go to http://www.house.gov/writerep/ . How Should I Word My Letter? While you should word the letter in any way that is comfortable for you, it is recommended that you include the following as a portion of the letter: "While I support the intention to increase security to protect the U.S. from terrorists and those who wish to improperly take U.S. identities, I am concerned that those researching their family's history continue to have access to non-certified birth records. Therefore, in order to support HR-10 I ask that you amend HR-10 Section 3063(d)(2) by adding the following wording to the existing paragraph: 'However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record.' I believe that this additional language is imperative so that the states do not react by restricting all certificates to comply with the law, rather than dealing with certified as opposed to non-certified birth certificates. This proposed amendatory language would remind them that they can and should be treated differently." ==== USGENWEB-SW Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe, send a message to USGENWEB-SW-L-request@rootsweb.com with the one word, unsubscribe. I think everyone that wanted to voice an opinion has done so, so I have tallied the results. 57 people said that the graphic was okay and they accepted it. 42 people said that it was not okay and they don't like it. So I believe the majority says that the graphic is okay. I may not agree with it but the majority wins (smile). Furthermore when I wrote to the Citizens Flag Alliance they stated: "Computer generated digitized images that may happen to be red, white and blue, may have stars and stripes and may resemble the flag are not flags, they are images. Any picture of a flag is not a flag it is a picture." So that clears up what is a flag and what is not. Thank you all for tendering your opinions, I do appreciate it. Much to be said in agreement with the following comments. almost factual! from another list.. thanks Richard. glorybee I think some of our ancestors definitely applied these rules ~~ ANCESTORS GUIDE TO NAMING 1) Thou shalt name your male children: James, John, Joseph, Abel, Richard, Thomas or William. 2) Thou shalt name your female children: Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Maria, Sarah, Ida, Virginia or Mae. 3) Thou shalt leave NO trace of your female children. 4) Even after naming your children using the above lists, thou shalt never refer to them by those names again; instead, thou shalt call them by strange nicknames, such as: Ike, Eli, Polly, Dolly, and Sukey. 5) Thou shalt not use any middle names on ANY legal documents or census reports and whenever possible, use only initials on legal documents. 6) Thou shalt learn to sign all documents illegibly so that your surname can be spelled, or misspelled in various ways: Tipper, Topper, Hopper, Tucker, Tapper. 7) Thou shalt, after no more than 3 generation, make sure that all family records are lost, misplaced, burned in a court house fire, lost at sea or buried so that NO future trace of them can be found. 8) Thou shalt propagate misleading legends, rumors and vague innuendo regarding your place of origin: a) You MAY have come from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales ... or Iran. b) You MAY have American Indian Ancestry. c) You MAY be descended from one of three brothers that came over. 9) Thou shalt leave no cemetery records, or headstones with legible names; nor will any of the dates thereon match those in any public records. 10) Thou shalt leave no family bible with records of birth, marriage or death. 11) Thou shalt ALWAYS flip thy name around. If born James Albert, thou must make the rest of thy records in the name of Albert, AJ, JA, AL, Bert, Bart or Fred. 12) Thou must also flip thy parent's names around when making reference to them, although "Unknown" is an acceptable alternative. 13) Thou shalt name all generations of children with the identical first names, as will all of your brothers so that all cousins are named the same.

A statement telling the AB why you wish to be considered for this position, and why you feel you would be the best candidate for it. I think that the county coordinators are the heart and soul of this project. We provide a service to people, we provide them information, help, and guidance as County Coordinators. We locate people to help our website visitors, lookup volunteers, and people with information. We supervise the websites, the message boards, and the mail lists, as well as generate, and/or coordinate the information that brings people back to our respective websites. . As County Coordinators, we stand at the grassroots level of the project. Without us, there wouldn't be much available to our visitors and users. Our voice needs to be heard, and respected, on the Advisory Board. Since the last elections, I've been listening. These are things that I have heard County Coordinators talking about in the last year or so: The problems of the past need to be resolved. The infighting and bickering between differing areas of the project need to be settled. The by-laws need to give some security to volunteers and county coordinators. There needs to be improved lines of communication between the Advisory Board and State Coordinators and County Coordinators, and the rights and responsiblities of each need to be clearly defined. Recent events at the AB level have caused legitimate concern for USGenWeb members. These concerns need to be addressed by the Advisory Board. The process needs to be out in the open so that the members of the USGenWeb are aware of what's going on at the AB level. The current distrust does no benefit to the project as a whole. These issues I've heard about and these are the things that I would plan to work on should I be a representative on the Advisory Board. The USGenWeb Project is the greatest organization for the genealogical community, and the people that I've met here are the most incredible and giving folk. This project has the potential to provide so much to anyone who needs or wants to research their family history, and the backbone of that whole process lies with the county coordinator. As RAL I'll be the CC's voice on the Advisory Board, and I'll do my very best to have their concerns and issues heard. Thank you for your consideration. Scott Burow
